I bought this DVD player at least 7 years ago at Best Buy.
Worked great until recently, when I had to turn it on several times before it would stay on. At first, I thought the drive had gone bad. Wrong!
The problem was staring me in the face when I opened up the case.
The problem was a bulging capactor C16. It is a 2200uf 10V. Apparently, there were big batch of bad capactors that plagued Dell in 2003-2004 and even more recently in 2010.

| I have had this unit almost 3 years. I mostly have phased out its use due to its mediocrity. It has always had problems reading DVD -r disks. They freeze or pixelate in it. (I currently use Taiyo Yuden 4x) It does not read DVD MP3 disks. It does support PAL disks. It appears Cyberhome no longer supports it. They used to have bios upgrades for it on their website. In short, it appears to have great specifications but it does not live up to expectations. |

| this dvd player is bad ass. i used it for about a year and a half at my house, and it played everything i threw at it, burned dvds, svcds, vcds, images, mp3s, everything else. then i moved out of my house, and while being moved i messed it up, and it wouldn't read anything anymore. so i opened it up, and replaced the ORDINARY DVD-ROM drive with another i had laying around, and it plays everything perfectly once again. this dvd player will last for a lifetime, since you can just replace the dvd-rom whenever it dies (for $20 a pop nowadays, maybe less!) |

| The unit died on me about 13 months after purchasing it. I also purchased the cyberhome portable DVD player and the speakers stopped working a year after the purchase date. It did play every disc I had and was able to play region 2 dvds with the hack. That is the only reason I'm giving it 5 stars. No more Cyberhomes for me due to reliability problems. |

Does not read Verbatim DVD+RW disks from SamsClub. Recently started freezing on power ON which required using switch on back to completely power off and power on several times before getting it to work. Then I read an artical about bad capacitors causing problems in electronic gadgets like DVD players, computer montherboards etc., Then I opened up the DVD player to find a capacitor swollen and leaking a tiny bit of some brown liquid. I used a soldering gun to remove it and got a replacement from RadioShack and soldered it in. Now, it works just like it was when I first bought it mor e than a year ago. For those who want to look for bad capacitors and replace them, remember:
- capacitors have two ratings 1) Capacitance measured usually in micro farads mF 2) Voltage rating that indicates what is the max voltage it can tolerate.
- When you buy a replacement capacitor, if you can not get one with same voltage rating, just get one with higher voltage. That is what I did. Bad one was 1000mF, 10V and I replaced it with 1000mF, 30V. Has been working flawlessly for last two weeks. I usually run it 4-8 hours a day to play songs or childrens video. So, that is enough testing.
Info on bad capacitors can be found here:

I have used this player for well over a year. It has read almost all disks that i have tried in it.About 2 months ago i started having trouble with it. It would not read disks and i couldnt turn off the player unless i unplugged it. I was about to replace it with another player when i decided to take it apart. I read where others have replaced the drive itself, so i was curious. What i noticed was that the power board had 3 swollen capacitors. I ordered replacements from Mouser. After i installed them i found that the player works as new.
An interesting note is when i opened the box to investigate i noticed the drive installed was a Cyberhome CDRW drive. |

| This has been a great player for the last 16 or so months that I've had it. Just recently I've had problems with it playing discs. It'll sometimes load then sometimes not. It'll play then freeze for a couple of seconds and then play ok. It'll play fine then stop and put up the logo screen and when you hit play again it restarts. Once I opened it up I realized that it had a reagular dvdrom drive in it. After seeing somebody else post about chaging out the drive I think I'm gonna give that a try if I can find one cheap. |

I WAS WRONG I WAS WRONG I WAS WRONG I WAS WRONG
This is to CORRECT my previous review. I gave it a 10 to compensate.
I called tech support and they asked if the DVD player was 'routed thru a VCR?'. ahhh YES.
(the VCR wasn't allowing the encryted signal thru).
I reconfigured the player direct to the TV and everything works fine. No complaints.
btw, if you try the hack (1379) to make it region free (I failed to) but you can improve the color quality and fine tune the settings.
Sorry if I misled anyone. jc, tampa |

YES.. my Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 won't play Blockbuster DVDs anymore, either. BUT, if I take that same $4.95, 2 day DVD rental to the kid next door and copy it... walla presto abrakadabra and now it plays perfect.
You know what I think? I think playing this Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 with a "backed up" disc does something to it (regarding macrovision). Next time it can't ignor the macrovision. Thus the light/dark fades and sparkles.
I firmly believe reflashing the DVD chip would solve all the DVD problems.... but how?
I upgraded with the 500.iso disc and I can't see any difference. It has always (still does) play SVCDs, VCD's, .jpegs and long audio ebooks well.
good luck to all, jc, tampa |

They must have put in the DVD loaders from the bad batch on this Player. I have read that so many people have the same problem with not playing DVD's anymore, same here.
I installed a regular DVD Rom that I had laying around (happened to be an Aopen). Tried all kinds of disc and so far it has played everything (DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, VCD, SVCD etc....). Including MiniDVD (right from the start, no navigation)at a higher bit rate than it was playing before. Which was @ 4000 kbit/s (i've tried 6000 kbits/s and it worked). I had payed around $35.00 for this DVD rom earlier this year so it was all worth it.
Now it's just a matter of putting the finishing touches on mounting the drive. It is in fact a nice DVD player with progressive scan. It's also hackable. |

I have had a Cyberhome 500 for 14 months and have been very pleased with the way that it plays all dvd's from all regions on NTSC. 3 days ago it died! First thoughts were that the power supply unit had fried but no odours of burning etc. Anyway, after a lot of messing around and experimentation I have it back working again.
Removed the power cord and left it off for about 10 minutes. Plugged it back in again with the on/off button depressed. Released and then pressed the on button and it came on again. I reloaded the software disk from Cyberhome last night and it has worked since.
Big relief because it has worked well for 14 months in my daughters room and as I only paid $49 dollars for it new I didn't want to spend money getting it repaired.
BestBuy have the 300 on sale at $39.95 so I may pick up a backup the next time there. |

| One problem I have with this player is the remote control cannot function after I bought it new a couple month. Replacing with new batteries does not fix the problem. The control knob on the unit does not work very good. IT is hard to use it to skip forward or backward. It has quality problem in the design. I might have to stay away from this brand name when purchasing another electronic piece. |

| Have had my unit since about January 2002. Lately I have used it with DVD-R Optodisk 1X gold surface. It works fairly well but is not perfect. It tends to have problem with longer movies. It, also, erratically gives pixels and freezes sometimes. I have tried same disks with other units including Magnavox MDV455, Coby DVD 218 and Philips DVD726. This unit works better than those. My best players for DVD-R continue to be my cheapo DVD drives on my computer. This unit also played ok a DVD+R Fuji disk I made. It works great with MP3. I make my DVDs with Emprex unit and DVD X Copy Xpress. It, also, works great with other regions as #2 commercial DVDs. I'm region 1. |

Bought at Best Buy tonight, will return tomorrow. Absolutely will not load disks of any type. Tried several commercial movies and a disk of jpegs on a CD-R. Tray opens and closes and I get a message that the disk is loading but after about 3 min. a message appears on the screen that there is no disc in the unit. To bad, features looked attractivel. guess I'll look elsewhere.

| The player worked great, including multi-region after I programmed the hack. However, after 9 months it stopped playing DVDs. I tried several and none would load. I had bought the buyer's protection at Best Buy and they said I could exchange it. However, BestBuy in West Los Angeles no longer sells CyberHome so I have to get another brand. |

| After just 6 months, started to have problems reading regular DVD's. Now after 9 months it refuse to read most DVDs. This is such a low quality junk. Don't waste your money. Too bad the feature list was good especially it does correct PAL to NTSC conversion. But, if it does not read all the features are meaningless. |

| This is probably one of the greatest players if you need to play back a PAL DVD on a NTSC TV. The conversion from PAL to NTSC is most excellent. I have only had conversion problems with a few titles and the problems seem to be that they (the original PAL DVD discs) were made very cheaply and thus probably authored incorrectly resulting in poor PAL to NTSC but I've only found 3 titles that are like this in my collection and I fault the authoring of these titles and not the Cyberhome. I have some DVD+RW discs made on a Philips standalone DVD recorder and it plays these fine (PAL format too with great NTSC conversion). However, this unit is not 100% compatible with DVD-R discs. It will play a DVD-R that is a bit-for-bit copy of an original DVD5 disc (using ISO read/write mode with DVD Decrypter) but it will NOT play DVD-R discs recorded on a standalone Panasonic recorder, such as the DMR-E20 model. I've also done some DVD9 to DVD-R backups with DVD2ONE (full disk mode) and these work well on an old Pioneer DVD player I have but will NOT play at all on the Cyberhome CH-500. So most likely this Cyberhome is best used for playing PAL on a NTSC TV and mostly with studio made original discs only. If you are into SVCD or do a lot of DVD-R stuff then you might want a second player that's more compatible. The strong point of the Cyberhome is the excellent PAL to NTSC. PLEASE NOTE: It is the only player I am aware of that has a built-in DTS decoder that will output the DTS on the regular RCA Stereo Audio out jacks. Rather nice if you don't have a DD/DTS receiver. Also please note that the macrovision hack also disables CGMS/A which comes in handy as I have used the Cyberhome to play back a PAL DVD with conversion to NTSC and then recorded the signal to a standalone Panny DVD recorder resulting in a high nice quality NTSC DVD-R disc. Something to think about since you can let your friends with NTSC only equipment borrow your movie collection ... assuming you have the $400 or so for a standalone Panny DVD recorder. As for VCD it does well with the standard settings but most people have had problems with SVCD although the newest firmware update seems to fix this. BIG NOTE HERE: The original firmware is the best version to keep for PAL to NTSC conversion. This is the main point of this player and if it is important to you then don't upgrade the firmware. The new Panasonic S35 is only $99 at the time I am writing this and has played every DVD-R I've thrown at it so it makes a good second player. Save your Cyberhome for those PAL DVD discs. |

Quick Note:
I can play any and all recordable media thanx to replacing factory loader with Pioneer DVD-500M (aka DVD-118 tray model) using factory RPC-2 firmware v1.07 flashed to RPC-1 firmware v1.11. |

After the firmware upgrade, only thing missing is mpeg1/2 ISO.
As long as you stay close to the standard bitrate, it plays.
Tried XSVCD (4000kbits/s) just to see if it's working and it worked.

the player has it's quirks but overall not too bad. i have hd trouble with the latest firmware and thinking of trying to revert the firmware one level. Problems typically are, runs very hot. overheats and locks up. tray won't open always. since the bios upgrade it'll come on and function in total random orders. sometimes won't even power on
does play all regions nicely (when it works)
svcd seem to be jittery according to the bitrate. ie the higher the jittier
