| Only good for store bought DVDs. A couple homemade DVDs work but most stutter, skip chapters, and the machine ends up freezing completely. I have made so many homemade DVDs trying to figure what was the pattern. I did tests with all kinds of differences in bitrate for both video and audio to see when the stuttering happens. I never could find out. |

| Our unit was manufactured in January 2005 and will read without error every disk that we put in it, including DVD-R and DVD+R. I know 2 other people who have this same unit and they do not have not experienced any problems with them. |

I, like many others here, lost the remote for this unit (actually my wife did). I didn't want to pay $20 for a new remote from Cyberhome when the unit cost me $30. After some searching, I found a universal remote which controls the Cyberhome CH-DVD 320 (and should also work on the Cyberhome CH-DVD 300)!
It's Radioshack brand "4-in-1 Family Favorites Remote Control", model 15-2142. Best of all, it's cheap (on sale now for $6.99 and regular price is $9.99). Works like a charm! |

Plays store bought DVD with no problem for me. Plays a few home made DVDs, but stutters badly on others. Tried playing mpeg off cd and it does not work. Tried playing divx and xvid off cd and it does not work.
Basically it is only good for playing store bought DVDs. |

I received this player for free from someone that had it for several months and stopped working - would not power on. I found that the power supply on these units is under rated. This particular unit had two of its power supply output capacitors blown. One was a 2200 mfd @ 10v and the other was a 1000 mfd @ 10v. The supply outputs are 5v and 12v so shouldn't at least the 1000mfd (this is the filter on 12v side) be at least rated at 16v? Well I found some capacitors with these values rated at 16v in my spare parts box and threw them in (these replacements were sightly larger physically so I had to unsolder the two low ESR capacitors (which were not damaged) bend the leads slightly and solder them back in. I turned the unit on and it played flawlessly for the past year.
I suspected that many problems that people have with these units could be traced back to a weak/noisy power supply. Also heat management may be a problem as the processor on these units uses the case as a heat sink. If the conductive paste dries up or the contact point becomes loose the processor will overheat and cause all sorts of erratic behavior as it warms up. So if you are having problems check the to problamatic points I have mentioned before you decide to curse this cheap Chinese unit and fill up our landfills. It truly is a great unit but it does have some buit-in flaws - if it didn't we would have no reason to shop and shopping is part of the American culture.

| I was so excited when we decided to get a dvd player, but on a limited budget we chose to go with an obviously low cost item, big mistake, I should have taken my money and just flushed it in the toilet then i wouldnt be as disapointed, atleast then i would not have this huge stack of dvds WE CAN"T WATCH, we had problems probably the 4th time we used it,we would put a movie in and it would just keep stopping, brand new disks right from the package NO SCRATCHES, we cleaned it over and over again within 1 month we just started using our ps2 to watch movies because as soon as you put the disk in the lights would start flashing from red to green then just shut off. Piece of garbage doesn't do that with cd's it plays any cd any day of the week, but HELLO, i bought a DVD player. I am so mad and disapointed. What a piece of junk, DON"T WASTE YOUR MONEY your better of buying a used ps2. |

| I just exchanged my old Cyberhome 320 for a new one from Target, the old one began skipping chapters after 7 months of use. The new model has a different menu and user interface than the old one. New on screen notification symbols are what I have notice primarily, I'm unsure about how to check for any underlaying firmware changes though. |

| this beast plays 99.999% of everything i've thrown at it. the exceptions, that i've tried, are miniDVD & an xsvcd that i downloaded(probably too high a bit rate, as its played others fine). it did play the miniDVD, but it was VERY choppy. it plays mpgs right off cd-r and dvd-r. best bang for the buck, plus it has a region-free hack. hooray! |

There are at least two different versions of the "CH-DVD 320". Not sure why this is, but the internal firmware is signifigantly different between the two.
I purchased mine at Target in the U.S. and found out the difference when a friend bought one and we started to compare the two. The earler model was manufactured Feb 2004 and is distinguished by the fact that remote control has an 'effects' button near the lower right side, where the newer Mar 2004 units have a pair of buttons at the lower right which allow the volume to be adjusted.
Aside from the manufacturing date, if you look closely at the box, you can actually see this difference on the pictured remote.
Here is a quick compairison of the two versions.
The older Feb 2004 model (bios 39u) with the 'effects' button on the remote seems to be the same as the older CH-DVD 300 model. It has a slighly different on screen interface and includes an audio processor with settings like 'rock', 'classical', and 'jazz'. The audio processor seems to add reverb which I did no find particularly pleasing. This model also allows the contrast brightness and saturation of the output video to be adjusted. These adjustments will effect all modes [DVD, VCD, MPG File, and JPG File]. This is a nice feature which is handy for dealing with badly encoded VCD disks but the steps are too large so the adjustments tend to overcompensate.
The newer March 2004 model (bios 10s) does not have the audio processor modes or video adjustments in the setup but does allow the volume to be adjusted right out of the dvd player which can help to adjust the DVD player to match the audio levels from your other AV components.
Both versions of the CH-DVD 320 support direct playback of MPG files from CDR or DVD R/RW +/- media without the necessity of disk authoring the video as a 'VCD' or 'DVD', but there are some differences.
The older version [with 'effects' button] supports folders and will see a file system very much like the same disk on a PC, where the newer version [with 'volume' buttons] scans every file on the DVD or CDR and dumps them all into the same listing. There are advantages to both approaches and it to bad you have to choose and can't have it both ways. The older version with folders is nice for organizing large numbers of MP3 files on a DVD for playback by album/artist. The newer version assigns arbitrary 'track' numbers to every MP3, MPG, or JPG that it finds and you can then use the 'Program' button to add them to a play list. The tradeoff is that you can't have it all, because the older version of the CH-DVD 320 with "Folder" support doesn't seem to allow you to create a custom 'playlist' from MPG or MP3 files at all, so you gain the ability to organize your media in folders at the expense of being able to create a custom playlist. The newer version creates one massive listing of up to about 999 'tracks' including every playable image or sound file it finds on any folder on the disk, this lets you easily use the 'track' numbers the player assigns to create a custom playlist of up to a dozen tracks (which is a little small).
So with the Feb2004/'effects button' version of the CH-DVD 320 you get 'Folder' support which is great but you can't build a custom MPG or MP3 playlist because the player doesn't assign 'track' numbers which is not so great.
With the March2004 version of the CH-DVD 320 the player scans the disk and finds everything and assigns everything an arbitrary 'track' number so you can build a custom playlist, but you can't turn on 'Folder' mode so the listing can be large and cumbersome to navagate.
The older version with support for viewing files by 'Folder' is also little more fussy about dealing with long file names. This is apparently because the older version will only read up to the ISO 9660 limit of 30 characters or so. With long MP3 file names including Artist-Album Name-Title it's pretty easy to exceed this limit. Most modern DVD burner software will burn dual file name formats with ISO/Jolet or ISO/UDF file names. The problem is that the ISO side can get truncated at 30 characters cutting off the MP3 or MPG extension. This doesn't show up on the PC because it can see the secondary file system but the older Feb2004 firmware on the CH-DVD 320 sees the truncated ISO file name only and therefore doesn't see the all important MPG, JPG, or MP3 extension. The result is that these files disapear from their associated folders [ouch]. The solution is to tell your Burning software to burn a ISO9660 compatible disk and keep the file names down to about 30 characters INCLUDING THE 4 CHARACTERS NEEDED FOR THE '.MP3' EXTENSION. If you have an original firmware CH-DVD 320 [remote has 'effects' button] and have been having problems with some of your MP3 or MPG files refusing to show up in the folder where you put them, this is the reason.
The newer version (manufacture date march2004 bios 10u, with 'volume' buttons on remote) does better with long file names, so if you don't like the prospect of having to deal with renaming your MPG or MP3 files, you might want to look for the newer version (bios 10u) unless 'Folder' support is very important to you.
Both versions of the 320 support composite, S-Video, and Component based Progressive Scan with pretty much the same video quality [which looks amazingly good, especially considering the units low price]
Another difference which may be important to you concerns 'quick scanning'. Both version have very good 'quick scan' capabilities for VCD and DVD encoded disks (2x up to about 32x) but for MPG files on plane old ISO9660 file system disks [which have not been created using DVD or VCD authoring software] the situation is a little different and only the older version Feb2004 (Bios 39u) would support any kind of quick forward or reverse scanning. The newer Mar2004 bios 10u version would not scan MPG files on non-authored disks (was fine for home authored VCD and DVD disks though, as long as they were properly recognized). This seemed to be a format compatiblilty issue and not related to the Laser or transport quality because overall the newer Mar2004 CH-DVD 320 was at least as good if not better at reading flaky or marginal quality disks it just didn't want to 'quick scan' through non VCD or DVD disks (although it would play the video perfectly).
Both versions do take care of PAL to NTSC conversions seemlessly, so you can view any format media without a multi-standard TV.
I have heard the stories about problems with these low cost players, but those I have seen did about as well at reading disks which were marginal as other players which cost a LOT more money, and the video output quality is excellent. |

Just thought I'd post this. I have seen reviews positive for the 300 and 400, so I wrote in and asked CyberHome's tech support about the differences and this was the reply:
"320 is exactly same as 300. 320 is exclusively for Target. That is the only difference.
