Anyone know who made this player? The stupid thing doesn't even have an FCC-ID! Still can't figure out how to play unauthored mpg files. VCD-DVD won't work. Jpg won't work. Photo-CD won't work. MP3 will work, but definatly NOT with long filename! Actually the only thing that does work, are DVD, VCD, SVCD's, audio and MP3-CD's. I start hating this player more and more. It may be cheap, but it isn't worth a lot either. It's just a big waste of my 90 dollar, since I could have bought a much better player for only a couple of bucks more (or perhaps even less!)

Newer versions of this player should also support MPEG-video on normal Data CD/DVD and Kodak Picture CD. VCD on DVD principially works (the player recognizes it as DVD video) but after a very short time, video and sound get out of sync, the video seems to run faster than the audio. Haven't tried it with higher bitrates. As of SVCD on DVD, you should only patch the first header if you plan to include SVCD content to a DVD 'cause if you patch the entire file, you'll only see flickering rubbish on the screen. With only the first header patched, you'll see the flickering rubbish only one second. If you use too low bitrates (under 1,2 MBit for video), it might go out of sync. Then re-wind the vid a little bit (2 secs) and it is synchronous again. For XVCD, XSVCD and other non-standard formats, make sure the minimum video bitrate is 500 kbit because with a lower bitrate, the video begins to "stutter" (runs for half a second, then freezes half a second, runs again half a second and so on). With MiniDVD, I made the best results with a VBR MPEG2 in 352x288 with bitrates from 600 to 1500kbps and an audio bitrate of 160kbps. There, you can fit approx. the same amount of video as for a VCD on the CD and the quality is somewhat better than VCD (can be compared with a good VHS video). For the audio tracks in your MPEGs, you can use any bitrate you like (and your authoring software likes), the player will just play them nicely. For encoding I use TMPGENC Plus 2.51, I burned VCDs and SVCDs with a 4/8/32/8 combo drive in my laptop, an old Fujitsu Spinbird 4x4x32 drive and a BenQ CRW-4816P and all CDs can be read, where you should use a maximum burning speed of 24x (faster burned CDs tend to freeze, go out of sync etc. in the player). Now I use a NEC ND-1300A with official FW 1.08 and it reads all discs burned with this drive (except DVD+R). We bought the player in June 2002 in Germany for 125 Euros, back then it was the cheapest DVD player we could get. The Medion 4883 player and Cyberhome CH-402 are nearly the same players, they are only different in details. Differences: Medion player: other case, region free hacks with remote control don't work, picture when no disc is inserted shows also the MEDION logo. Needs a long time for recognizing DVD+RW/-RW Cyberhome CH-402: picture when no disc inserted is a gray one with a CyberHome logo and the slogan "Digitize your home", the LED display is a bit differend (READ instead of LOAD, INSERT DISC instead of NO DISC) and the OSD captions are a bit different (DISK EINLEGEN instead of KEINE DISC, LESEN instead of DISK LADEN etc.), region free hack with remote control is different To switch the Cybercom region-free, do the following: Switch on your player, press OPEN on the remote so the tray opens, then press CLEAR, 1, 3, 6, 9 and then the number of the RC you want to set your player to (0=code free), then press OPEN again to close the tray, then press standby to soft-power it off and then stand-by to switch it on again. To control your settings, press: OPEN - SETUP - 1 - 3 - 6 - 9 - 3 times LEFT, once RIGHT, then go to the new appearing menu item, here you can see if the RC is 0.

Like: MPEG1/2 ISO, plays MPEG1/MPEG2 files with no authoring and Kodak Picture CD/JPG image support I've tried over and over again, but it won't play unautored mpeg files, and refuses to show me any jpg files or Kodak Picture CD (I have 3 old Picture CDs). But which annoys me about as much is that I've been searching for new firmware (I hoped that would fix some of these problems), and I can't find it anywhere. I can't even find the manufacturer of this thing!

If you add those buttons you will have Audio selection in svcd. Subtitles are not supported. Very great dvd.

Opening the remote control is possible, but is of little use: just bookmark, interval jumps, etc... region free, no probs. remote codes see down. euroconnector cable included, nice player, but not the top. Höher has the same machine I guess, just front panel is different. HL

I've got the selectable audio tracks working ("To have support of selectable audio tracks is necessary an easy modification of the remote control, to use some button hidden in it (audio sel. is above the ZOOM key, PBC sel. is above TITLE MENU key and a preview sel. is under 7 key.") I still don't know how to get the selectable subtitles working.
