So far so good. Works as advertised. I bought on-line from Circuit City for $129 (after rebate). I chose CC because I wanted to get an extended warranty. Many on-line e-tailer don't offer extended warranties. I got a 2 year warranty for an extra $30. So, all told about $160 (excluding shipping and tax).
Plays my DVD-R and DVD-RW movie backups. Also plays my CD-RW MP3's (constant and variable bit rate). |

Pros:
Plays many more formats than the typical brand-name portable DVD players, including 4X DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, VCD, MP3 on CD, and JPEGs on CD-RW.
Long battery life, ~3.5 hours typically.
Feels solidly built.
One of the few portables with component video output and long battery life.
Easy to use on the road without the remote.
Cons:
Touted as "Progressive Scan", but video quality on an external monitor is very blurred and unwatchable in YPrPb (480P Progressive Scan) mode on my Sony KD-34XBR2 HDTV. The video quality is good in YCrCb (480i Interlaced) mode or S-Video. I exchanged the unit, but the replacment has the exact same problem in YPrPb mode, despite having the latest firmware Rev. 8007. Maybe it's the cheap component video cable they supply.
Customer Service does not respond to e-mail at all, and it can be very difficult to get through to them by phone. I finally _drove_ to the Cyberhome main office (at 48400 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA, not what it says on the Warranty Card) to exchange the unit. They were very helpful in person, even though I didn't have an RMA number.
The 240-line built-in screen looks fuzzy compared to full resolution 480-line models that cost much more.
Loud audio pops when powering the unit on/off.
Uncomfortable ear buds.
I recommend buying at Radio Shack for easy exchange / returns in case there is a problem.
In sum, thanks to the long battery life, it's a great unit for watching DVD+RWs or listening to MP3s on a road trip, but the video quality really isn't as good as its more expensive competitors. |

Cyberhome's products are gaining a reputation for being solid built dvd players that can play a multitude of formats. There is even a remote control "all region" hack that can be easily applied. The portable 712 continues that tradition. It plays all my VCDs, SVCDs, CD-Rs, and DVD-Rs (someone previously said it did not play dvd-rs...it DOES!!).
I have looked at both cheaper models (Initial/Mintek/Audiovox) and more expensive models (Toshiba/Samsung/Panasonic). The Cyberhome fits snugly in the middle. With the Initial/Mintek/Audiovox models, they tended to be thick and clunky, felt cheaply made, or had battery packs that were clipped onto the back (Initial and Mintek) - their screens which were small or just "ok". The more expensive models felt like they had better build quality and better warranties, but the quality of the image was not that much better than the Cyberhome...which costs $150-$300 less.
The only negatives I give this player are that the warranty is only 3 months, 1 year for parts. Plus the screen is only super sharp if placed directly in front of your vision, which means if several of your friends want to join in to watch, their viewing quality will not be that great. Also, you will find the price of an additional battery pack to be insanely high - $129 from their website. That is a total ripoff and Cyberhome should not do that to its customers.
Overall, I recommend the Cyberhome 712. For the money, you get a player that fits nicely in between the cheaper models and the more expensive models. The unit is compact, sleek and expensive looking and you get a nice 7" quality screen. The battery lasts from approximately 3 hours depending on the volume and your brightness settings, enough to complete most movies out on the market.

Picked one of these up at Radio Shack last evening. I'm pretty happy so far. It plays all standard things I've tried so far. I just happy it works with DVD+R/RW and CD-R/W. There are a few interface things I don't like (like a brightness control that only goes up - then wraps around back to black and goes up again), but for the price I'll live with it since it plays everything I have.
My high rating of 8 factors in the low price.
DVDs include those burned in Pinnacle Studio 8 and Nero (authored in Studio 8).
An SVCD a friend gave me didn't play with audio, but one I made with TMPGEnc and VCDEasy worked great.
A multisession CD with MP3s only played the files on one of the sessions, but reburned as a single session and everything was visible and played. I didn't test VBR.
I put in a CD with JPG files on it and they were displayed and there is a slideshow feature that shows a new slide every few seconds. It's configurable - see the online manual for details.
An addendum to the manual is worth noting here: They strongly warn against using the car adapter to charge the battery or to power the unit with the battery installed. The battery is actually an extra slice that connects to the bottom of the player, so disconnecting isn't really a problem, but charging while on a car trip might be a challenge.
