I just got this player at a pawn shop and it plays everything I throw at it so far. All my old VCDs and SVCDs and even my new DVDs that I made on DVD-R play fine.

I agree with many of the previous poster's comments.

The good: it will play just about any junk I throw at it, it was a good value (<$60 at Walmart), it's still working after a year (my brother-in-law's stop working).

The bad: it is sometimes noisy when spinning the disk, the disks have been unseated from their trays when the carusel whips around, the remote is not well laid out, the remote only works when directly pointed at the infrared sensor.

I have loved this DVD player for two years. Enough has been said about this machine that I do not need to repeat. However, I have just tested my first DVD+R DL on it and it worked great. Media used was Verbatim 2.4x 8.5GB.

I have had this for awhile now. I had noticed a few problems from dvd-r I made with my pc and panasonic dmr-hs2. Seemed to be media related. Just recently, I made a disk with DVD shrink 3.2.0.15. I tried playing it and within 10 minutes, it pauses and stutters. I took it to my pc and it played back perfectly. I then put it in the panasonic and it also worked flawlessly. I don't know at this point if it's the players age or what. It has been used for awhile now in my daughters room. We do all the operation of the unit so it's not child used/abused. I checked the back of the disc and it was clean. Apex seems to be a good value if you get a unit that works right. With dvd players so cheap now they are almost disposable. I'll probably just pick up whatever's on sale when this one goes out.

I can't get menues to work that were created in Nero 6, nor can I get chapters to work. I just get a frozen menu in the corner of my screen, anyone else get that or know a suggestion to fix it? Also I agree the remote sucks, but for $60 I can play VCD's and SVCD's I make versus my old DVD player I couldn't. It's also nice not having to convert old PAL vcds over either.

Comments:
The changer is not good on this player. It starts so suddenly that discs can be launched out of their trays and jam the mechanism. It completely destroyed an expensive DVD by jamming it above another disc that was playing and the spinning disc wore the surface right off. After that I made sure that there was only one disc at a time in the turntable and watched it with the drawer open anytime I operated it, which completely defeated the purpose of the turntable. It stopped working after about six months anyway and is now a doorstop.

Comments:
This was an amazing buy, i saw this and thought i would try it since circuit city's return policy ownz.
i wanted it because it was 3 disc adn most svcd movies are 3 cdrs

It has nice support for almost anything

I have put really old vcds in it that where put on crappy cheap media, it worked perfectly

all svcds play great cept once in every like 30 i put in it the audio/video sync seems to go away and i fix it by pressing rewind on the remote and then play real quick

ther eis not much to say, i have tested the following with it

vcds - work fine
svcd - great quality, sometimes bad audi sync
xvcd - works fine
.mp3 - supports folders but does not support long file names.... :(
.mpg/.mpeg - awsome support, put clips on a cd and plays nice
.jpg/.jpeg/kodak picture cd - works fine, zoom, slideshow..etc

i am still going to recomend this even with its downfalls, and give it a 9/10

Pros:
supports every svcd/vcd/xvcd i put in it!
Firmware hacks available!
Cheap 3 disc changer!
DTS/DOLBY OUT!
all digital outputs available!
best svcd quality i have seen

Cons:
HORRRIBLE REMOTE
Svcd audio sync problem(RARE)
If you put a disc accidently off the slot just by a little the carrisel will project it into the player
so you have to open it up and get it out(there is alot of open room inside it)
no automatic go to next disc

I bought this player at July 2003, it stops working right before Christmas. When I finally got connected to the customer support phone number (1-866-427-3946 and it’s always busy), the lady told me it’s a defect on the Laser Pickup and I need to send it in and pay $40 labor to fix it.

Comments:
I've been around with Apex since the AD600A came out in 2000. This was my replacement for my AD600A that fried (I used a wrong power cord on accident). I must say this player is very compatible even with poorly formatted homebrew DVD-Video. If you're lazy enough to just burn MPEG movie files on a disc (DVD-R's work), it'll play fine (very few off the net may come out glitchy). Aside from it's excellent compatibility, one downside of this is the remote. I tend to use the remote very often, at some point the remote seems to "malfunction." Even with the AD600 the remote died eventually, but the remote with this one acts weird. Either the batteries won't stay in place correctly, or the remote won't function unless you hit the Open/Close button first. Forget about a univeral, most don't support Apex models. Also this unit is rather large and noisy, you're probably better off with the slimmer models that are out these days. I will say one thing, I made the mistake of being 'lazy' with improperly formatted DVD Video discs. I know I won't be stuck with this ugly player forever, so how will I know the DVD's that I make for this player will work on other (even BETTER) ones? In other words, make SURE the DVD's you make actually work on other DVD players.

I just picked one up at Sams Club today (11/28/03) for $75. They were only $65 but I had to pay an extra 10% because I didnt have a card. Anyway, this player kicks ass. Its played all my vcds, svcds, and dvds flawlessly (Also plays non-compliant vcds). All the vcds and svcds play in sync with no picture breakup or anything (Which is what I was worried about the most). Picture quality is really nice. I havent tested MP3s or DVD-r/RW +R/RW.

I got one which was hackable for macrovision and region free. They had about 12 units, 4 of the 6 I looked at had the SN which is hackable. So if you are looking for one try Sams Club and check the SNs before they run out.

This Player is HIGHLY recommended.

I got this dvd player in feb or 2002. I've had it for over a year now. I aheb had NO problems with it. It plays every cd i throw at it. VCD's doesn't matter what type of disk or what speed i burn it.....they all work. Same with SVCD. This machine is a monster! For those people whop are complaining it doesn't play vcd and svcd's.....look what model it is. You probably got the new apex 5131. And id thats liike the newer apex's, they aren't allowing vcd and svcd off the start. you need to get a firmware update. And for the people who are calling these 6-moth throw-aways, your completely wrong. This player is great, its been over a year and NO problems thus far.

Got it at Walmart last week. Plays almost everything more than what I expected. Noisy but great value at such low price. It plays region 7 (china) DVDs without even the firmwire hack.
Anyone tried the firmwire hack to AP5131 (Walmart) recently?

Won't play DVDs created with Panasonic DVD recorders, such as the DMR-E80H.

No problems with the remote, but I don't sit too far away or too far off center.

GREAT value...lots of features for $60, on sale at Wal-Mart...IF you can still find one.

Plays everything I have thrown at it so far.

Put a couple of MPEGs 704x480 on a DVD
Nero 5.5.10
No multi session
ISO 1
ISO 9660
Joliet Checked
All restrictions unchecked

Menu shows them as VCD. Plays them fine, Yippe now I can have several movies on one DVD and at a good format too.

For $59 I'm going back to Walmart and getting a few extras for spare.
I had a VOB Cartoon, that was snatched off a DVD and burned on a 212meg mini disk as a SVCD, played it too.

Works with verbatim, Memorex+R/+RW and -R
Works with Maxell DVD+R no need to set the book type.

Would not work with windows WMV video files, had to try.

Nice equalizer, but it dose not work with MP3 files where it would be more usefull.

Hard to say anything bad about this player, If you transfer home-movies to DVDs, or backup dvds this is the player for you. Has several extra features that I will never use.
No more need to author a DVD just take the mpeg files captured and put them on a DVD or CD.

I'm going to modify another DVD player for DC+12 volt operation if anybody wants to know how it is done email me.

Very nice buy at WAl-MART for $59.44

This baby plays everything so far = the box itself "does not" list that it plays vcd or svcd, but rest assured, it will.

I've seen a lot of good deals on "do everything" DVD players but consider this to be the best deal yet...

The original version of this unit contained a different "chip" that allowed for a region free and macrovision hack. All the ones in my local walmart we're the later version and chances are those easy hack models dried up in late 2002.

This player is compatible with Audio CDs burned using “Yamaha Audio Master Recording Mode” recorded at 4x with a Yamaha 3200 CD burner.

Test DVD+R & DVD+RW were burned using an HP 200i DVD burner.

Most MPEG video streams used for VCD and SVCD were encoded using TMPGenc. No problem playing them. Also I have tested MPEG2 streams captured directly from my Provideo 256T and no problem so far.

I have tested VCDs encoded with the bundled Nero codec, or MPG1 generated by the Provideo 256T, but the resulting image is bad. For SVCDs the VCD header trick worked fine.

My preferred burning software is Nero but sometimes I use VCDEasy.

The good,

I really like the automatic PAL to NTSC conversion. I got a couple of Zone 2 DVDs that play excellent in TV or in tape, after recording them in my VCR. I have used DVDs with zone 0, 1, 2 and 4.

To disable Macrovision, and to enable Multi zone support, there is a firmware patch available for most of the older players. There is no patch for newer decks. Information on how upgrade the firmware can be found here: http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/AD5131/5131.htm

The analog audio quality it is not the greatest, but is good enough for VCR recordings. At one time I found audio/video synchronizations problems using analog audio mode. When using digital audio, the quality is just fine and I have never seen audio/video sync. problems. Doby digital and DTS sound as good as possible.

You cannot have analog and digital audio enabled at the same time. In digital mode, Coax and TOS link work concurrently. Another nice feature is that you have 3 video out connectors. Two RCAs one S-Video. Thank to this I’m using one RCA to connect the VCR, the other goes to the TV and the S-video goes to the Provideo 256T (capture card). Analog audio goes to the VCR. Digital audio goes to the home theater and to the PC.

The bad,

The remote control was not designed following the standard number location. Apex only had to take a look at any other remote control out there to find out that they were wrong. The buttons to change disks are located in a bad placement and the signal of the remote is too week.

The ugly,

The disks do not automatically advance to the next one after the current one playing finished. This is kind of annoying.

Finally, it is noisy. Depending on the disk, sometimes you will hear like a small helicopter is trying to get out of the case. This do not happens with every disk and usually no one hears it because the movie or the music playing is louder.

I think I got a good deal, very cost effective and tt was cheaper than to have fix my old Denon DVD player. Plus now I got a lot more features.

I’m happy with it and I hope it does not break any time soon.

Otto

When I got this player last year, I was in love with it. It's played everything I've thrown into it. Notice I'm using the past tense, because it just locked up in the middle of a movie, and despite an hour of messing around nothing I do will get it to play anything anymore.

So now that I'm off to buy a new player here's the cold hard facts. This player has a lousy changer mechanism. It frequently drops spinning the disks into the trays, resulting in a lovely scraping sound. It very slow to change disks, and to respond in general. The range of configurable options is lousy. The ergonomics of the front panel only look good from the other side of the living room. What's with all the useless buttons?!

Apex was so on the right track - they were blowing away all the big names on features. At least my Sony never scratched any of my disks, even if it couldn't play squat.
