is not a bad unit i bought it at canadian tire
198.00 at the time was good price, tried some different media files, play vob file when slpit
and put on cdrw disk, and mpeg 1 files, and ofcourse mp3, not bad for its time! bought in 2001 and now got dvd writer so far have all disks i tried worked. down side get warm and
the dvds freeze once in a while, needs venting,
so dont place anything on top, would be good idea to install a small computer fan at the back!

Comments:
This is a followup to my earlier comment about this player.

I acutally ended up keeping it and am still quite happy with it. I routinely burn XSVCD's using VBR with the max rate of 5000 kbits/sec (I've tested the player with up to 6000 kbits/sec but never higher -- anything higher than 5000 makes litte sense) and the player plays them like a charm. There's no MacroVision protection, so I could tape movies all I want (I just don't bother).

Every once in a while when watching a DVD or XSVCD I notice a frame dropped (probably caused by buffer overrun) resulting in a visible picture jerk, but it happens very infrequently and doesn't bother me. It happens totally randomly, i.e. i never get the same jerk after i rewind and play that spot again.

All in all, this is a solid player with some nice features for the money I paid for it.

I can make perfect VHS copies without anything to block the macrovision protection, just plug it in your VCR and Voilà!!!

Comments:
When I first got this player (which seems to be the same as Electrohome EH8181) I was extatic because of it's low price (CDN $199.99), built-in MP3 decoder and no Macrovision. But as I experimented with it I discovered a few problems with it:

1) The player doesn't correctly handle fast-forward or rewind when playing SVCDs -- it just jumps to the beginning of the video and gets stuck in a loop several frames long until you hit STOP. This is a MAJOR problem for those who, like me, want to play home videos encoded as SVCDs.

2) It only seems to correctly playback SVCDs having 29.97 frames per second. SVCDs at 23.976 fps (reverse-telecined) playback with a jerky motion every several frames and sometimes with an audio hiccup. This happens only at the regular playback speed, i.e. if you play in slow motion or frame-by-frame the effect disappears. (I haven't actually made sure the offending SVCD is reverse-telecined, but the friend I borrowed it from says it is.)

3) It can't playback PAL videos regardless of the encoding format -- resulting output scrolls and is B&W.

4) This model doesn't have a soft "power on/off" control that would allow to turn it on and off using the remote. You actually have to push the power button on the player's panel! (Granted, this is not really a major problem, just an nuisance.)

I think I am going to take this player back and get something better.

:)
