| I got this player as a birthday gift in January of 2001. It still runs great and I have thrown a lot its way over the years (VCD, SVCD, MP3). However, I did recently learn that there are certain media that do not play nice with the 660, and that media is the Windata 8x blank dvds from Micro Center. They play fine on my pc, but I get a NO DISC error in the Apex. I typically use Imation 8x and Verbatim blank dvds with no problem (their media id is RICOH, the Windata's is YUDEN). Just thought I'd drop a line and give the heads up to other Apex users looking to buy cheap dvd media. |

I really like this player but as I have now switched over to burning DVDs I have run into a few problems. Mine only plays DVD-Rs. And even then it has trouble with some
DVD+Rs do not work at all. Chapters skip randomly as well as random "DISC ERROR" messages.
DVD-R from Fuji with PRODISC dye work perfectly. However not all DVD-Rs will. I recently tried Maxell Dvd-R with RitekG04 type dye and they acted like they were a DVD+R with the chapters skipping and just a few minutes later it crashes and goes to the Apex logo saying "DISC ERROR".
I will just try to work around this and only use Fuji as much as I can and if it gets worse I will buy a DVD-Rom drive to perhaps switch it with to make it more compatible. I see no need to buy a new unit when this one works so well besides this minor problem. |

My APEX AD-660 machine is still working after 3+ years of frequent use, which deserves extra credit!
I experimented with computer files of different formats and sources, burned onto VCD and SVCD on CD-RW media, and these have all played OK. Using imation CD-RW discs rated 1x-4x, and they are silver color. Someone mentioned problems with some CD media on the APEX AD-660; these are still available, at least at Target, red and gray packaging, bar code UPC # 0 51122 40955 4, with 10 skinny jewel cases in shrink wrap. 100% success with getting these to play in the AD-660, so far.
Next project is to capture my Beta format tape collection, with content that can't be replaced, and try burning those onto VCD or SVCD, while my Beta VCR is still working. (I'm not just joking.) Will report on how this works, and how they play on the APEX.
Software for the VCD and SVCD experiments:
VCDEasy v3.0.2 Commercial (paid for license)
Hardware:
MATSHITA UJDA720, "original issue" on Gateway 1450 Laptop, reads DVD's, reads/writes CD's

Plays most anything but SVCDs built to the 2500kbps "standard". A/V mis-sync'd in this case. My Pioneer player has no problem with these discs.
Solution: The Apex likes XSVCDs encoded at a slightly lower rate. I've used 1950kbps for the video and 192 (instead of 224) for the audio. No sync problem. Add'l benefit: Sometimes 2 cd's can be used for a movie rather than 3.
I'll be replacing this unit with another inexpensive player soon and will verify that the new unit -will- play the "standard" SVCD. |

| I have been fairly happy with the player, except for having to turn off subtitles every time I play a DVD disc. I'm writing to share that my player won't play certain original DVDs. After watching an hour and a half of The Stunt Man (THX Widescreen) the screen locks up and the player starts skipping chapters until it returns to the main Menu. In addition it won;'t play the middle third of my original Smashing Pumpkins video DVD. It will access the menus but freezes on the videos. It also stopped playing after an hour on Manhunter (the original 1986 dvd, not the recently rereleased version)I though maybe the player had overheated, but if I try again on some other day the same thing happens. I've tried to access by chapter or time directly, or skip forward to start playing where it stops to no avail. The only link between these DVDs appears to be that some of them are dual layer, Anyone else experience this? I'm shopping for a new unit, any recommendations? I like unknown brands like Apex because they brought the price of players way down and historically shamed the big brands with features like mp3 capability. |

| I've had this player for a while, and so far it hasn't failed me. I've used it successfully with homemade SVCD's from divx content and captures from a video camera. I've made nice slideshows with music using WinonCd, and I've made dvd backups, using the DVD+R nec nd1100a from NEC. They play nicely, and I used NERO to burn them, all I did was uncheck joliet, and relax iso restrictions, and I also checked Xbox compatibility mode. This is a great player for the price! The only thing kind of wrong with it is the hokey, MP3 interface. |

| Great, it played my DVD-RW Princo disc. Burned a movie via Pinnacle instant copy played great and burned some mpeg2 files (a 30 min cartoon and 5 min home movie) from my sonicblue replaytv (downloaded to my pc using DVarchive) onto the same princo disc (after I erased the movie) via sonic MYDVD software that came with my cendyne ao5 dvd burner and those files played great too. I have the 9mm hack on the apex which released macrovision when I copy movies to my vcr. |

| Primarily concerned w DVD+R and DVD+RW. Using my Verbatim (NEC-based) burner - bitsettings not changeable, as far as I know, until somebody writes the software - neither format would work. The discs I burned tested and played fine in my other DVD player. |

I've had nothing but success out of this DVD player. I make quite a few VCDs / SVCDs for use in it. I've taken the VCDs to many other people and tested them on their players and simply couldn't make them work.
When I put them in my Apex, they work just fine.
My only complaint is the lack of component output.

I’ve had this player for over 2 years now, and I must admit; it’s still one of the better players I’ve come across. It plays just about every DVD-R, CD-R and CD-RW format/configuration I through at it. And with the player firmware region hack, the player just keeps getting better.
The player’s extremely simply design is probably the reason why it’s so compatible. Currently, the player cannot play DVD-RW, DVD+R/+RW formats. But with a screwdriver and a new computer DVD-Rom drive, you can reconfigure it to play any type media. The swapping part is no more complex than swapping the DVD-Rom drive out of a computer.
Pros:
By default, plays the most common media types.
Physical DVD-Rom drive can be exchanged with another more compatible one.
Cons:
Does not play DVD-RW (at least my model).
Burner used: Pioneer DVR-104
Software: Nero 5.5.10.0
Media Type: DVD-R cheapest one’s out there. Pioneer DVD-RW (DVS-RW47B/U)

there has been discussion about this player working with DVD-r disk. I think I may be able to clear up the confusion. Apex used basically a IDE-DVD drive this this player. They also used 3 or 4 different IDE-DVD drives. So some will play them and others will not.
I tested my DVD-r in my system and it will not work, I then did some reading at the DVD-hack site and they showed the insides and explained that they used the IDE-DVD drive. So I opened my system and looked. My system was a IDE-DVD like the sites said, but was just the optics and mechanics. No case over the drive.
I them took my DVD drive from my computer that will read DVD-r and DVD-RW. I disconnected the cables and put them to my computers DVD drive. I was then able to play my DVD-r test disk. I them just to make sure it wasn't a fluck, reconnected the old drive and tested it again. The old drive would not read the DVD-r.
So I unscrewed the old DVD drive and replaced it with my computer DVD drive. The screw holes did not match, so I hot glued it into place. Even the drive door fit on my new DVD drive. So from the outside it looks the same. One final not, you need to put a jumper on the DVD drive to master.
Best of luck to you DVD hacks. |

Around the 2nd or 3rd revision is when I purchased my Apex AD 660 so the price at that time was around $130 in US dollars purchased from Crap City, I mean Circuit City.
This player has played everything I've thrown at it. I'm sure a lot of people know that VCD, XVCD, SVCD, XVCD play with no problems. So it should come as no surprise that CVD's [basically an XSVCD] play brilliantly in this player with switchable CVD subtitles, I have yet to get SVCD subs to work but probably at the time I used the simple VCDImager and not VCDXBuild that comes bundled with DVD2SVCD. I've had at most 3 different subtitles on several movies and other than the fact that my version 8-AM plays with subs defaulted to on, this player had no problems with the DVD -> CVD rips with selectable subtitles that I have made. Even had 4 movies with incorrect GOP structures that were maxed at 15 frames which is the PAL limit [yuck PAL!] and they played with no problems, and of course realizing the error in this have since gone to 18 for the Max GOP structure for NTSC standard.
One major problem with this player is the speed up/slow down of video/audio on XVCD's, could never figure out why XVCD's play perfectly on PC and my other players such as Panasonics and Pioneer but the Apex just would not go an entire movie without losing sync at some point, the player would then speed up the video to sync up the video with the audio but sometimes it was too frequent. And never in the same spot, you could rewind the same spot and there was no gaurantee that it would speed up/slow down, sometimes it happened other times played in sync, but usually around that area. Another gripe about this player is that a DVD that is heavily loaded with subtitles this player will sometimes leave subs on even if you turn them off, recent case Simpsons Season 2 can't turn off subs to save it's life.
Player would get a 10 but if it wasn't for that fact that I spent most of my P2 400mhz days encoding hundred odd XVCDs and can't enjoy them on this player then minus one for that point. But it plays all my SVCDs and my growing CVD collection [only 36 but growing at a rate of 2 per week either by DVD-RIP or Digi-Cable cap.
Mp3 capability would be a plus but since I am already flooded with too many players than I care to count RIO, Classic, SlimX, RCA boombox, Archos 20gb Jukebox,....couple more can't name; this player usually is forgotten whenever I need to play mp3's, it used to be a regular when I had it connected to my THX/DTS/DD system but since banishing it to my room it's mainly for VCDs/CVDs/SVCDs. Wouldn't really call this a DVD player, it's better at playing VCDs/CVDs/SVCDs than anything else it's good for. |

| Note that the Mzx XVCD Bitrate that I've acheived without a funky jumpy picture is 2200. For the region and Macrovision, on my 660 its not possible. I have the 660-7 firmware which cant be upgraded. But if you bought a new one today it would be poosible. I use TDK Green 80 Min, works like a charm. Ive used a bunch of others that I cant remember, but they all work. Supports (s)VCD menus from Nero, as well as tracks with a skip that is <1 sec. Great player. The only negitive i can think of is that you have to use ID3v2 tags on MP3s. Also, you have to burn the disc ISO or it wont read. |

| I Love it. Had it for over a year. A couple months ago my wife couldn't play Princess Diaries. I went out on the web and the 9MM Firmware. The Princess Diaries worked great after that and it also got rid of those darn subtitles. The only problem now is that The Parent Trap stops playing with about 30 min. left. It worked before the firmware upgrade. It seems because my mother-in-law has the same model that we only have small problems with Disney Discs. She can't play the video on Snow White. Other than Disney, it works great. Have a few VCD's and they work great. Gonna start messing with SVCD's next. |

I've had this player for a while now and I'm quite happy with it.
Haven't encountered a problem yet with any dvd.
With multi language VCDs it always plays both sound channels.
SVCDs is a mixed bag, using the sample SVCD from here, it's jerky, some I make doe the same thing, but some play like a dream, I can almost swear they're a DVD :)
I was a little disapointed that it wouldn't play any DVD+RW I tested, both Modes (DVD+RW and DVD-ROM)failed, it seems to be a problem with reflectivity.
DVD+R worked without a problem using both modes.
DVD Drive used to make the discs was an HP DVD200i.
Used dvd-it PE to create a simple menu with a captured video and burned with Nero.
Now if only there was a way to fix them subtitle bugs...

I give this player (Apex-660) a lower rating because of it's annoying subtitles, it's failure to turn them off on some movies and the companies lack of interest in fixing the problems. Now on to the better stuff.
First off the player seems to be sensitive to the color disc i'm using. CD-Rs that look blue my player has a hard time recognizing. The closetr the Disc is to looking silver or gold the better luck i've had with the the NO DISC error.
Strangly enough I can burn MP3s to one of my CD-RWs (Imation CD-RW which is kind of a dark silver) and they work fine as long as EVERY song has an ID3 tag. (if one song is mising the tag, it doesn't recognize my disc) But if I burn a VCD onto the very same CD-RW I get a NO DISC error.
In all my opinion is that this player is excellent, it'll play just about anything. If you have problems, try a different disc color but don't worry too much about the brand.

| The only problem I have with this player is I can't get the sub-titles to go off on some DVD's. Does anyone else have this problem? |

DVD+RW's do not work on this, machine, HOWEVER, according to dvdplusrw.org 's site, if you own the HP DVD+rw drive, you should be able to change it so that it works; via changing a mode. I've test DVD+Rw's using these:
Sony DRU110A DVD+RW
Authored using:
DVDit PE
MyDVD 3.0
Ulead DVD Movie Factory
Nero Burning Rom
Neither of these programs have authored a working DVD for this machine, so please read on.
HP has put out a TEST program of their utitlity to download.
More info can be found at:
http://www.dvdplusrw.org/resources/bitsettings.html
Just want to pass this on so that someone who has the HP writer can try this utility and see if they can get a DVD+RW to work. Right now, it doesn't. |
