Once upon a time
I wanted to replace an old VCR, Laserdisc, and DVD changer with a single unit. I also wanted to copy a few old home videos to DVD, just a few family weddings, my dads retirement party and my parents 50th wedding anniversary. Worked fine for a while but after updating firmware all audio output digital and analog stopped working including internal TV tuner audio. Most commercial DVDs will not play or even be recognized (invalid media). I just want the thing to play tapes and DVDs don't care if it records at all. I currently use my PC to capture my homemade videos edit then burn Dual Layered DVDs. The company Go Video is no longer taking calls or repairs. I have left messages but no one returns calls. Anyone thinking of updating your firmware DON'T. The last update I installed wouldn’t even take. It instructs me to return it to repair shop. This is the first time I’ve documented a product that was decommissioned via a firmware upgrade. I think I was duped and robbed and the funny thing is the old DVD changer and Laserdisc player this was going to replace still work fine. Anyone who knows of a hack/fix that will just make this thing play DVDs and tapes would be very popular.

| My kids said that they could not play the recorded DVD movies on another machine besides the RV4000. I thought they just did not know how to. I now find that I cannot play ANY recorded DVD on any other machine beside the RV that it was recorded on. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. |

I Have played backup DVD's on this unit that would not play on my Lite-On VCR-9006. Playing these dvd's on the lite-On resulted in an eror message that stated "INVALID MEDIA".
Of course neither unit would copy "copyprotected" VCR tapes to DVD.
I noticed that DON posted a message on June 5th, 2005 stating that he was able to use a Digital Video Stabilizer that could be purchased on E-Bay to allow him to copy protected tapes. I would like to know how he was able to contected the Digital Video Stabilizer to the unit.
Has anyone else been able to do this? |

| First unit would not power on after initial set-up unless unplugged. Had to redo set-up each time. Second unit from COMPUSA eventually started losing tracking on DVDs. Fixed this with a lens cleaner, but by then GO-Video support had talked me into the firmware upgrade. That locked up my machine forever. Returned to COMPUSA for repairs/replacement. After 2 weeks they hadn't touched it, and my wife talked them into replacing it. The new unit had the same problem as the first. Ended up getting store credit despite having kicked in for the extra warranty from COMPUSA. Salespeople were useless and knew nothing about the DVD Recorders. Needless to say, no more GO Video products for me, and no more COMPUSA once my credit is used up. |

It's obvious from most reviews on this unit that there are a lot of faulty ones out there. I am pleased and pretty shocked that this player has performed so well for me. Both VHS and DVD have played flawlessly without any image freezing or overheating. I should point out that don't have the latest firmware upgrade either.
The VHS-DVD and DVD-VHS recording buttons have worked without any problems. I have recorded from my sat. receiver, using timer and one-touch recording, to both formats with excellent results. I have copied from my camcorder and Sampo DVE620(macro free dvd player)to tape and disc as well.
Like one poster has already stated, I got this player to mainly transfer camcorder footage and VHS to DVD. I also needed to replace my VCR(I still have plenty of Wiggles and Baby Einstein tapes to play for a couple more years)and was hoping to save some space. The fact that this unit is one of the few that is balck was a small consderation as my other components are as well.
In conclusion this player has been a great purchase. After all rebates and tax included it has cost me $181.00 out of pocket. I think it would be foolish to ignore the negative reviews for this player as I have no doubt they are true. Buying from CompUSA and other stores with no hassle return policies is highly recommended as you could easily get a unit that is "evil". My experince seems to be more the exception than the rule at this point so buyer beware. |

I posted about this soon after I bought it. Now after several months I am still very pleased. VHS-to-DVD recording is great (and that's the main reason I got it) as well as DVD playback.
I not only wanted to say that I'm still happy with it, but also to POST SOME NEW NEWS - there is a new firmware upgrade on the website at:
http://www.govideo.com/?GV=RV4000UP
The website says: "These two upgrades improve the overall reliability of DVD recordings, including the recording and playback of certain x8 recordable DVD disc brands, and enhanced reliability of +RW recordings." Well, I wasn't having probelems like that, but decided to upgrade mine anyway, and I'm glad I did, because now it plays VCD too! That was my only complaint prior to this update - that it wouldn't play VCDs (it recognized the disc as a VCD but then popped up a message saying it can't play it). Anyhow, now with VCD playback, it finally gets the coveted "10" rating from me.

| Had TREMENDOUS problems with this unit recording to DVD+R until I switched to 4x media. I had purchased Verbatim 8x DVD+R at Best Buy (10 disk pancake box for $2.99!!), but recordings to these disks would hang up the recorder a few minutes into the burn (requiring a power cycle to recover). Unit worked fine with Ricoh DVD+RW supplied with the recorder. Tech support told me that 8x media just won't work with this unit. I'm now using Maxell 4x with good results. Go Video recommends Verbatim, Imation and Phillips media on their IVR system -- but they don't document the 4x requirement anywhere. |

Have not had a chance to try all formats and features, but so far it works well for recording and playing DVDs. VHS also plays well. Only issue was it seems to lock up when turned off (hangs at "bye" on the display) - you can avoid this by turning "auto clock set" to "off", or eventually it should find the clock signal on the PBS channel and turn itself off.
I'll post again after I've had a chance to test out everything more thoroughly, but I wanted to post that it DOES NOT PLAY VCD. Seems so far nobody else has mentioned this, and VCD is indicated as a playable format in the listing here on VideoHelp. The odd thing is that when you load a VCD, it recognizes it (disc icon in upper left corner of screen says "VCD") but then pops up a window saying it cannot play this type of disc. Customer service confirmed that it cannot play VCDs.
While I'm writing, I will mention in this machine's favor is that for the price ($200 @ CompUSA) it can't be beat. Unlike most low-end recorders, it has a STEREO tuner, so it's great for recording TV shows. The VCR is HiFi, and makes great recordings from VHS to DVD. The manual indicates that it cannot copy Macrovision-protected tapes, but I got perfect DVD recordings with it from various VHS movies that I'd had problems copying using separate VHS deck and DVD recorder.
Bottom line? If it played VCDs I'd have given it a "10", but I had to downgrade it for this deficiency. If you have no desire to play VCDs, or don't mind having to keep another player around for that purpose, grab one next time they go on sale for $200 - at that price it can't be beat! |

1. Locks up. I have to unplug to reset.
2. Says "No Disc" but there is a disc in the unit
3. Stops recording during a session.
4. Will not play on other DVD players after finalizing.
5. I can set the "Time of Day". But after a power cycle it changes time.
This design was obviously not tested. I would suggest you not buy.

Follow up update on the issues I outlined below about this Cinevision RV4000 unit. Go Video cust serv know that this system has flaws.
And, oh, yea, now the VHS unit does not show a picture, only sound. Hmmmm. Good producet (not!). I have used this unit a lot to test it, and since still within return period, this unit is being returned, not for exchange. Better off waiting for a DVD-Recorder and HDD unit. The tape that finally messed up the VHS unit was appropriately SPINAL TAP - the tape got caught in the gear inside. The VHS unit though always made some sort of growling grinding sound, not fluid from start.
Here's update on the issues I brought up in earlier post:
1) freezes/lock-up - must unplug and replug to use unit: you have to turn auto clock OFF (problem fixed but now no auto clock) - BAD
2) auto chapter does not turn off even when selected in setup to "off" - I deleted chapters to set my own, and my own chapters not recognized in DVD players other than this Cinevision unit - BAD
3) change index picture function does work but it is tedious. The instruction manual is WRONG. While disc is in play mode, you have to press "edit" which starts the disc and content plays, and "edit" menu pops up. But be quick because the edit menu leaves the screen and can not be recalled after 5 seconds. No mention in manual.
4) DVD burner operates OK, sometimes allowing me to copy a copyrighted tape, sometimes not. But what's worse is that I have noticed 3 discs that say "empty" (not recorded) after copying and finalizing. I have burned 30 discs successfully, and now 5 unsuccessfully.
5) Go Video sent me the upgrades on a burned disc, but before I could install via DVD drive the VHS component failed...this unit is being returned.
DO NOT BUY. |

| Do not under any circumstances buy this product. There is a reason they keep dropping the price on it. The system does not work. The easy one-step recording is a joke. The system is prone to locking up and has to be unplugged to be reset. The first clue this system is not very good is the warning that you see when you first open the box. It says not to return the unit to the store, to call an 800 number first. Don't waste your time with this unit. If you are looking for a DVD recorder, keep looking. |

as of this review I have returned and exchanged 3x with CompUSA. Go Video cust serv know that this system has flaws. Here's my experience:
1) freezes/lock-up - must unplug and replug to use unit: you have to turn auto clock OFF (problem fixed but now no auto clock) - BAD
2) auto chapter does not turn off even when selected in setup to "off" - I deleted chapters to set my own, and my own chapters not recognized in DVD players other than this Cinevision unit - BAD
3) change index picture function not work - you can try delete the index picture before finalizing disc but the system doesn't delete the index picture and "add index picture" function eliminated once you select to delete (which doesn't happen) the index picture - BAD
4) after burning 4 DVD-Rs vis VHS->DVD, system locked up on next 2 burning sessions just after pressing pause and stop to end the copy session; 5 hrs wasted sitting there to see it finish - BAD
5) the 2 upgrade downloads from Go Video website do not work - BAD
6) OK, here's the kicker: NOW THE UNIT, AFTER THE 2ND POST-BURN FREEZE, DOESN'T WORK AT ALL - DOESN'T PLAY VHS, DOESN'T PLAY DVDS OR CDS - DOESN'T DO ANYTHING, NO RESPONSE. IT DOES TURN ON AND OFF. - BAD
I called Go Video, I emailed Go Video.
DO NOT BUY.
Go Video says Cinevision is Radioshack-branded unit from Go Video. I bought this also at CompUSA for net $200. not worth it...prices will fall on other better manufacturers with multi-format burners. Oh, and by the way, RadioShack sells this exact same model for $350. How do explain that?

| Bought at CompUSA at Thanksgiving ($200 AR). Works great as home-video copier - just press Copy VCR->DVD and walk away. Come back at your leisure. Also copies from satellite receiver wery well. My one complaint is that the timer system doesn't work. It would be so nice to do delayed copying, but timer seems to mess up every time. I have yet to have success using the timer. Otherwise, this is a pretty cool machine (esp. for the price). |

| Have used for 3 weeks, love it. burned straight from live tv and from tivo (direct tv) worked great. Have an extensive collection of copied dvds (dvd xcopy express) both + and - all work great. No freezes so far, am using the Firmware = Version BDR-Z172. Have not converted a vhs tape to dvd yet will do that during christmas vacation. Bought it at Comp usa for 199.00 after rebate. worked great out of the box. hookup was easy, tivo-recorder-home theather-tv. currently using RCA cables, will switch to component video later. |

| This unit has a tendency to overheat and freeze up. After transferring video from a non-copy-protected VHS tape to DVD, the unit often locks up (i.e., system clock freezes, or get stuck in a mode that you can't change) and needs to be unplugged and replugged. |
