Played everything I gave it. Had one that went out but had a spare. Cannot find them anymore. Very good player for the money unlike newer apex players that dont play vcd's or all dvd formats. the macrovision turn off fix worked great. made copy to vhs almost flawless. only reason I didn't give it a 10 is that I can't find them anymore

After months of jacking around with different software trying to get VCDs to work in my JVC XV-D701 and my Sony DVP S560D with no damn luck, I read this board and went out today searching for an APEX DVD Player. I found this at Walmart. Just hooked it up and tested all the disks I've burned over the past months... It played EVERY one of them without one single glitch. All different kinds of media too!

Tomorrow I go back to Walmart to pick up a couple more of these.

Using Nero, DVD Copy Plus and VCD Easy. Damn, I'm finally happy. Anyome want to buy a JVC or Sony?

This player rocks. I haven't had any problems with anything that I have thrown at it. Recently got a Toshiba SD-R5002 DVD-R/RW and have burned several backups without a single issue.

I have used Nero to burn most of my VCD's and SCVD's, CDR's without any kind of problems.

I used Nero to burn my DVD-R and had no problems with the Apex, tried it on a Playstation 2 with no problems, but wouldn't work in an Xbox.

Basically have had no problems. My recommendation to anyone considering them if you can still find them.

I give it a high rating because it met my needs perfectly.

The test movie, (How The Grinch Stole Christmas, region code 1), was burned to a Memorex DVD+R. All extras were removed. I used Nero Burning Rom, version 5.5.9.14 to create the DVD. When I put the disc in, the movie immediately began to play with perfect clarity and sync.

I also tested the same disc in a PlayStation 2 video game console, and although the movie played immediately on insert, the video was rather jittery. The audio was perfect, but the video would noticeably stick every few seconds, so I would not recommend using this type of media on a PS2. A regular DVD movie worked fine in the same unit.

Using A Pioneer 104, burned TDK, Verbatim & Imation DVD-R at 2X, no problem all played 100% in the Apex 500WM, on occasion the APEX takes a couple of tries to play the DVD but apart from that player is great value, plays VCD,SVCD,CDR,CDRW,MP3 no problem.

Great player from WalMart. I have made a few hundred VCDs and SVCDs and this unit has played all but one [a non-standard resolution that someone posted- not the player's fault] of them.

I have used everything from the $15/100 CD-Rs to Sony to Memorex to Fuji to Maxell to Imation to Verbatim- no problems with any media. CD-R and CD-RW both work.

MP3 playback works via a simple menu that only reads the first 16 [or something close] characters of the MP3 filename [no ID3 support]; It works, but you can run into problems if there are a lot of songs from an artit/band with a long name [like 'Information Society'] of all the titles looking the same.

I purchased this unit first, and got an AD-1100W for the roommate [they were out of this model]. I am considering an Apex AD-5131 changer.
Apex rocks!!

This player is very good.
-I want to point out that this player does not play SVCD subtitles. It only plays CVD subtitles.
-There is no optical output, but who cares if if is being used for SVCD. Same for component output.
-It has a nice lcd display.
-The OSD will show remaining time by toggling through the display button. However, it would be nice if it showed elapsed and remaining like the Apex 3201 does.
-There is no 1x zoom like what is available on the 3201, which is the only unit I have found to have that.

I bought this player just before christmas at Wal-Mart and have not had any problems with anything on it until May 2002----The dvds would load but were showing on the screen as "no disc"---then when it would play it would freeze and lock up the player-only recourse was to unplug the machine to restart it....Needless to say Wal-Mart did not want to warranty it so traded it to them when i purchased my apex ad-500w as a return. If you need to do this simply buy the apex ad-500w and keep your receipt then wait approximately one week and stick your old apex-ad-500wa in the box and return it with your manuals they will never even check the contents and if they do catch it, bitch and complain that maybe you purchased someone elses return (On working items wal-mart restocks and resells items...i know cuz i used to work there)Also make the box look retaped as if it had been opened and retaped before you return it...this will help back your story-REMEMBER IF YOU COMPLAIN LOUDLY ENOUGH WITH A RECEIPT, YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU WANT !!!!!! )peace(--<ooliO

Am very happy with this player, better than my expensive Sanyo. Has played everything I've thrown at it so far including dvd+rw's made with philips dvd writer and mydvd and vcd's made with nero.

Gets a bit out of sync occationally with home made dvd's but usually straightens it's self out quickly. Best player for the money I've seen . would highly recommend.

Have been using 'Ideal' DVD-r's (they have no brand on them, but are listed on some online shops as Ideal), also useing completely logoless DVD-rw's, no clue as to a brand, but there as cheap as they come. Both have worked great so far, have burned about 10 dvd's and all have worked. CD-r's I have tried...verbatim, memorex, and maxell...all 700mb data's, plus a verbatim cd-rw. All worked great once again. Plays mp3's fine...don't know about svcd subtitles, have had no reason to use them, but I have some svcd's with chapters that work great. Have created a fw quazi-xsvcd's, but don't remeber the actual specs for them.

Used many different Media.. all work fine.. recognizes VCD and SVCD fine. played many store Bought DVD's in it as well.. all seems fine.

Doesnt have a power button on remote though. and ugly push switch for power on unit.
makes an annoying ticking sounds every once in a while but it does not effect the movie.

Used bottom of the line ultra-generic DVD-RW with SpruceUp and Ulead DVD, burnt on a DVR-AO3. Worked great, burnt one in Spruce using 44100 audio file instead of 48000, and it still worked, but I couldn't fast-rewind!
SVCD works great burnt with the newest NERO (you can search now!)
Didn't get SVCD chapters or subtitles a try yet.
Played an svcd at 3500 kbps okay, havent tried more yet. Xvcd's worked best with VCDEASY, barely worked with Nero though.
Will add more as I test more...
