Play's just about eveything that matters - MPEG4 support excepted. VCD/SVCD support activated with the handset hack. Multiregion. With it setup for a PAL only tv it was doing a true 30 frame NTSC to 25 frame PAL conversion. This was obvious from the slightly jerky playback. With it setup on Auto for the tv there's smooth playback. The tv doesn't do NTSC but it does do PseudoPAL/PAL60 so it's apparent that this must be what the player is outputing for it to achieve this smooth playback. The Richer Sounds site indicates it does PAL60 so this makes sense.

320 kilobit CBR MP3's play back perfectly, as do VBR MP3's (LAME -Preset Standard and Preset Extreme).

JPEG / MP3 / ISOMPEG CD's play back fine with every combination of ISO or UDF or ISO/UDF bridge file systems that I've tried - up to the latest UDF 2.01 , although CD's with plain UDF filesystems and no ISO have the filenames all changed to underscores (but they do still play!).

A very good player for the money paid.

Suffers from the same problem as the Lite-on 5001, jesky and stuttery picture when the passthrough is used.

Also the hack listed here no longer works on newer models, the current hack is :
1. Power on player
2. if "no disk" is displayed then
3. press 0,1,8,6,0,0,1 on the remote
4. press select
5. power the unit off then on

the machine is now region free :)

Got this player from richer sounds uk.
Ive had loads of different kinds of dvd players over the years mainly cheap ones,So decided to splash out a bit, well £120 ,but ime glad i did this is far the best dvd player ive had which can play everything plus multi region and built in 5.1 channel decoder.
will highly reccomend this player from richer sounds .
also an added bonus if u pay an extra £10 u get a 3 year warranty instead of 1 and after that 3 years if u don,t use the warranty u get the tenner back.
ho and i don,t work for them by the way.

(Review on DVD57 purchased from Richer Sounds, England).
A very cheap player, nothing stands out as being of a quality build but then at this price what do you expect!
My first unit developed a problem playing any discs for any length of time, then I started to smell a strong odor of burnt electronic components when I opened the drawer mechanism.
Richer Sounds replaced the unit immediately which was great, but I can not play MP3 discs on my replacement unit.
The one thing I really dislike about this unit concerns the two-channel output stage, when you play an audio disc the output stage defaults to maximum output which basically creates a huge amount of distortion and will ruin any loudspeaker drivers over time.
I have to admit that times have been quite rough for me over the previous couple of years and I have had to sell all of my previous audio and home theatre systems and replace with units from the budget end of the market. Maybe I am being too critical at this price level, but I am not impressed with the Cambridge Audio unit and will be looking to get a refund to buy the Pioneer DV-565A-S I think.

Enabling SVCD and VCD requires a remote hack. (see http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdhacks.php?select=Cambridge+Audio+DVD55)

Note that audio for Mini-DVD, SVCD and VCD cuts out every few seconds when routed through the coax connection to my Marantz amp, so I have to use an
analog connection for those disks (which doesn't
have the same problem).

Did lots of testing with other machines with a scratched rental disk (Toshiba 330e, Pioneer 360s, Fusion 811, Cyberhome 505) and this did better than all except the Fusion, which didn't notice the problem at all -- unfortunately the Fusion had poor colours (blacks weren't black!) and felt cheap.

I felt the CA 55 had better sound than the Pioneer (didn't test the others for sound)

Another Pioneer (not the 360) also had no problem, but was twice the price! (I paid GBP 150)

Now, if only there was a macrovision hack!

This is a review on the DVD57 model which is the same as the dvd55 but has DVD-audio plus the dac is 24bit/192kHz compared to the 55 model that is 24bit/96kHz also all the connectors on the back are gold plated. The drive system comes from AsaTech who produce drive systems for the likes of Toshiba,Philips and Sony. The case is a Sampo design.Inside they use Crystal CS3460 chipstet,OP2001Ge pink triangle and a EvaTec chip on a version 3.2 board. Overal the machine is good the audio side is outstanding with pinpoint accurate sound field. The video is crisp and clear.I have tried many types of VCD/SVCDs commercial and home burnt ones with and without chapters and all work. Tried DVD rips onto CDrs onto DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs and again I have not found any problems.CDRW/ CDR audio/ MP3s/ Jpeg/ Kodak Photo discs and MPEG-Iso CD Mode worked a treat with very fast response times :)). The only problem I have come accros is on some of the Kodak Photo discs it got finiky but I think it might be down to the condition of the discs not the player. The downside is make sure you get the latest version 3 machine with the small slim remote as the earlier models do not play VCD/SVCDs and have a few other teething problems which have been reported around. the new design remote that is like the 53 model does not work correctly as they are dispaching a patch on a disc for it to work right, so make sure you get the nice slim one as it works a lot better and all the buttons glow in the dark cool:)). I am very pleased with my purchase and I am glad that I persevered with it after getting an ealy model that had some problems but RicherSounds was more than willing and helpful to sort things out for me and since getting the latest version (v3) model I can now say that I can recommend this machine as a good buy.

Comments:
Bouught this player from Richer Sounds purely on recomendation from a mate for £150.00. Traded in my Toshiba 210E as I was pissed with vcd snyc probs etc.
So far I have tested vcds ripped from DVD's at different bitrates and it plays them flawlessly, other vcd's work fine too that have borrowed from other friends with no problem playing at all. DVD-R work fine. Will try others out and keep u posted. Cool remote control with stacks of features. Progressive scan capable, mp3(long filenames) +folders, jpeg viewer also. So far can't find fault with it. Highly recommend it to anyone. Sound is clear also.
