This is a report for the 600A. You MUST flash the drawer firmware to the newest available. see
http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/
You have to open it up first to see what firmware is on the sticker on the DVD Drawer. Then find the latest update and follow the geniuses intructions. I guarantee you will be happy. Also, you do not lose the secret menus.
My original firmware was LD10 and it wouldn't play any DVD other than store bought. Now it plays everything (with bitsetting). DVD-R without bitsetting - but it alsways best to do so. |

Cool.. I did the upgrade on the dvd rom firmware to the LI-18 and now my player plays dvd-r's. I am happy, cuz I thought I was going to have to buy a new player.. (in which i prolly will cuz i want one with a dvi output on it for my hdtv).. Anyway.. At least this dvd player isn't dead now that the firmware upgrade worked.
It's easy, just take out 6 screws and look at what firmware you have, then goto that nerdout page people are posting here and pick your firmware. I did the cdr upgrade and it couldn't have been any easier. Oh and btw, try to add the empty files to the cdr that you make so it will spin up.. Needs to be about 5megs worth..and don't make mp3's the empty files cuz the ad 600 will try to play those.. Just put some zips inthere or something..
anyway..that firmware does work, so don't chunk your apex just yet.. |

I killed the original drive in this player when trying to flash it.
However, after following instructions over on Nerd-Out.com I was able to replace the drive with my old Toshiba 4.8x DVD-Rom drive, and now it plays DVD-R's like there is no tomorrow. |

After reading all the comments on the AD-600-A, I haven't seen the firmware "LJ12" or any "LJ" firmwares.
My loader has F/W=LJ12
I flashed it to LJ15, and now the "Prefrences" selection in the Setup menu is unavailable.
It now is dark black, and navgation skips over it.
I haven't tried any burned movies yet
I am hoping it will now play DVD+R, RW

Check out this link. It has everything you would want to know about your Apex AD-600A:

Including whether or not your player has a "loophole menu" that will allow you to turn on/off region codes and macrovision. |

I'm running my Apex-600A with macrovision off so i don't need to buy a new TV. Well, ok, a cable adapter anyway... don't see why i should when it plugs into the VCR which plugs into the TV. This has worked fine until very recently. I was watching Fight Club, and right at track 19 it choked, and now the machine is behaving as if Macrovision was enabled. The menu still claims it's off, but the machine won't play any coded disk. Lacking the proper cable i haven't tested it plugged directly into the TV. Is this a stealth firmware update? What should I do to restore my unit to it's original function?
Or has the chip I just read I should have reheatsinked fried? |

| The CD-R firmware upade seems to have hosed the drive. I have an LI-06; tried to update it to LI-18. I burned an ISO9660 CD, followed the instructions to the letter -- including unplugging the ATAPI cable first -- and the update ran perfectly, it seemed. After putting the case back on and powering up, however, the drive won't respond at all. I think I just turned the player into garbage. |

i bought this back in 2000, when i heard about the 'additional features' the original firmware made available, but, alas, mine doesn't have the loophole menu. all and all though, it plays nearly everything i throw at it. at first it was a bit fussy about svcds, but now they play just fine. the main reason i posted was to say that the original dvd-rom firmware(LD-02) wouldn't let me play dvd-rs, but after upgrading to LD-12 it works fine. firmware avilable here:

| I have had this player for three years now and it has yet to let me down! As I read more on this site and learned to cap, rip, download, and author first VCD, then SVCD, and now DVD-r this player has stood up to whatever I have thrown at it. I have one dvd that has a little difficulty(The Abyss), and when playing PAL SVCDs the video sometimes pauses for a second or two before shooting ahead to catch up. Also the menus are not well constructed, but are not needed much. Those are the only reasons it does not get a perfect ten. One other note was that to play DVD-r I had to update the firmware on the drive, only a minor setback that illustrated its versatility. Very pleased with my $100 y2k puchase. |

FYI, I replace the drive in my Apex AD-600a and it now plays DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-ROM, VCD, XVCD, MP3, CDDA, SVCD, etc. I was going to upgrade my firmware in the original drive and damaged it in the process. I then replaced the drive temporarily with a CD-RW drive I had (following instructions in Nerdout articles).
I then went to Best Buy and bought a BUSLink model DR16. I drilled a couple of holes in the bottom of the case of the Apex to run zip ties through to hold the DVD drive down. I removed the DVD nameplate on the front of the drive, then removed the faceplate. I then slipped the drive in and tightened down the zip ties. I then opened the drawer, filed a little of bit of each side of where the DVD plate went and then installed the original Apex front plate. The machine now works great. The only difference is that the drawer is now cream colored instead of black.
I recommend replacing the drive!!

Manufacture date on my unit is 1/2000, purchased from Circuit City in 2000. Still works perfectly, now in February 2003.
My unit has the hidden loophole menu, and I've used it to disable Macrovision and to play back Japanese R2 disks.
Plays CD-R, MP3, VCD, SVCD fine. Older Nero (pre v5.5) SVCDs didn't work, but this was apparantly a Nero error, not the drive -- newer SVCDs authored in Nero work fine.
Tried a DVD-R, didn't work. Upgraded my loader firmware from LI-08 (dated December 1999) to LI-18 using instructions from http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/dvdrom_firmware/dvdrom_firmware.htm. Now reads DVD-Rs flawlessly, both 4x Ritek G04 disks and cheapo 1x Princo disks.
An excellent player, great value for the money, and lots of extra features you might not expect from a cheaper player. If this player ever dies, and I can't just replace the internal IDE drive, I'll definitely buy another Apex. |

its a great dvd player for the money, but mine is the older one with the hidden menu and it chokes on the newer multi layered dvds, like the matrix and xmen and a few others. i wasnt able to play dvdrs until i upgraded the dvd drive to Ld-12 from Ld-10, super easy to do, took me less than 10 minutes from reading the page (nerd-out.com) about it to playing the dvdrs.
i originally got this thing because of the mp3 support and it does that passibly, the sound is fine, the menus and lack of id3 tag info is frustrating but it is nice to rock the mp3s thru the stereo without a cable from the computer to the stereo.
it is definatly worth the money, and its good to keep up with all the forums out there if you have problems with your apex, my next venture is to upgrade the firmware on the whole things, it looks a little more daunting than the drive update, but we'll see, ive had it for over 3 years now so i got my money out of it if it breaks or something.....
i only give it a 5 out of 10 because it doesnt play the newer dvds, and it does lock up from time to time, but if you look at the other dvd players in its price range apex is a great brand, just not next to a pioneer or another major player in the dvd game.
so i say go get it, what have you got to lose? |

Going on 3 years since I bought this player. I've been happy with it for such a little investment. It wouldn't play dvd-r's burned with a Pioneer A05 until I updated the loader's firmware to LD12. It will not play -RWs (the loader cannot read them, you will have to do an ide cd-rom swap to play these).
Before the firmware update SVCDs would not play unless Play Back Control (PBC) was enabled when burnt, now it will only play SVCDs with PBC DISABLED. Many people have commented that using LD12 firmware have caused the loss of SVCD play back; but you can get it back if you burn the SVCD sans PBC. Just a little tip. |

| I have an original AD-600A with the loophole. Plays DVD-R fine. Will not load +R or +RW. Haven't tried -RW. |

| Updated the drive firmware from LD10 to LD12 using the CDR method. Now reads DVD-R (cheapo DVDpro) made with both Nero and ULead Movie Factory with no problem. |
