| I've had this player for about 2 years. Great for DVD playback. This is my third unit for this model and the VCR still does not work. The good situation about this is that I bought it from Sears and originally got it for $120 then return it the first time and it went down to $100. The second unit was returned and it went down to $80 and I still have a 2 yr. warranty. So i'm still waiting for Apex to come out with a newer model so I can exchange it because the VCR doesn't work! |

Bought this to play DVD's loaded with WMA songs it played all KPBS 64,128,192 that I copied to a DVD+RW.
Played all dvd and cd videos made over last 2 years.
Used the cheapest disk, all bought using zero cost rebates. Coping from the dvd to the vcr was easy and excellent picture on TV. install hookup took 10 minutes. this Apex model is a ADV-3850 |

| Had good luck with Apex W1100 DVD player, played anything. Seems this one does too, albeit at a VERY low quality. It is progressive scan, but only supports 480p, not true 1080. Video from dvd is "buzzy" and blurred, poor sharpness and sometimes wavy on my Hitachi 43"HD. Looks way better from my W1100 when using just S-video cable. The VCR side is terrible. Top portion of screen is bent to the right, and tracking doesnt solve. Tested only a few SVCD and DVDs all played. I have experienced Apex's cust service, VERY poor. Busy signals, disconnects after being on hold for 30 minutes and emails not returned. Still waiting over a year for a refund on my 51" TV, court date set. Better off keeping away from this unit and Apex all together, spend a few extra bucks on the Toshiba or build a small media PC. This player goes back to the store in the morning. |

When I saw the price of an APED ADV-3800 in Sears I couldn't resist. I have owned an APEX ad-1500 for a couple years and had great luck. So when I get hope and look on dvdrhelp.com and read some not-so glowing reports on its compayability I got nervous as I burn a lot of DVD's and SVCD's. But before I returned the player unopened I thought I would give it a try...
My comprehensive test results:
For DVD-R: The player was able to play TDK, Princo, Memorex and unknown DVD-R and an unknown brand DVD-RW. *This is in stark contrast to most comments/reviews I read. Successfully played DVD, DVD-SVCD(per sample from dvdrhelp), JPEG (has a great menu for photos with a preview window in the file system), cDVD/MiniDVD, and DVD-MPEGISO.
On the DVD+R and DVD+RW side the player has managed to play TDK, Optimum and Memorex DVD+R without issue, it also played DVD+RW MEMOREX and unknown brand with no problems. Worked fine testing: DVD, DVD-SVCD(per sample from dvdrhelp), JPEG (has a great menu for photos with a preview window in the file system), cDVD/MiniDVD, and DVD-MPEGISO
CD-R and CD-RW were found to play flawlessly also. I had no trouble playing VCD, SVCD, MP3, JPG images, MPEG-ISO, cDVD/MiniDVD, XSVCD (gets a tad twitchy after 4000kbps, by 5000kbps the vid is clipping and jumping and studdering).
Another thing I really liked was the conversion of PAL to NTSC. It was perfect and the aspect wasn't off kilter as seen with some DVD players.
All in all I am very pleased with the performance of this DVD player. It plays everything I need without incident. Despite other claims, this player seems to be consistent with other APEX products as far as compatability. A previous complaint said that a time lapse was displayed while watching MPEGISO's -this is true, but pressing the "display" button will remove the counter. I am just really surprised with some negative reviews so far with this player, I just can't replicate the problems expressed so far. Actually my one complaint is the remote is a bit small for my tastes.
DVD authoring software tested/used: Sonic myDVD, NERO (ISO levels 1 and 2) - TMPEGenc for xsvcd kbps test.
CD and DVD ISO disks burned with NERO
DVD brands tested: Optimum, TDK, Memorex, Princo, generic |

| Be aware, their warranty is 90 days labor, my player stop working after 4 months and when I finally got connected to the customer support phone number (1-866-427-3946 and it’s always busy), the lady told me it’s a defect on the Laser Pickup and I need to send it in and pay $40 labor to fix it. |

Very Sensitive as to what DVD-R media it will accept. Tried various other cheap DVD-R's without success, but found it plays consistently movies burnt on COMPUSA's DVD-R 1x 4.7GB DVDs.
*-> Not pushing COMPUSA, just reporting what works.
Converts PAL to NTSC ok.
Also found that DivX encoded files saved on DVD-R media plays ok.

To all potential buyer and existing owner of this unit:
The DVD player side is fine.
There are two problems with the VCR side with this model, the autopower off feature does not work, not a big deal. However, the VCR timer recording feature does not work either, it just records noise. Manual recording works fine. I've tried two separate unit, same problems.
Contacted APEX tech support, they are aware of the autopower off not working, but they are still researching on the timer record function. |

Played DVD made on DVD+RW with no problem.
Played MPEG-2 file from DVD+RW disk with no problem, but has timer in upper left corner when plays such a file. I have no idea how to get rid of it (this timer is not visible when regular DVD/VCD is played).
Played VCD made by my friend with no problem, but VCD that I created was kind of choppy. Don't know difference yet, althou VCD that played with no problem was written on CD-R and choppy one was written on CD-RW. But it could be that I did something wrong.
Allows to jump to specific time when disc is in DVD format. Does not allow jump form MPEG files - REW or FF only. |

WMA worked up to about 160 kbps without stuttering. Only tested MP3 up to 320kbps, it may go higher.
No SVCD/CVD subs or menu, but it was able to switch audio streams.
It converted a PAL DVD into NTSC output.
Unfortunately, the VHS only comes out the composite jack, DVD could come out the composite, svideo or component jacks. |
