Pros:
- DVR and tuner at cheap price (lots of competition 2 years later though)
- 2 years of mediocre service
- Very good component picture quality
- Good recording quality in all modes between 1-4 hours
- 1 S-Video input 1 S-video output
- Composite In #2 on front with DV In
- Picks up multi-session discs (usually)
- Fills DVD+5, and finalizes without issues (usually)
- Finalized recordings are compatible (tested on both
Norcent DV-300 standalone and WinDVD on PC)
- 1600 MU (Mediatek) plays most Divx/Xvid modes/bitrates
EXCEPT Div3 and HD modes above 768x369 or so
- Plays and records DVD-R as well as DVD+R,plays DL(+only)
- Plays Mini-DVD as well as Mpeg ISO
- Plays Jpegs under 1280x1024 resolution quickly (thumbnail menu) but higher resolutions play slowly and thumbnail gallery will take a looong time to build
Cons:
-Manufacturer is Cyberhome (now defunct)
-Power issues - details - After 14 months of fair service, the machine did not recover after being powered off for a mere 6 days (vacation). Machine now needs about 7-10 minutes to "warm up" before it will read DVDs (DATA and DVR)and before it can understand the remote properly
Also, it will start rubbing discs (see previous users' comments) if left in pause or idle too long
-Recording is hit and miss, sessions will interrupt without explanation (possibly disc issue)
-DVD Media issues: Loves cheap discs (Opti, "Fuji" Ritek etc)but generally dislikes quality discs (Verbatim Taiyo Yuden) especially if they have data over 4GB
-Puny baby remote has most navigating and playback features (subtitle on/off) but buttons are way too small

I hope I did not miss this post but I looked around and didn't find it....
I have a cyberhome 1600 and I am trying to hook it up to my INFOCUS X2 projector through the component outputs. I am confident that the projector is set up properly but it appears that the DVD player is not sending out any signal. I have been using the dvd player hooked up to the projector with a composite video cable but I finally got around to buying a cable with component video hookups on one end and a M1-DA hookup on the other end.
I have selected setup the output signal to the component plugs but with no luck. I hooked up a small TV to the dvd player to navigate through the menus but it only broadcasts to the single composite output to the small TV.
Has anyone ran into this problem in the past and if so how did you fix it. I am hoping I haven't just missed something simple cause I have been all over this setup.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards,
Sam |

Wow, I'm worried my Cyberhome 1600MU is trying to kill me. I got it from Walmart in Ottawa in Jan 2006 for $95CDN. It has worked well until now, Jan 2007. I figure the warranty is long gone on it...
No problems with playback or recording all year - plays a variety of files, records on DVD-Rs too, not just DVD+Rs (but won't read DVD-RW) and has decent timer functions etc. Lately, its been jumpy on playback at about the 3-hour mark (halfway across the disk).
Last night, I was watching something I recorded and it was making alot of loud scraping noises, and would not respond to the remote, so I pressed eject on the remote. Get this: it ejected the disk, but the disk was still spinning so fast, it came flying out of the unit, across the coffee table, and landed a few inches from my leg! If I had not seen it myself, I would never believe it. Yikes.
The disk had circular scratch marks in the middle of the disk - basically wrecked a DVD+RW. Great. I took the cover off and the reinserted the wrecked disk, and I can see that it plays fine until it gets to the scratched part, then it tries to play it, and the locks up. I tried this a couple of times, and eventually it made the same noise - it seems that the lense mechanism rides up too high and scrapes against the disk. I checked another disk and saw similar scratches, but light ones.
Not sure if there is anything I can do to adjust the lense height. {I'm not sure a firmware update would solve this kind of think}
So sadly, its probably not usable - but I figured for $95 it was a risk. On the bright side, since then, there are many brand name dvd-recorders in that price range now. Interestingly, it uses an electromagnet at the top of the spindle to clamp the top half of the spinner to keep the disk in place - interesting to see.
If anyone has had the same problem, or has a fix let me know. It just became a tinkering toy.
Peace-out. |

| I bought one of these in March 2006 and initially it worked OK except for skipping parts of recorings (but I thought that may be bacause I was recording in SLP). Then, it started to really play up! It would only play and recognise CDs. No matter what I did I could not get it to read a disc - even one that it had recorded previously itself! There was of course no chance of making a recording as it refused to acknowledge the presence of a +RW or +R Disc. I returned it to ADSA (A Walmart Co. in UK) and was given a replacement, but, guess what, the very same things happened again. DO NOT TOUCH THIS PIECE OF RUBBISH WITH A VERY LONG BARGEPOLE!!! |

Thermal issues
Unregulated power supply, overheating issues, capacitors that bloom and power supplies that blow and take out the DVD loader.
Original power supplies do not have PC fans. Owners must disconnect power cords to prolonge the short life of these units. THe 540/105 firmware update is best.
Verbatim discs are recommended! Maxell media is inconsistent.
Do not write/format/ finalize when chassis is hot, or disc will be corrupted.
Depspite previously mentioned issues , creates good discs, WHEN WORKING. Unplug when not in use and you will have unit for a long time.
POWER SUPPLY is CHEAP and will fail!!!!
Replace power supply with a used PC power supply and you will have this unit a long time.

Total and utter piece of c**p. I bought one in March from Best Buy. It had a couple "Disc Errors" within the first 30 days resulting in a show not being recorded as scheduled. I initially figured it was the discs, but the problems got worse to the point it gave me "Disc Error"s the majority of the time...even when I was recording manually.
I went through the RMA process in May and sent it back [at my own expense] under the 90 Day Parts & Labor Warranty. They sent me a new one in early June and it worked for a month or two before it went south. Its worse than the one it replaced. It won't read ANY DVDs, except for a few unfinalized discs that are already burned. It reads "No Disc" even when there's a DVD in the tray. When I try to format a blank DVD...it gets to about 98/99% and freezes up as others have described.
I would send it back under the 12 Month Parts Warranty (which would cost me shipping + I think it was $25 or something like that) so that I could at least finalize the discs I have and buy something that actually works [at Wal-Mart instead of Best Buy so I have 90 days instead of 30 to return it,] but apparently CyberHome was raided by the FBI in June - shortly after I received my first replacement unit - and their inventory seized for CRIMINAL PATENT INFIRNGEMENT.
Their website has been gone since June and I don't hold out much hope they're even still in business, considering that their owners/executives may be facing felony indictment for selling DVD Players/Burners without paying royalties to Phillips (the owner of the patent on DVD technology). With the track record [of the units I've had and what I've heard from others] and especially considering their current situation...I wouldn't touch ANYTHING CYBERHOME with a 10 foot pole. |

I recently began to use the Cyberhome 1600 with the following settings:
Ui: C00065MCU
Servo: DX041D D 105N
Adsp: V08.00.01.46 R0.2
Control: C00000540
Version ( + - )
excellent picture and sound!!! Plays numerous formats. Very nice player with good features.
IN my opinion, there may be thermal issues, easily remedied with the addition of a PC fan. This contributes to the players unstable performance by some consumers.
Also the are some firmware issues!
The following nagging issues are present:
Currently using Maxell DVD+R ( 8X) discs.
When player has been used for more than 2 hours, there is a heat build up.
Unit will fail to format discs, fail to finalize discs, unit may fail to recognize discs.
Numerous write errors corrupt discs.
... i.e. When recording in SLP, the disc has a time range of 2 hours. Selecting 2 hours of record time usually provides excellent results.
FIRMWARE BUGS:
Instant record Mode and Overflow issues:
However, if one were to have already recorded a program to disc, the remaining safe program time should never be exceeded, as shown in the root menu.
For example: a 30 minute SLP episode is recorded. The remaining SLP time is then reduced to a safe limit of 1 hour and 30 minutes. This can be viewed in the Root Menu. Pressing instant record beyond the discs ability to safely record additional 1.5 hrs of programming to disc is not restricted. This contributes to a write error. The firmware does not assess and compare safe record time as NO ERROR MESSAGE is displayed indicating a write overflow, when in instant record mode.
Timer Record mode:
Timer record mode is the only mode that offers overflow write protection.
A disc of programming can be safely recorded using any combination of record speeds, if and only if, the media record time is not exceeded. Exceptions to this create unrecoverable errors.
Finalizing and Formating:
Prone to errors when poor media is used.
Finalizing and formatting issues seem to stem from thermal issues. Cyberhome 1600 seems Prone to these errors has been on or used for over 3 hours.
Allowing a 30 minute cool down & reboot, "seems" to temporarily suspend these errors.
I would imagine that installing a small PC fan into the chassis and tapping into the VDC power would improve the units performance. Has anyone tried this?
Was there a more stable firmware upgrade available for this unit prior to Cyberhome Corp's demise? |

| I purchased two Cyberhome DVR1600mu's at Walmart for $94 each. I have been using one with Memorex DVD+RW with good results. I have since upgraded the firmware with no apparent change. The other machine is from hell! It does ALL of the bad things others write about - disk errors, 98% formatting then stops, "unknown disk" messages, sudden jams and the machine won't respond to the remote only to unplugging the unit. Writes OK - then after hours of recording won't recognize the disc. The recorded DVD+R discs (Fuji, Philips, Optodisc) won't play in my PC DVD writer. I have two discs that play back OK and a dozen more that won't play back in either machine and a few that will only play in the "Good" machine or only after inserting multiple times. I was able to format and record onto a DVD-R by mistake and it works better than most of the DVD+R discs I have recorded. Upgrading the firmware did nothing to help and I think that half of these machines are lemons. Unfortunately I got one of the LEMONs. BUYER BEWARE!!! Time to get busy and supply new firmware CYBERHOME! and how about addressing some of these issues on your website instead of pretending your products are any good! |

This DVD worked for me perfectly for the past 5 months..after that..I have all kind of problems so I guess I'll be going to the trash can very soon.
Now it doesn't play commercial DVDS, CD's and it's very hard to get an .AVI file to play..I have to load the dvd for at least 10 times before it can read it. Also I can't format the disc which makes impossible to record anything.
Does anyone can suggest me how to upgrade the firmware if my units doesn't want to read the CD image??
Thanks |

DON'T BUY ONE OF THESE!!!!
It records, then after 2 hours, it has an error, rendering the disc worthless.
It pauses in the middle of recordings.
The remote and interface are terrible.
Don't even consider a Cyberhome. or BestBuy, for that matter, who sold this crap. I'll never buy from either of them again.
You get what you pay for, I guess. $99 down the toilet. |

From the start it had its problems. After a couple of weeks it started not seeing the disk. Now after a couple more weeks it will not work at all disk failure. I would not recommend to anyone. Also you call the 1-888-302-2727 for customer service and they no longer take email or telephone inquiries. I think if Best Buy is going to sell there products and Cyberhome does not want to stand behind it then should not sell this product.
Thanks |

I got a ZU unit, dated March 2006 (purchased in the US). I read at another site that the MU units play DivX, and the ZU units do not. Well, my ZU did not even recognize .avi files that I had on my disks.
At both Circuit City, and Best Buy, you can find the serial number on the box. Both stores had half and half between ZU/MU. If you buy one, MAKE SURE YOU GET ONE THAT SAYS "MU".
The DVD recording quality was horrible. Recording at 2hr/disk with the cyberhome looked approximately the same as recording 4hr/disk with a Samsung DVDR-120. Sometimes you could see blocks of color moving through the image, but the worst part was the horrible deformations around sharp edges. Even the stills (menus) were hard to read. They looked like like really bad jpegs. Some of the text in the menus was almost unreadable.
Stay away from this Cyberhome recorder. |

| Hi Tran..I have never had the problem you mention with the overheating at all. I have recorded baseball games completely, and never had a shutdown or even noticed the unit was warm. Have you applied the latest updates available on the Cyberhome page on the internet? I use Sony or Verbatim discs. Maybe you should get a new one before it's too late. Look for a recent production date on the package. Best of luck..really this is a great machine and a bargain, in my opinion. |

Thanks Garyk,
This feature is really cool!!!(record incrementally to the disk DVD+R).I notice when the unit is heated, recording will behave strangely("disc error" or pause/recording switch constantly...).The best way is to push stop, power off the unit for more than an hour or so to let it cool down.Any of you have seen the same problem?
I don't understand why other says that the disc is completely unsuable if the unit is suddenly powered OFF(?).If the disc is not finalize,we can continue to record from where it stopped,is it? or Does it need to stop successfully before powered OFF to avoid becoming useless disc?
Of course if this is a broadcast long movie,we can not
retrieve back the lost part but if it is from an old VHS tape/old DVD... we always can rewind to where it stops and to start continue record on the same disc from where it left.I really appreciate your inputs so that it can help me to decide to keep it or to return it. |

| Hi Tran...Yes you can record one segment at a time, remove the disc, and record again, until you finalize. I have a friend who is on tv occasionally in sports. Each time he is on, i put in "his" disc and record. It gives me a disc with each segment as a separate "chapter" so I can play the one I want, or it will just play the entire disc if I want. After I finalize of course no more recording, but it will play on most any DVD player. Amazing! |

Can we record on DVD+R incrementally before finalizing?
(Ex:Can we record 30 mins, stop and then continue record again next time until the disk is full then finalizing at the end?).
I knew that for DVD+R we can only burn once using the PC but I wonder if this DVD recorder can do incrementally
on DVD+R?
Thanks in advance |

What a POS. Internal tuner records look okay but S-video and composite inputs have murky muddy blacks. Using a samsung HDTV set top box for input which worked great on my ILO burner.
A-B editing works great and is an awesome feature on discs it plays back itself but PowerDVD on my PC freezes up at the edit point.
Would be good for time-shifting programs off air but the lack of quality from its inputs limits its use.
Manufactured feb 2006, MU version from best buy.
I usually put up with inexpensive stuff because I'm pretty cheap but this was not acceptable. Go ahead and give one a try if you don't mind wasting gas to return it. Who knows, maybe mine was miscalibrated. |

I bought this dvd on Bestbuy, Jan 2006.
As I live in Brazil I tried to use the suggested break code , on this page, for are 4.
Guess what?! It´s not working anymore!
No matter what disc I put on it, it says "no disc".
There is no technical assistance for this brand here.
Should I go to US to have it fixed or what?
It's too bad. I'm realy disappointed.

I have a CH DVR-1600, version MU1.
THE GOOD
I haven't found a commercial DVD yet that it wouldn't play. I couldn't say that about a more expensive Panasonic recorder that I had.
THE BAD
Connecting a cable line directly to the 1600 tv tuner produces a noticeable background hum that makes recording impossible. You can get around this by running a connection from the cable box to the "Video 1" inputs using RCA cables, but then you get copyright-related issues [constant switching from "Pause" to "Recording" when trying to record
something (even off TV), disc errors, etc].
These problems recently vanished when I downgraded my cable service, gave up the box and connected my cable line directly to the 1600 tuner. They came back again when I tried to use my old VCR as the tuner to get rid of the reoccurring hum.
I plan to keep the VCR as the tuner and get a GoDVD device to get rid of the copyright problems. I'll let you know how it goes.

Had troubles with this recorder from the start, but updated the firmware and that has taken care of the recording switching to pause by itself.
My secret for formatting discs: (Ritek DVD+R 8x)
Leave unit off all night.
Next morning put in DVD+R and format.
Take out formatted DVD+R and close tray.
Unplug power.
Count to 10.
Plug back in and repeat.
I did 7 in a row this way.
Once unit heats up, forget it!

| I bougt this unit on Best Buy. I liked that i had a Svideo imput. The Video Quality was OK But after burnig for a while I notice that the disk that I burn had problems. I gues is because it lacks of a cooling fan. In this past weekend I noticed that wile it was recording it began to switch back and forth between record and pause. I strongly recommend to buy another product until ciberhome fix their products. |

This player is not compatable with DTS 5.1! It will not output sound from my Eagles Hell freezes over DVD. Here is a copy from technical support:
Hi Mike
Your DVR-1600 will not support DTS digital audio output.
However, it should playback Dolby digital 5.1 properly.

Have to agree with recent posters here. This thing is a low cost solution, but falls far short on some features that are important. It's going back to BestBuy ASAP.
My biggest complaint is that I find my recordings do not have properly synchronized audio with the video. It's like watching old Kung-Fu movies, mouths are moving and spoken words do not match up! This is very annoying and apparently a known issue.
I am also very annoyed that the unit has to start up in DVD playback mode and does not remember your last input selection. If you must watch your cable box through input 1 it should default back to that input when you turn it on, but it does not.
Finally, the remote is completely retarded and must have been designed by a madman! Menu functions are not very intuitive and the button layout is HORRIBLE.
The ONLY feature I liked about this unit is that it records onto DVD+RW which seems to be the most friendly medium since you can immediately pop out a DVD+RW disc and use it elsewhere and then go back and record more WITHOUT ANY FINALIZATION PROCESS. I have not found the perfect DVD recorder for myself just yet, but I will look for a good unit that has this feature next.
