So far, has played both Memorex Video DVD-R 4.7 GB 16x, and Fujifilm Data and Video DVD-R 4.7 GB 8x. Also plays JPEG on CD and CD-R's I've thrown at it. Only dislike I have with this unit is the controls on the remote are HORRIBLE. Very cheap price though and if you can get past the remote control features it's a good buy for the cost.

After light usuage (less than 10 times), at 14 months (out of warrantee) the power supply failed. I checked on line and many other users are complaining about the same problem. The Zener Diaode (ZD3) and the capacitor (C30) over heat and smoke the printed circuit board. Apex has been less than helpful/interested in this problem.

I think I might have found the problem some users are having with the Apex AD-800 not reading disks. I recently created about a dozen DVDs using an HP DVD burner on 4x DVD-R media. I always test my movies after I burn them and they looked fantastic in the Apex. The only problems I saw were issues that i could tell were from going from DIVX/XVID back out to MPEG format. After I tested the DVDS I'm very anal about creating a case for them and a label. Well I decided to sit down and watch a movie I burned with the family and it was skipping like crazy in the player and I knew I tested it earlier and it worked fine. I then realized it was the damn labels! I'm not sure if its the extra weight of the label or the thickness but once I slapped a label on the DVDs the Apex puked on them especially as you went further into the disk. I don't know enough about DVD burning to know if labels on DVD videos are generally a bad thing or if this player just didn't have the UMPH to spin the DVD with the label on it.

Got it a year ago from Circuit City, this thing plays anything, any kind of CDR and CDRW media. Also plays DVD-R made with DVDXCopy, on a Pioneer A04. The high pitch noises that everyone complains about in here are because of the crappy quality of the encoding, not because of the unit. MP3's work just as well, no matter what media are they on. I tried Hotan, TDK, FinoCD ( 800 Mb ), Verbatim and a few other, no problems. My only complain is the crappy remote, no ...fast forward ...c'mon. The "search" is useless.

This player replaced a Philips unit that would not play DVD-Rs. I've had it about a year and at first I loved it. Now though it refuses to play any DVD-RWs, (I tried several brands: Memorex, Imation, CompUSA). It used to play them all. Also it's become more and more fussy about which CD-Rs and DVD-Rs it will play. The only ones that play now are TDK 2x DVD-R. Yes I tried a laser lens cleaner and I also took it apart and verified no dust on the optics.
All I can guess is a cheap laser pickup that has slowly gotten less sensitive.
This player used to be great but degraded to almost useless in less than a year. Very disappointing. |

This system doesn't play DVD-R's (haven't tried CD-R) unless it is nearly full of data. I burned a few DVD-R's with 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, and 4GB of data and only the disks that had 3GB and 4GB of data actually played. If you flip the DVD-R over and look at the data side of the disc, if the inner "data" ring is only about 1/2 way to the outer rim of the disc then this DVD player can't seems to find the boot sector and reports a DISC MAJOR error.

Plays DVD very well; includes progressive scan which is supposedly very good deal at this price.
The remote is very user-unfriendly taking a 2 keystroke combo to fast forward or rewind. There's alot of techy stuff that displays if you press enough buttons.
The unit has SVideo out and works fine if you take the time to set the unit up to play correctly with SVideo. Alot of people claim the SVideo only displays in B/W, but there's a setting that you have to change to make it go into color mode.
Plays MP3/VCD/SVCD however there are problems with variable-bit-rate SVCDs-- when the bitrate drops low, the audio squeals and/or the picture freezes.
There was not a "standard" way to build an SVCD for playback with this unit. The only way I could get this to work was to build an SVCD bin/cue file, mount the BIN with Daemon tools, extract the .MPG file from the \MPEGAV folder, and re-burn this letting Nero re-make the SVCD. Maybe selecting CBR when building an SVCD would resolve the whole issue but it sure is alot of trouble for something that should work correctly right out of the box.
There's supposedly 2 versions of the AD-800 out there, one with a single flash and one with a dual flash chipset. There's a firmware upgrade which works for the single flash chipset and info on all this at http://www.nerd-out.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20148
...however if you do have the single chip flash and do the firmware upgrade the remote will no longer work.
This machine did not really care whether media was CD-R or CD-RW on anything I have put into it to this point. I do not have access to the DVDR/DVDRW stuff so I can't vouch for any of it.
Another thing that mildly annoyed me was the lack of a random shuffle for playing .MP3 files. Also, the unit crashed if I tried to play an MP3 file with a variable bitrate.
Overall I think there are better units out there and I'll be looking for one. But if you are looking for a low-priced DVD player that has progressive scan for a good price maybe this is all you'll need.

I have successfully burnt and viewed DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW using the lasted version of Nero. The only catch was that they had to be burnt using the DVD-Video mode not Data mode (my Koss will play either). I got the player at Sams Club for $78 so you can't beat that for a progressive scan unit; providing you are able to accept a few quirks like the scan forward and reverse issue with the remote and the fact that the DVD drawer doesn't extent all the way out causing you to have to insert the DVD at a slight angle. But all in all, I am very pleased with this unit!

mainly about some of the other posts. most people are complaining about the beeping while playing svcds. i believe it is a problem with the error correction. i turned it off and made a few svcd's and they only beep once at the very beginning (add a 2 sec black screen), probably due to it not being a fully compliant svcd (no error correction). but it is very finicky about the video settings. i've pretty much got it to vork for every svcd i moke now.

Good player. supports alot of things such as CVD and 48000khz audio for dvd compatibility later. Although, when you play svcd's or xvcd's with low bitrates it skips, stops, or creates audio de-sync, but I raised the minimum video bitrate on movies I make now to 300 and they play fine. Another bad thing is the remote sucks.

Just wanted to let everyone know (that hasn't seen it already) that the SVCD and VBR MP3 problems of this unit can be fixed...sort of. If you have a single flash chip unit and not one of the earlier AD-800's with dual chips you can use the Hiteker BI-810 firmware update on your machine. This fixes the problem of the player stalling and squeaking on low bitrate SVCDs. It mends the same issue for some CBR MP3s. This new firmware also makes the player region free. The only flaw however will be that your remote will no longer work. You can substitute for it though, using the codes from the second link on a programmable universal remote.

well most of the time. it is *VERY* finicky about SVCDs

other noises that dont play through the computer.
Just recently (less than 6 months of ownership) the

A Friend of mine got this one at sams club and when we tried to playback a VCD after some 7-8 minutes we were able to hear the sound and a single frame every 1 or 2 seconds or so. I took the same VCD file and cut it down to 5 min files. Works great! It might work with svcd to. Just an idea....

Plays DVDs created through MyDVD or a straight rip and burn with Nero 5.5.8.0, using Verbatim DataGuard Plus DVD+RW or HP DVD+RW media.
Also plays VCDs on Imation CD-RW.
Gets an 8 because of no hack and the Remote is worthless. Need a key combo for FF and REW. What's that about? That and there are about 100 buttons on it that do nothing useful. Don't have my PhD in Theoretical Mathematics so I can't make heads or tails of the remote.
Picture quality is decent (progressive scan) for the price $119 at Sam's Club + $4.99 for an additional year AFTER the manufacturer's warranty runs out. |

Been using Verbatims, burned on a TDK VeloCD 24/10/40. VCD's work beautiful...SVCD's are a bit of a prob, especially when burning right fron the bin/cue (jumpy, high pitch audio squeals and lock ups- this could be just about anything, but I seem to not have a problem if I demux-remux in TMPEGenc, after extracting the BIN with VCDGear. I was thinking about exchanging for the 5131, I still have a few days left...all in all, I paid 119 @ sams club, seems like a better machine than the WalMart 1100...plus its Progressive Scan, which is great if you watch commercial DVD's(excellent quality picture from DVD's)

I got this to play cd's I burnt.I am working on burning vcd's and svcd's.Am experimenting with various setings but I would really like to go with svcd's. My vcd's are ok but quality is so-so. I have been trying to make svcd's but if the picture quality is good then the sound is choppy or vica-versa. I don't have a dvd burner so I cannot attest to how those work. Also the remote should have typical ff and rewind controls. Over all I like it though.

This player works great with DVD-R's burned using my Pioneer DVR-A03 burner. But there is definately (as I have read below) a problem with SVCD, and I suspect that the problem is the bitrate setting of the video, since when i run a SVCD it will run, jerky, and slows down until it just freezes. This is not true for all SVCD 's though, as some work just fine. I have quite a collection of different videos made at different rates (as I did alot of experimenting) to throw at it, and the 2 glitches I have found are enough to cause me to contemplate taking the machine back to Sam's Club, and exchange it for the APEX AD-5131. I still LOVE the output of the video though. It is AWESOME when used with commercial DVD's. I noticed the difference between the Apex AD-600a immediately! One other problem is that it can be real quirky with the DTS settings. Insert a disk that is DTS, set the disk to recognize DTS, but the player doesn't recognize that setting (my Kenwood Tuner/Amp will tell me when a DTS disk is present, and it doesn't show up sometimes). My APEX AD-600a player has no problems recognizing the DTS when present, and the tuner will respond. Maybe Apex will come out with a firmware upgrade to resolve these problems, and I hope so since I really like the player otherwise. I think it is still worth the $129.00 I paid for it.

This is the 2nd report I've left here. I've just tried a few DVD-R movies burned on a Pioneer A03 burner using Pioneer 4.7 gig media and the player DID NOT recognize the DVD-R. I have not tried other branded media or played with the bitrate while burning. It's a good player overall especially for VCD or SVCD's, but if you want to do DVD-R's you might want to look elsewhere.

The APex AD800 is a model dvd player for the serious hacker to enjoy and because it can play almost all media format's that are in demand in the U.S. price wise the best buy for the begineer in the dvd rip game!
alot of people complain about this and that but they havent did there homework either.
as for the high pitch noise the ad800 makes really comes from how the Media was made and some software can be the blame example: most people dont know to quit any background program from running while ripping and writing a cd these noises most of the time are from dvd rom drives in excess of 4x will add noise to most rips when data is being writen to the harddrive also some dvd's are dual layer which can affect any player out there even my 2500.00 pioneer dvd recorder a standalone not the cheap pc shit thats out I deal in professional video services for Musicians in houston but i have the dvda03 also fore my pc.
just do you homework as for mp3's 128 is the lowest you should go if u do go lower u might as well record 6 hours of music on to a vhs tape that has been defluxed!
this is the best dvd player for the price that will list all info about a dvd
****TIP****
BEFORE ripping a dvd place the dvd in the APex Ad800 a look at the info about the dvd this can help save you alot of time when ripping because you dont have to guess about anything you'll know if it's ac3/dd/dual layer/ etc.
write down the important info u need and rip that baby!
if u have any ? CONTACT captainvtckb@aol.com
also some 2=hr movies can be put on 80 min cd-r but u didnt do ur homework if u dont know!
