Frys is selling this for $89. What interested me is the fact that it has lan and plays divx hd and wmvhd plus it has usb. Anyhow, I do a lot of video editing in Liquid and have been looking for a great way to play my HD videos. Anyhow, I have a philips 642 which has worked great for divx play back and dvd play back, but now I can play all of my media files right from the lan at their true resolutions. I have this player hooked up my 47" Viszio LCD HD TV via component video and I tell you it produces a superb picture. This player support upconversion, 720P and 1080i. The usb2 port supports external drives and memory cards as well. I have been reading up on the newer philips and my sister just bought the 5860 or what ever which produces superb pictures as well but the Buffalo supports long filename via dvd, lan and usb and high resolution videos.

This player is okay. Too bad it doesn't support OGM, RMVB, and GMC or Qpel (i'm not sure about quicktime (.mov)). For the remote, it is okay after I upgraded. However, after I updated the new firmware, one of the avi file is no longer supported on the new version 07xxxxx something. I don't know what is wrong with it, but i'm guessing that they replaced the bug for the remote to that codec. OH yes, the subtitle on Hardrive(USB) is very nice. It's suck that I have to wait a minute or two then the movie can be view. First, I thought the Hardrive(USB) doesn't work for subtitle, Then I waited like 2 minutes depend on how big movies are, suddently it works!. Is there a way to fix this problem? If there is, please share it with us or me.

I have just read the reviews.
As regards pluging a hard drive formated to fat32, i used norton partition magic8 and formated a 250gb into 2x100gb fat32 and 1x50gb ntfs for back ups..housed in an icybox unit.
Have about 50gb+ content on first partion.

I think it was a seegate drive if intrested!

Reading the reviews i gathered you cant use a drive larger than 30gb formated using fat32.
well it plugs in usb and gets reckonised and its works a treat.

overall i am impressed with this bulky grey box.just wished it was a dvdrecorder too!!!

not supported medias
(video)
-GMC&Qpel(from fews avi) are not supported, but the sound works great.
-WMV7 or under doesn't supported.
-RMVB doesn't supported.
-OGM doesn't supported.

I wish this player support these codecs. I will it a 10 if they do :).
-I have a question for all of you guyz. Does this player's USB work well on a external hardrive? I meant, doesn't it slow down when you are watching the movie? If you have any ideas about this, plz reply to my email khazang@yahoo.com; I want to have a storage of movies in my external hardrive. No, I do not have a external hardrive yet. But i'm planning to buy once I know about the fact.

I use this player for HD 720p (1280x720 pixel) material, in Divx encoding or WMV-HD. I encode at 6Mbit/sec. This rate plays superbly well, no stutter etc, from the wired network connection to a 3GHz PC. The wireless plays with some stutter, at this bit rate (lower rates over wireless are ok). 8Mbit, or greater, over wired has some stutter.
Using a DVD disc, I can get as high as 20Mbit encoded without stutter, however there is a startup delay.

A firmware update, downloaded by player's menu update, over the network, resulted in better stability of the remote control. Note the firmware update is NOT on buffalotech website, only via player menu download! I think I did this about Sept 2005. This Sept update did not appear to affect playback. Up to that point, many remote control functions did not respond well, and sometimes hung the player, and this update improved that, although it is still a bit erratic.

Buffalo Tech support was able to answer non-technical questions.
Definitely an early adopter player, regarding my HD usage.

So far, so good. I'm using the player to play VOB files, WMV, AVI and DivX - no troubles so far! I've got it on Ethernet, so it's got a fast, reliable connection to the PC that's storing the content.

There was complaint from one reviewer about the FAT32 filesystem limitations - max filesize and partition size on the onboard USB are limited. This is because the onboard USB is really just intended for reading jpegs from your camera's flash card reader and mp3s from a memory stick. For mass storage, connect a USB 2.0 or Firewire huge drive to a PC on your network. Heck, that's most conveniant anyway for DVD ripping and file downloading anyway!

I really dig the player.

Update on my earlier report - still like the player. Works well streaming video and audio over wireless - freezes with MPEG2 video (too high a bitrate for my network to cope, I am guessing).

Have asked Buffalo if there will be an upgrade to DivX 6.0 codec and to the new DivX Media Format (a DivX container that will allow menus, subs, multiple audio streams i.e. DVD functionality). If you are in the market for a DivX player, suggest you hold off until this is being offered as an upgrade.

XVID plays, even HD, BUT GMC is not supported. Unable to get any subs to work (over network, not tried off CD).

WMV work, and HD, but not DRM.

Can play .dat files, and .vob files directly off PC, but not .iso files (like ISO of DVD). Daemon Tool will help of course.

No DVI, but has JPN D4 connector (digital) as well as component. 1080i progressive is great.

5.1 from DVD and xvid out works fine.

No PAL output available, but will convert PAL DVD to NTSC. (However, poorly/jerky but acceptable).

Media software for network play for all OS.

Region hack: Push [Slow] 2 9 4 0 then pick region 0.

Great player, good output. Skipping into movies (including divx/xvid) with the %-age is a great way to navigate resumed films.

Annoyances: Opening DVD tray when playing over network will stop your video.
%-age skip steps 1% at a time, no hold down-repeat.

Comments:

The machine is doing OK if you want to be an user that only needs to hit a PLAY button but nothing else.

I got many problems with this player. Below is the list that I remembered.

1. USC2/Unicode filename is not supported
2. The external USB port only supports FAT file system, which the partition has to be smaller than 30G
3. And it only supports 2 partitions. I have a 100G hard drive. I have to partition it into 3 FAT file systems because the player does not support NTFS. Well, sorry, no access to the last one.
4. There is no way to do time search. I am unable to jump to somewhat like 12'30". The only way to go there is by using a fast forward. It supports a fast jump by percentage, but it is same useless.
5. Firmware is very buggy.
a.The whole machine easily gets crashed or garble audio if you do fast forward/backward on WMV/MP4 files
b. It occurs very often that once you do fast forward/backward, you are unable to do it again. The play gives no response with the remote. You have to pause the playing then you can do your next fast forward/backward request then the machine becomes no reponse again.
c. Sometimes, if I hit fast backward, it was still doing fast forward.
d. It is even buggy on playing the regular DVD movies. It occurred occasionally that skip chapters can cause the audio garble. The subtitle key is forbidden forever whatever the feature is really forbidden or not set by the movie. I can only rely on the authoring DVD setup menu to turn it on.
e. 50% chance the machine gets crashed if I want to use a jump-by-percentage on a file from the remote median stream server.

I doubt they know nothing about those bugs. I reported those bugs back to Buffalo twice. They never responded me. The firmware can be updated over the WLAN, sort of. But they never released the new firmware to fix those bugs. From Feb to June, the firmware only got updated once, but it did nothing for those bugs. (That was for the DRM feature.)

Not recommended!

Needed second networked HD player - returned this one for following reasons:

Wireless didn't support WPA (unacceptable for a network company like buffalo).
Firmware seemed to be the November or December version from Sigma (IODATA has updated 5 times since then) with no new firmware available.
Wouldn't play TS/TP (ATSC HD) that my IODATA could.
Price $100 more than IODATA with less functionality/more bugs.

Comments:
Got tired of converting XVid/Divx to DVD and SVCD to watch on my earlier JVC DVD player. Saw some good reviews of this and purchased it. So far, very impressed. Plays everything I throw at it.

What was really fantastic was the ability to wirelessly stream movies, pictures, music, on demand, from my PC. It sets up a streaming media server on your PC and once you point it to the directories that hold your content, you can easily pull up those folders, select the files to play on the TV and watch it. Upconverts to HD (except DVD Video disks due to DVD consortium limitation - any hacks for this?).

Video streaming freezes occassionally and I think this is due to wireless network issues rather than the player - don't get great coverage from where my router is to my the player is - plan to move the router or install an external antenna.

Has a D4 output but have not tested it. But anything else on CD or DVD, whether compiled into (S)VCD/DVD formats or raw video files (DivX or xVid), plays fine.

Still playing with it but like it so far.
