| This DVD player has been pretty good for me. I am having difficulty finding DVD-R media that will consistantly play well. The only media has been the 10-pack of DVD-R TDK in slim cases. Everyone worked perfectly. |

Very nice little player. The no power button on remote is not THAT big of annoyance people. Don't be so lazy. Anyways, I have gotten my Memorex DVD+R's to work.
JUST BURN YOUR DVD+Rs AT 2X AND YOU SHOULD BE FINE.
SVCD and VCD play flawlessly on the player. I haven't tried any MP3 CDs, but I imagine they would be fine except for the "no shuffle" thing. An all around good player, plays a lot of media. |

| After scrolling through 100 comments, I found that only a few people have noted that, contrary to the manufacturer's claims, the 703 does NOT allow you to shuffle the files on mp3's. Considering that most would prefer NOT to have to listern to 100+ songs in the same order every time, this is a MAJOR consideration for anyone considering purchasing this player. |

I've owned the Apex AD-703 for a couple of years. Just started burning my own DVD+R's and they do just fine in this player. I've had good luck with both TDK and Maxell blank DVD+R media. These DVD+R's were made by using Pinnacle Studio 8 to edit and compress the raw DV-AVI files from my camcorder into DVD compatible MPEG2 files (6 Mbps, Constant Bit Rate, 720 x 480, MPEG Layer-2 16 bit audio @ 48 kHz sample rate & 224 bps data rate). I used Sonic's MyDVD Deluxe (Ver 5.0) for the DVD authoring & burning process with an OptoRite DD0203 DVD±RW burner. I've burned over 100 of the TDK flavor DVD+R's and they all work great in this player.
The "No power button" on the remote issue has been reiterated many times and is a little annoying. Although this player will play MP3's, the menu structure is very weak and long filenames are truncated to 8 characters. However, the AD-703 was one of the earlier players to support MP3 at a reasonable price.
Overall, a good little DVD player.

Have burned multiple princo 1x -r disks that work. I have burned ONE (1) That's 4x +r disk that works in this unit great.
I have had some issue's with authoring dvd's that cause this unit to lock up, but work correctly in other player's... |

The TDK DVD+R works fine under this player. The extra work that I did was change the compatibility bit setting of the DVD disk and the DVD+R(W) writer to DVD-ROM. More details for this process are here:
http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/bitsettings.html
BTW, I use the NEC ND-1100A DVD+RW writer under WinXP pro.
This is one good DVD player. I have it for 2 years already and have no problem with it. You should clean the lens regularly, and it will be fine. |

A few comments on things other people have said. Bitrates of anything burned to CD-R/W media must be below 5000 Kbps. The drive can't spin burnable media fast enough for higher bit rates. I recommend using 4700 to be safe.
DVD+R definitely works, BUT this player is really fussy about brands. TDK won't work at all. Verbatim is OK. Fuji is OK too. I have not tried other brands. Verbatim DVD-R also works, but I have not tried other DVD-R brands. Trying to play a TDK DVD+R disc really freaked the player out and it demanded I put in a password because I had supposedly violated parental access. Funny thing is that I set my player at Adult level access, which means play anything without a password. I also turned off the password request, yet the player still demanded I enter a password. After entering my password, the player tried to play the disc, but quickly stopped. I burned my DVD+Rs without the DVD-ROM compatibility setting, so that is not necessary. I have not tried this with the TDK DVD+R discs to see if helps. It was not necessary with the Fuji or Verbatim DVD+R discs I used, so I doubt it would help. |

| Great little multi-disc player, but could use more features. Plays DVD-R just fine, but balks and refuses to recognize any other types of DVD. Plays CD-R & -RW fine. Frustatingly does not support MP3 filenames longer than 8 characters, and will sometimes use a very strange sort routine (1, 2, 3, 8, 6, 7, 4, 5, 9, etc). Will not play MPG/DIVX files burned onto disc in any mode. Occasionally will not play S/VCD discs when burned in same way (power-cycle may help). |

It played the HP and Rima +R media on which I had recorded home videos using Pinnacle Studio 8.
But, it failed to play the HP and Maxell +RW media though the same plays on my PC DVD drive. I used the bitsetting utility from HP as well as the one available from www.dvdplusrw.com. The same website lists this model as compatible with +RW. But, it didn't work for me so far (3 disks each of HP and Maxell). |

| When you pause the playback for more than 10 sec (or so), you sometimes have to turn the power off on the unit to get it to reset. I don't know what the deal is, but it is really annoying. This happens about 3 out of 4 times that I hit pause. I like how you can shut off macrovision though. |

| I love this nutty little gem. I bought this thing over a year and a half ago. At the time I had only mp3 discs burned, not even any dvd's to speak of. It was a shock of instant bliss. I had dumped thoes to disc originally to get space on an old hard drive. They all work great at multiple bitrates. All my VCD's and SVCD's work fine. If your having issues with your video playing smoothly, its most likely an authoring issue or you put a hack on it, but more often the previous. I myself have never tested a commercial VCD or SVCD in it, so I may not know my apples from oranges. The menus on the SVCD's are lovely. The S-Video thru my Philips flat screen is crisp. A bit to crisp for me, but my tv has various preset video modes and can either warm or cool any picture to suit. I myself would like to be able to find a remote code that works to run everything seemlessly but that hasn't happened yet. Yah the lack of power button is poor but I could stand to stand every once in a while. The area of DVD authoring isn't within my grasp yet, but maybe I'll le you know about that when it happens...ok |

Had this player for quite awhile now, had some free time on my hands so I decided to send in a few comments...
The 703 has one of the worst MPEG2 decoders I've ever seen - Hell, you'd be ten times better off with a software MPEG2 decoder, like PowerDVD. The decoder chip has problems on wether to edge more towards green than red (i.e. parts of faces will have greenish spots, while other parts will look normal). It's extremely annoying, especially in low-light scenes with faces (the forhead and other darker-lit areas are greener than the cheeks and nose, which stay true to their color).
The 703 also has problems displaying solid colors, like pure reds, pure greens, and pure blues. Even though the YUV for MPEG is subsampled at like 4:1:1 (or whatever), the decoder makes it look a LOT worse. It's even worse when it tries to display gradient shades of primary colors (e.g. dark blue skies, one can easily see macroblocks and terrible blending).
Another problem is the laser, which is easily ticked off by small pieces of dirt on discs, and refuses to read anything until it gets cleaned, which is impossible to do manually because it's enclosed. So all you have to do basically is wait it out (spinning discs sometimes blows off dirt, or you can use a laser cleaner thingy).
Picture sharpness and gamma is fine and dandy.
The last problem is the worst one: When playing fullscreen video (no letterboxing), the entire screen will "jitter" up and down VERY fast, the ENTIRE picture, and will make you thow up if you look at it too long. HOWEVER, this only happens when the image gets too bright. This really pissed me off when I was watching some of the Twighlight Zone episodes on DVD, which are fullscreen. As soon as like someone would walk outside and there would be a lot of sky in the shot, SHAKY SHAKY SHAKY! There's no way to fix this, you have to wait until the frame darkens up.
One last thing, if the DVD's bitrate is too high or is badly compiled, the player will severely choke (it makes weird noises). One can fix this by pressing 'Stop' one time (giving a blue screen), and pressing 'Play' to resume.
4 out of 10 because, even with all these flaws, it still plays movies! Heheheh... |

I have had the ad-703 for over a year now. It was the first dvd player I had owned and i had no dvds at the time. I got it for all the stuff it supported and was pleasantly suprised that all my mp3s vcds on different medias played great!
I bought Matrix dvd(great movie)to give it the first test on dvds. Played great with no problems. Thought I had a keeper that could do it all! Well after playing more dvd movies(all new btw)I noticed freeze ups(ugh)
Well the honeymoon was over as it began to freeze up on about all my movies and on gladiator it locked up completely and I even noticed a scratch on the dvd when I took it out.
In the meantime it was playing all my stuff I made off my computer flawlessly so I kept it and went out and bought a sony to play my dvds and it plays beautifully.
So in conclusion, my unit doesnt seem to like dvds but everything else runs great(btw i use nero and tmpgEnc) |

| I have two of these players as mentioned below in a previous post (one BT and the other CS chip). I have removed the hacked firmware from both players due to DVD (commercial) and SVCD (burned with dvd2svcd) playback problems (hacks were those linked to from this site). All of the frame freeze problems disappeared when the factory firmware was re-installed. With the factory firmware at least, this player DOES NOT PLAY ANY DVD-RW discs that I have tried. This includes Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD-RW's version 1.1. I have made well over a dozen dvd-r discs that play fine on the player. If I use the same method (Spruceup + Nero 5.5.8.2) to author/burn the dvd-rw the disc does not work. Don't be misled by the previous post that says dvd-rw works! If indeed anyone has gotten dvd-rw's to work, PLEASE post how including firmware on player and software (method) used for authoring and burning. By the way, more than one version of firmware hack exists for this player (try a google search) (Note: Price listed is over a year old. These now run for about $75 if you can find one) |

| This thing DOES READ DVD-RW DISCS!!!!! I used a Verbatim DVD-RW copy of a DVD Video and it plays everything flawlessly. Great discovery since I thought it wouldn't read DVD-RW (most of the reviews on this unit say the unit WON'T read DVD-RW). Great unit since it seems to play just about everything I threw at it. Haven't tried DVD+RW/DVD+R but who cares about that anyways. |

This Player is great. It plays my DVDs, MP3s and VCDs fine, but I can't get it to play SVCDs.
It recoginizes the cd-r as a vcd 1.1 but then won't play. Maybe I'm burning them wrong. Any suggestions? |

I found a posting on another forum about this player's DVD+R compatibility. Didn't test it myself. The other post (from "Satcomranger") said he used HP DVD+R media.
He also said DVD+RW failed in both mode 1 and mode 2. Full link to the other posting:
