CVD? $1000 7 days 9 of 10 Comments: I've had this system for just over a week now. The quality of the unit is excellent. The quality of the audio & video is excellent. (I use s-video jacks for the video) Note: You must use s-video jacks for both the input to the Bose & the output to the TV. You cannot mix & match the cords. (I tried. It doesn't work) Although it does have Digital video jacks, none of my other equipment supports it, so I have yet to try it. My only complaints about the system are the same as everyone elses: Does not play SVCD format It plays all my region 1 (US) DVDs with excellent quality. It also plays VCD format great too. I expected the audio to be louder. When I reached the Volume: 100 limit, I thought it would be louder than it was, but the quality was still beautiful even though it was maxed out. I have a region free DVD that it seems to choke on (freezes, locks up, etc.), but I have a newer model that will not allow the firmware upgrade or region code changes. (Says 1 on the bottom - that means it's locked up). Although on the yahoo groups page, there are hacks for it, after spending $1000 for the unit, I am in no hurry to go messing with it. All in all, I am very pleased with the unit. I would recommend it to anyone who wants high quality sound from a space saver of a system. (Unit only has 3 speakers: 2 speakers & a subwoofer or AccousticMass as Bose refers to it)

See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bose321/ for the ;latest updates on this status. The firmware upgrade CD files are alos located there, but hopefully we will not need them. If Bose does release the VCD/SVCD support soon then no need to patch it. Have fun! And thanks to everyone for the great info on this site.

CVD? $900 N/A 8 of 10 DVD-RAM Comments: As for DVD-R support. Here is a tip. If you have an older player, with the M1502 Toshiba drive mechanism you might have troubles. I am running 010310 and the Panasonic created DVD-R will hang or pause after 5 minutes! However Sony (RDR-GX7) DVD-R will work GREAT! I think the Panasonic left the factory too soon! They should have worked on the QUALITY a bit. Anyway, there are 3 drive mechs in use by the 321 M1502, M1612 and M1702. The M1502 (according to Toshiba specs) does not support DVD-R. However all the M1612 and later 321 unit with the latest firmware will probably work just fine :)

No problems noted either way on Bose system.

CVD $900 N/A 9 of 10 MPEGISO Comments: I experienced that Pinnacle burned mpeg videos on TDK DVD-R, and Optimum CD-R's play on the BOSE 1-2-3 BUT quality looks terrible as pixels can be seen. SVCD's do not work-and are considered "bad disk" as displayed by BOSE. AVI's burned on DVD-R produce good quality pictures and video and play well with no problems. I also found that putting CD stomper-labels on a home video DVD makes the movie freeze but the label works fine with DVD-X Copy DVD's.

N/A No rating Comments: My update cd says software rev.01.03.08 drive firmware 1b10 & 1b32 jn30492 Sorry about not posting the update,it's in small print on the front outside edge of the cd and I did not see it and also did not know were it was located until I took a second close look at the cd. I have tried a second disc today 8-17-03 recorded on Panasonic DMR-E20 and it also worked great so I would say again that this update fixed the problem with dvd-r discs , maybe just for panasonic recorders, I can't speak for all recorders standalone or otherwise.

The hacks area has the method used to display the firmware level, mayeb you can post back? Or if you got an update CD it will say the firmware update level on the CD label. It sure would be helpful for others to know what level has the DVD-R support. Thanks!

N/A No rating Comments: This is just an update from my 1-15-03 post below: I just received my bose 321 update cd on 5-23-03 and I tried the same dvd-r that I had problems playing and now it works great. when I called bose they said it was an update for new formats but when I asked if this was and update for dvd-r support they did not know. Since there was no problems in playing the dvd-r,the support must have been in this update

CVD? $1000 N/A 10 of 10 Comments: I received my system about a week ago. Setup was extremely easy, as it was advertised to be. The sound quality is suberb for a system which has three speakers. I have tested it with Memorex, Imation, and Hi-Val CD-Rs and CD-RWs. It plays both the traditional CD format and the MP3 CD format I burned using iTunes 3 and Toast 5 Titanium. I have used the Apple branded, Memorex, and Khypermedia (some really cheap discs at Office Max) DVD-R and all play flawlessly. I burned the DVD-R on my Pioneer Superdrive equipped iMac using iDVD and Toast 5 Titanium. It also plays a movie I burned to a Memorex DVD-RW. The R.E.M. Automatic for the People DVD-Audio disc plays flawlessly as well.

CVD? $900 N/A 7 of 10 Comments: Aweome sounding system. Easy set up. Would have given it 9 except the buggy software. (It almost feels like alpha version to me as far as quality of software is involved) DVD-R media tested: Memorex/Verbatim/Samsung Be-All. All works like champ... the problem is... It is very sensitive to what application you write the disc using as well as criteria. I found DVDxCopy to be the best bet. I've had archive of backups I tried (which works fine in Sony DAV-C770/ Toshiba SD-3800) and all of them failed ! The originals worked fine in the other hand. So I created a backups using DVDxCopy and it works like a champ in Bose 3-2-1 (previous method was IfoEdit with nero burn or DVDSplit... the ones that was done with DVD Decryptor had no problem). As far as media is concerned I ran out of el cheapo media (will get some today and test more) Gotta test -RW side of story tonight too.

N/A 5 of 10 Comments: I just purchased my Bose 321 1-15-03 everything worked great and it played dvd-r's but only 30 sec to a minute at a time and then would pause and replay about 30 seconds later for another 30 seconds to one minute. Tech suport was really good and told me because there was no dvd recordable standard that they did not set it up to play dvd-r discs. I told them it was very important that it play dvd-r's and he said he would pass this along. no problem with vcd's , mp3's or dvd's . EVERY USER OF THIS SYSTEM PLEASE CALL TECH SUPPORT AND TELL THEM YOU WOULD LIKE IT TO SUPPORT DVD-R'S . They told me the more that call about the dvd-r support the better. Any questions or comments or tips please e-mail me. p.s. I did tell them about timer speed up on mp3's and they said it was at what bit rate they are recorded . p.s.s. The dvd-r's were recorded on a Panasonic DMR-E20

I tried a basic VCD that I've been playing in my Magnavox and wa la! It worked! I have not tested any other formats (SVCD, etc.)

I love the sound.

Not tested in region1 (yet). We have confirmations (on the forum) that it plays VCD/SVCD and DVD-R. Hvae fun folks! All in all I've been happy with performance and convenience if the system. Easy setup and can be moved readily. Not too happy with Bose support though! They STILL blow me off and say that VCD is not supported (in region1 of course!) Regards, JoeB

I am interested in getting a copy of Johns's upgrade CD that was shipped with his unit. Maybe it can be "tweaked" a bit. The Bose does play MPEG1 audio from VCD I have tried to play. So it does recognize SOME acpects of the VCD. If you hit the settings button while playing a VCD you will get the VIDEO! In perfect clarity! It is THAT close to working! I cannot believe Bose will not upgrade the firware. But they never advertised it to support VCD or SVCD so I really cannot complain. I John is out there....please email me so I can get a copy of your upgrade CD. There are some Yahoo groups like OneFirwareForAll that might be able to help with the VCD/SVCD support, etc. Thanks folks for all the great information on this site!

N/A No rating Comments: Before I tested the discs at the Bose store, I had sent an email to Bose asking if the discs were compatible with the 3-2-1 system. Some days after I ran the test, I received a reply that said the unit was not designed for compatibility, but might play the discs.

I tested the discs on a 3-2-1 system at a Bose store in Manchester, VT. They both played perfectly.
