Comments:
I won't pretend this baby is absolutely perfect...the audio comes through tiny built-in speakers, and it definitely sounds like it! The video scanlines are noticeable, but I only use it when I'm out & can't use a standard dvd-player on a tv anyway.

More important to me is that it plays everything I want it to EXCEPT for DivX. (Take note, however, that when it comes to DVD-media, I only use Verbatim, so take that into account when you look at my report of what this will play. As far as CD-media, everything I've used works on this unit.)

Haven't had any tech problems like I've read from a small percentage of other users...only tech complaint is that the cord that goes to the cigarette lighter in the car comes loose easily (from the lighter, not from the unit), if you even want to call that a tech issue.

Comments:
I have had two different units and have had problems with both. My first unit worked fine for about a month, and then every disc would skip after about 15 minutes and then the unit would finally freeze completely. Even after turning the unit off, it still would not play. It would have to be turned off for at least 30 minutes before it would even load a disc at all. I returned it to Wal-Mart and got another one. The second did exactly the same thing the first time I used it. I took it back as well. It was a cheap unit and seemed like a good player for the price, but if you want to watch more than 15 minutes at a time, you might want to choose a different brand.

Comments:
This player was a pleasant surprise. It's cheap, plays everything I've thrown at it, plays mpegs, and has a sturdy feel to it. Not the best picture but it's decent. The scanlines are quite visible and annoying but if you take the sharpness down a level they aren't as bad. 3 hours is a very respectable battery for such a unit. Bad points are: the battery was very hard to attach, no controls on the unit except play, stop, and pause. The speakers weren't great but not that bad either.

The bottom line is if you are looking for a cheap portable DVD player this is the one to get.

Be aware, their warranty is 90 days labor only, my 5131 stop working after 4 months and when I finally got connected to the customer support phone number (1-866-427-3946 and it’s always busy), the lady told me it’s a defect on the Laser Pickup and I need to send it in and pay $40 labor to fix it.

Just to add to the other comments. Even though it doesn't mention it, it will play mpeg2 files off of an iso CDR. Will look to try other mpeg formats(except mpeg4).

Comments:
I originally wanted to purchase the Initial 9510 but WalMart was sold out, and after having a few Apex players with good track records I decided to spend the $139 USD on the PD-450. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised after giving this unit a feeding frenzy of different file formats and media
types, it appears to play everything the Initial 9510 dose plus the added bonus of WMA.

Here's the run down...

DVD Media: Memorex DVD+R and DVD+RW
Princo DVD+RW

CDR Media: Staples, IBM, Kodak, Teon, Sony

CDR-RW Media: Memorex, Verbatim

I didn't try DVD-R or DVD-RW only because I didn't have any and I'd be very surprised if the PD-450 didn't support it, so taking into consideration how well it plays everything else, I'm willing to bet it will work.

The PD-450 plays DVD-MPEGISO with un-encrypted VOB files, no authoring required. It will also play non-standard MPEG1/2 video files. I tried an MPEG1 (VCD) file at 6000Kbs and it played without a hitch along with some other crappy video clips downloaded through file sharing networks of various resolutions, bitrates and framerates. To my amazement, they all played well!

The Good: Portable - Decent build quality - Great file and media support - 5" LCD screen as opposed to the 4" on the Initial 9510 - Good picture on the LCD screen - Excellent picture using composite output and superb using S-Video - Supplied cables for nearly everything you'll need - Decent functional remote.

The Bad: Horrible manual - The battery is a pain in the ass to attach - Poor sound through the internal speakers - Crappy earbud headphones, use a better pair - And my biggest complaint...
Why oh why can't the JPEG slideshow interval between images be adjusted? It's locked at 5 seconds which is irritating. It wouldn't be so bad if there was an easy way to step through images without having to press the pause botton over and over.

Bottom Line: With only a few minor drawbacks, this is the best portable for $139 in my opinion.

Paid $130 at Wal-Mart. So far it plays everything I have thrown at it. Plays well in the car, no skipping. External battery ran non-stop for 3 hours after only one charge. Credit card size remote works well, but would have preferred to have more controls on the unit.

LIke with most Apex DVD players, this portable one plays pretty much any kind/brand of media you give it. Plays SVCD and VCD, which are most important to me. Also plays DVD-R movies.
The TFT screen is a bit funky... it appears that the scan lines are visible. It's hard to describe. But on bright images, you can see horizontal lines throughout the entire screen.
I got this from Walmart for $139 - pretty good price for a 5" portable.
