Got this 1100S as a replace for an AD-900 that died under warantee. Aspire support was good. I paid to ship bad one to them, they paid to ship new one to me.

Now the problem. Its a piece of crap. I have some poorly recorded DVD's that the AD-900 played 100% that this player won't play. On top of that, the video quality is very poor compared to the AD-900. (My display is a Sony projector with 122" screen).

I also have a cheap 'Inca' player that I bought a Zellers for $20.00. This player is a clone of the 1100S. Same menus, same discs it won't play, same poor picture, and same bug where you have to press a button on the remote to get rid of subtitles. I even opened both of them up and they are almost identicle inside.

Anyway, I just purchased a Yamakawa 238 and seems to be the same as my old AD-900. Same menus, plays ALL discs, and same excellent picture. I purchased 4 of them so I'll have spares if one goes bad!

Will never buy any kind of Aspire again!!!

1. Remote sometimes work, sometimes won't!
2. When you press 'open', the slot will open then close immediately and automatically. (amazing!!!)
3. The player will sometimes freeze with error.

At last, do remind every one of us to print out the invoice for RMA issue all the time (especially if you purchase from buy.com). Buy.com won't save your history invoices for more than few months (how ridiculous!). I haven't do it for myself so that I'm screwed now.

!! HEADS UP !! NEW MODEL AD1100S !!

These comments relate to the Aspire AD1100s (The 's' stands for 'slim'). This is a new player that has just been released by Aspire in the US (Oct 2004). It replaces the AD1100.

The AD1100 used the popular Mediatek 1369 chipset. Not this puppy. The AD1100s uses the SPHE8200A chipset from, relative newcomer, Sunplus (Chinese).

All previously reported hacks for the AD1100 will not work on the AD1100s - do not even try.

The AD1100 has a different menuing system but has all the same outputs (RCA component video, 5.1 Optical and Digital coax for audio, etc) and as far as I can tell it plays all the same media types as the AD1100 with an added bonus: I could not get DVD-/+RW to play on the AD1100. But, guess what boys and girls - re-writeables do play on the AD1100s. Joy!

The Mp3 playback is little different too - and IMO the interface for mp3 playback is better/easier than the Mediatek powered AD1100. Although it still does not read long filenames and/or ID3 tags - it does list by folder (the AD1100 did not). It does (just as the AD1100 did) play back raw mp3 files from a DVD disc. This is a feature often overlooked by others. Essentially, you can throw in a DVD with 4.37 gigs of mp3's ready to play - that's the equivalent of a fully loaded iPod mini. Connect this player to your amp/reciever via optical digital and you've eliminated an analog conversion step for a pure digital music experience. Try doing that with your ipod!

For the cost of a moderate dinner out for two you get a multi system (110v/220v & Pal <-> NTSC conversion) player that plays pretty much anything you can throw at it - except for DIVX - <sigh>. Great bang for buck, and it looks good too. Two thumbs up.

Oh, and the region hack? My mandarin sucks, but I was able to figure out the remote-key-hack on a chinese web site that referenced the Sunplus chipset). Try this (it worked for me):

1) open the tray door
2) using the remote, press 9 7 3 5 (you should then see a hidden menu)
3) Choose the region 0 for region free

Then it's all you can eat.

I took this player with me to India. I have no problems playing DVD's and MP3 cd's ...soon i realised that the DVD player is not region free ..so i contacted Aspire Digital and they sent me a Free DVD region free disc which makes the player region-free.
Now my major problem is I cant play DivX movies here. I see in the player specifications tht it cannot play such movies. Despite this, if
anyone knows of a hack on playing divx/xvid movies (basically DVD rips) on this player, then pls let me know.

Thanks
Mitesh Vasa.

same as the people post on may 28th. I have this DVD player last Dec and works very well for 5 month. But now no video can not come out. I have suspected that might be the problem of the connection of TV and DVD. But since other people have same problem, I should contact the aspire too. Too disppointed to have it now:(

Bought the first 1100 last december from Buy.com.

Worked for 4 months, then no video. Sent it back to Aspire, and they sent me a new one.

The new one out of the box was defective. No audio and the remote did not work.

They sent me another and it does play my DVD, music CD and MP3 but not my VCD or SVCDs.

Very disappointed, would not recommend.

I just fixed the audio problem. for anybody having the same problem, you might want to try this. I forgot about what exactly I did. Basically, it was about "setup". I went to the setup screen and selected "audio". I changed it to "stereo". The audio works now. I guess it was the change to "stereo" that mattered.

it is completely dispointing. After seeing the good reviews about it, I bought it on buy.com and returned the Apex 2600 from Amazon. It first dispointed me when it showed "no disc" with two of my DVD's the Apex and the DVD drive in my computer played with absolutely no problem. Then, a fatal problem came up. The audio didn't work with some DVD's. The background music is always OK but you won't hear the conversation. With one of my DVD's, it works when I keep the the director's comments on, but not otherwise. I was completely pissed. Has anybody experienced the same problem?

What a disappointment--- after reading the reviews here went and bought this unit from Buy.com for $49 and $29 after rebate. I opened it and hooked it up. Worked great on my DVD+R and was 40 minutes into watching a movie and it froze. Could not get it to recognize another disc. Always get no-disc message on front console. Had a smell from inside unit so looks like this thing fried! Needless to say will be returning this unit. Also the instruction manual must have been written by a first year english student--- very poor and should be a category in this site for this as well as all the technical critique.

Seems to play everything that I throw at it VCD,SVCD,CVD,XSVCD,XVCD,DVD. On high bitrate material the player produces a superb picture, but at low bitrates it has studdering and blocky picture problems.

With XSVCD or VCD the picture is very jagged on any diagonal lines in the picture and if bitrates go below 1000 kbit/s studdering of the picture occurs. In these conditions the players picture does not compare to my old APEX.

So in the end I am torn on this player, it plays everything but not the best picture on some of the taxing low bitrate material.

This player cannot play most of my VCD 2.0 moive collections in CD-R or CD-RW. It plays original copies without any problem though. The brand I use is Imation and Memorex. However, the same type of CD-R/CD-RW with karaoke can be played without any problem.

The karaoke feature is very easy to use. Just press the audio button to change the audio channel. Much easier than my Apex 5131.

The remote has so many buttons and it is very easy to mis-press. The layout of the remote is not very intuitive either.

You can press the eject button on the remote to eject the disc while it is playing. But you must press the stop button before pressing the eject button on the player itself.

Aparently, there is no screen saver feature on this player, while my aging Apex 5131 has.

I burnt my mp3s in different folders. But I can only play one folder at a time. I can't let the player play all the folders. Some people say they can shuffle the song of the entire disc, but I don't know the trick yet.

I didn't know it had a true shuffle mode, and now I realize how retarded my mp3 cd's are with all of the mp3's in the same folder :-(

At the www.avsforum.com it is reported to play mpeg files extracted from the ReplayTV DVR. It is reported to play them even at high quality! This is rare since the bitrate can peak to higher than 15 megabits/sec and DVD spec is only 9.8 max.

I have tried it with a standard quality mpeg with commercials removed with RVTools, worked perfectly. After removing commercials an hour of standard quality easily fits on a CD-R

Got this player a few days ago. Very nice looking and better build quality than Apex. Played all sorts of discs I have. Only problem is that it will not recognize any of my DVD+RW discs. Previous posting by Abell indicate that it plays DVD+RW. I don't know if my unit is defective or not. Any ideas?

The best feature is that it has a REAL shuffle mode that can random play hundreds of MP3 songs burned on a DVD disc.

Just received from Buy.com today.

Highly impressed with the looks, remote and especially looking at the price ($30 after MIR).
Tested DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-R (MP3), CD-R and CD-RW, CD-RW (JPEG).
All worked flawlessly and the player is highly configurable to suit audio and video needs. MPEG Pictures can be zoomed and rotated with the remote. MP3 play allows shuffle modes. I was very much happy to see that the player played my MP3 files backed-up on a DVD-R disc, with folders.

Included in the package:
(1) DVD-Player (Silver)
(2) Remote (Silver)
(3) Instruction Manual
(4) 2-AAA batteries for remote
(5) 2 sets of RCA cables (3-3)

Hooked up very easily with my Pioneer home theater system using S-Video cable and optical digital input.

All in all...I give this player a BUY rating for anyone looking to have complete flexibility of media.

I was little hesistant at first about purchasing this player at first as I couldn't find any feedback about it.

However, after deciding to try it out, I was impressed with this DVD player. DVD Media compatiblity has been excellent so far with all formats that I've used (+/- R/RW).

Just as an FYI, here is the DVD media I've tested so far:

Fuji -R (Ritek G03) @ 2x
Maxell 2x -R (MXL)
Verbatim DataLife 2x -R (CMC)
Verbatim DataLife Plus 2x -R (MCC)
Memorex -R/W (Ritek)
Fuji 2.4x +R (Ricoh)
Philips 2.4x +R (CMC)
Verbatim Datalife 4x +R (Ricoh)
Fuji 2x +R/W (Ricoh)
Memorex 2x +R/W (Ricoh)

CD-R and RW compatiblity tested fine as well for MPEG playback and viewing JPEG's. However, I don't use VCD or SCVD, so unfortunately no info to provide there.

I bought the CDG version, which is basically the AD-1100 + 2 mics and 5 CD+G's (packaged separately). Nothing real special about the mic's, except that they have 3 pin connectors so you can detach the cord from the bottom of the mic. Otherwise they are comparable to other mics we've used in the 15.00 to 20.00 range.

As far as the 5 CD+G's in the bundle, they have 10 songs each: Tradition Christmas Songs (2 discs), Kid's Songs, Oldies and (Semi)Contemporary. Not too bad of a mix.

If you don't have any CD+G's or mics, it's a pretty good start up package.

As far as the Karaoke output, it sounded fine through my little 2.1 system after everything was dialed in. However, the echo control is a little touchy.

The good and bad about the remote.

Good: Many functions accessible. A fold open cover on the bottom allows access to these.

Bad: Very small buttons (in particular the primary ones (play / stop / pause / forward / rewind)

I don't have a high end audio system or HD to take advantage of the either the 5.1 or progressive, so I can't comment on those areas.

My needs were good media compatiblity and basic Karaoke functionality and it's been good so far in both areas. So for this, I'd definately recommend the AD-1100.

Buy.com has a great deal on the AD-1000 now
$30 after rebate. BUT I don't want it unless it can play my SVCDs. And I don't know if 1000 is same as 1100 or not. I put in a request to add AD-1000 to this list, but in the meanwhile, I'd love to see some comments on Aspire
