| Stay away from this player. I bought at FutureShop just over a year ago, and all of a sudden it will not read any discs. When I put the disc in, I hear weird random high pitched (but quiet) noises from inside the player, along with the usual spinning/searching sound. After awhile I get a 'No Disc' reading. It just feels and looks cheap, and the remote is poorly designed. |

First I was all high about this cheap player. I hacked it to multiregion without problems. It plays pal/NTSC interchangeble without special tv, BUT...
It quit working pretty fast. First it had "timeouts" every so often in the middle of a movie. It turned itself completely off and would only start after I opened the case (Or did it just cool down in that time?) After several weeks with this problem it finally never came back to life. Aspire Digital never answered to any of my emails for support. Since I live in Bermuda warrenty was no option for me (Shuipping costs to high) |

Awsome player as a best bang for the buck, no doubt about that...only until I got a HDTV.
I have many foreign DVDs so it was a great choice. Got SOOOO excited to have a HDTV and hooked it up with componet calbes, changed its settings to progressive scan. Yes it has one and shows that it is send progressive scan. Picture looks much better than interlace setting. However, I noticed that darker tone shows smudged and pixelated spots. Watched Eyes Wide Shut. A lot of dark suit, drapes, and so on. Thought it was the TV(Phillips-not so high end) at first time. Almost I returned it after going through different setting adjustment. All failed. Then maybe its the DVD disc itself. Played some other ones 007 World Is Not Enough- first bank scens, Bond's dark suit looked bad, Fabulous Baker Boys-Michelled black suit looked bad, Matrix-Ann Moss's Cat Suit also looked bad. Oh, maybe its the DVD player.
I bought $80 Sony player DVP nvs501p from Costco. All those disc shows nice texture of all dark & black suit and scenes. Very disappointed. What does this mean? I have to find a player with regin free set, progressive scan feature, and additionally Divx play function. Avayon, RiTech? Would their progressive scan output meet HDTV quality? I will find that out. |

I used hack suggested above. It worked fine.I needed to change my TV settings from AUTO/MULTI to NTSC to play my PAL VCD on my NTSC TV. Heads up here for those who are not that techy , do not set TV settings to PAL in accordance to your PAL VCD if you have NTSC TV otherwise display will continuously keep scrolling & only way out is to set the DVD to factory default. To do that follow :
1.Press eject & keep the tray out.
2.Press Setup
3.Press RIGHT Arrow 3 times.
4.Press down Arrow 8 times.
5.Press enter folloowed by Return.
DVD is now reset & your display will come back to normal.

I had purchased the Malata 500? and hated it due to pauses and limited function.
So I went back to Future Shop and bought an Aspire AD-900. Unbelievable! It has played every single thing that I've thrown at it. I even took test DVDs and an SVCD to FS with me to test on other "name brand" units. Only the Aspire played everything AND had the clearest output.
The menu options are out of this world! I've not seen any other brand with such a robust menu. You can adjust this unit to work with any type of TV/Monitor and audio system. Awesome!
The ONLY downside was with 1 new DVD that I purchased. I forget the title right now. But what happens with that DVD, while it plays perfectly, the Close Captioning keeps being displayed even though it's turned off in the menu options. I don't see any other DVD doing that, but then, I haven't done full tests as yet.
Still, not a big problem. Obviously not. I liked the unit so much that I bought a 2nd unit.
Love it! |

I just bought this player and all I can say is wow! :D
It was on clearance at Future Shop for $50 CAD and I thought why not.
It got an integrated 5.1 decoder (not very useful unless you have a 6ch. discrete amplifier), component, composite, S-VIDEO video output, coaxial and optical audio output, use the MediaTek MT1379 chip, progressive scan of course, a superb UI, playeverything, do proper NTSC->PAL scaling, seem highly forgiving of scratchs and not so greatly burn DVD±R(W), got a gorgeous output (can't say that much about my others cheap players), is a full rack width so it look expensive :) but quite slim.
I didn't go through a full inspection yet, but something caught my attention: on the lower left of the front panel there is a kind of plastic door, you can't remove it without forcing, but I'm pretty sure behind it there's the same karaoke PCB of the AD-1100 and all is missing are the two mic jack, after all those two players are the same.
Advices for the technologically challenged: lift the lower panel on the remote for more functions, remove the transparent protector on the display for better IR coverage and RTFM.
Anyway, great bargain 8) |

What a great player!!
So far its played everything i've thrown at it. About 95% of my dvd's are burned with DVD Decrypter, while most of my cd's are burned with VCDEasy and Nero.
The menu features are better then most higher end models, and the look of the player is very classy.
The only thing keeping this from a perfect 10, is the weirdness experienced with other model's remotes. Most of my TV remote functions do something to the DVD Player. However, the remote to my Panasonic Receiver does not affect the player at all, go figure. |

Bought this at Futureshop in Canada
DVD&CD-MPEG1/2ISO works fine for me (burned with Nero 6.0.0.28 IsoLevel2,Joliet,Mode1 on Ritek DVD-Rs on an LG4040B drive). Being able to play MPEG files with no authoring is a great feature; all of my archived music videos burned on DVD-R can just be played directly - even .vob files will play in this manner.
Plays PAL DVD discs and PAL MPEGs perfectly on NTSC television
The fast forward and rewind are smooth with up to 32Xspeed. Slow motion reverse does not work with S/VCDs or MPEGISO, only authored DVDs.
The audio equalizer presets and DSP sound environments are a nice feature.
When playing some MP3s (especially low bitrate and large files) the time remaining displays incorrectly.
Displays long file names but they are still cut off at around 14 characters.
Region free works fine.
It has a flip down compartment on the remote to access various buttons. This plastic flip cover seems like it might break off after a lot of use. Also, the unit is not very responsive to the remote - you must directly aim the remote at the unit. Another Small problem for me is that the line-out button of my Toshiba VCD conflicts with the mute button of the dvd player (same signal I guess).
Aside from minor complaints about the remote this is a fantastic player - the only thing missing is DIVX-Avi playback. |

Has a lot of features under the configuration menu when compared to the older generation DVD players. Menu is friendly and easy to configure. Can sharpen video feed from low, med, high, there's a super bass boost, regular bass boost or trebble boost, equalizers with predefined settings (ie- rock, pop, classical, etc.) Gamma correction, contrast, brightness can all be done on the DVD Player instead of messing with your TV and setting it back for regular sitcoms.
Only drawback is the remote is funky to use and the buttons are really tiny and hard to press if you have big hands. Also the DVD Player is a little noisy but it plays some of the scratched DVDs that my old Panasonic DVD RV-30 has reading.
Finally, the player can play DVDs with messed up IFO or BUP files. |

Played everything that I threw at it. The region free code worked great. Changed it to region 0 and it worked great. No problem playing PAL or NTSC. The PAL DVD was region 2 and the NTSC was region 1. Compatible with 110-240 VAC.
This DVD player is a bit bulky, but it works great. |

I bought this at Future Shop (with a 3 year protection plan). After plugging everything in and moving the large screen TV back in place (phew) I find that the disc loading tray will not open! Not only that—Future Shop's 24-365 customer support tells me they're not responsible until the manufacturer's warranty expires in a year! Gee, I guess the salesman lied to me......I bought their 3 year protection plan expressly to avoid the time and expense wasted dealing with the manufacturer. Now I may very well have to spend more money just shipping this piece of crap back to Aspire than I spent on the player.
Avoid Aspire at all costs! And don't buy anything from Future Shop! |

Build Quality of the player itself isn't the best but it is good enough (button on front don't really line up well with the holes on casing).
Remote Control layout could be better for easier use. Also,,, proably just my TV but signal is being confused with my TV remote. I pressed MUTE on my TV remote and DVD player would change its fastforward speed and channel up would cause it to goto menu.
This is Bad!
As for the DVD media,,,
worked with my Princo 4x DVD-R, worked with Memorex 4X DVD+R, worked with Memorex 4X DVD+R burnt as DVD-ROM. |

For the price I paid this is a wicked dvd player. I picked it up a few days ago at Futureshop during one of their boxing day sales. I've had the AMW v99 and the Malata DVP-500P before this one and each had flaws with either video or audio but this player, so far, hasn't had any of the issues I had with the others.
I have tried a couple of MP3 discs (up to 192kbps on the discs I tried) and it played them flawlessly, allowing me to play a song and then go search through other files and folders on the cd while still playing the mp3 which the AMW did not. I also tried some pressed music cds which played with no trouble at all, the LCD panel on the front makes it nice because you don't need to have your tv on to play a cd with it, it gives you track number and time right on the player.
I have played several dvd movies and they have all played well with the exception of Freaky Friday; there were two points in the movie where the dvd player paused the playback for just a moment. I didn't think much of it the first time because my JVC dvd player usualy does this towards the middle of the movie as well, when it did it a second time I was a little concerned but it didn't do it again for the rest of that movie. I think it was just that dvd; however, I'll be doing some more tests and I'll report any future problems I may have.
Lastly I just tested a VCD in it, which I had burnt years ago, and it played the VCD very well. I had to set the video mode on the player to NTSC instead of Auto because at first it attempted to play the VCD in PAL mode but it was simple fix and it worked perfect afterwords. |

Hey Everyone,
Got this player today along with the AMW V-99 both $49.99cdn at Futureshop, this one is $74.99 before $25MIR.
This is great compared to the AMW. Remote flips down and has more buttons. Very nice interface for MPEG files and music. Does not play WMA though.
Has a really nice LCD so it works great as a cd player.
Great picture quality, no problems with VCDs and even MPEG-1s not but burned as VCDs, even played tv show MPEGs I downloaded years ago with no problems.
It has DTS, 5.1, svideo, component and composite outputs, really nice player for good price.
It played my DVD+RWs (mitsumi) with no problems.
I'll post more as I know it.
Definately recommend this one. |
