| I have had this DVD player for some time. It is an oldie but a goodie. So far it has played everythin I have thrown in it. This machine has played DVD+R/RW's that other name brands won't play. Sure it's old & bulky, but like I said, it will play nearly anything. I give this machine a 10!!! |

| This is a cheezy looking player but for the price, you can't beat the compatibility. It has trouble with some DVD+RW media, but most DVD+R media seems to work. VCD/CDR work perfect no matter what media I throw at it. The drive is noisy, and the SVHS output is poor. |

| It plays any kind of media that I have tried, of course I have never tried DVD-r nor DVD+r but I am 90% that it does. I have had it for around 2&1/2 years and y have never had trouble with it, I bought a Sharp DV-S1? to replace the Apex but it doesn't work for me, so I keep it play in mi living room. |

Let me start out by saying that when I first bought this player like 1 & 1/2 years ago, I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. It was able to play VCD, SVCD, XVCD, and all kinds of other non-standard formats. For a long while I was very happy with it. Disc media was never an issue, I used all kinds of CD-Rs and CD-RWs and they played back wonderfully.
The trouble began a few months ago when I started to rent lots of Anime DVDs. Most of the Anime I watch is in 4:3 aspect ratio, so this problem wasn't known to me till recently. Whenever I play a 16:9 Letterboxed Anime DVD on this player, I get all kinds of interlacing artifacts on the screen. This only seems to happen with Anime DVDs, none of the live-action DVDs that I played in it ever had this kind of problem. I tried playing these "troublesome" discs on a Pioneer DV-250 and they played perfectly, with no interlacing artifacts. So due to this irritating (to me, at least) annoyance, I have drastically reduced my rating for this player.

| I've had this player for almost 3 years with no complaints. I just recently bought the Sony DRU-500a DVD Burner. I Used CompUSA DVD+R Media for a dvd copy with DVDXCOPY and it plays just fine. Other than a few issues I had with fast forwarding some VCD this play works well. |

This player rocks, had it for a year and a half (first one didnt play VCD's very good, took it back a couple weeks later, the otehr been going fine)
Anyway this post is about PRINCO DVDPRO media. While the -R worked just fine, the -RW does NOT work. Makes a nasty noise, and after a while "No Disc". |

| As far as what it plays it is fine. Had some problem with cd-r music playing though. One disc would play, another would not (tdk burner,nero, verbatim discs). But I use it mainly for dvd play. Biggest disappointment is that it stopped working after about 15 months, won't read the disc. And I do not play it very often, maybe one dvd per week average. So that really makes it worse. If I constantly played it I would have felt like I got my money's worth. Maybe I just got the lemon. |

This is a great DVD player.
No problem with VCD/SVCDs in PAL or NTSC format.
DVDs and DVD-R play great.
I've had theplay for 2 years, and it's really reliable. On DVD-Rs it will sometime freeze for some long periods > 10sec.
The player does get hot and I think this explain the freezing up on cheap DVD-R brands when the disc is too hot, because it's always after 1hr into a movie.

I am fairly new to video CDs. Here is my preliminary findings: I am using a imac using OS X and burning VCDs and SVCDs with Toast Titanium.
Strange experience: I had problems playing standard VCDs on the Apex unit. The video, would only play in the upper right hand corner of the screen (no kidding). I can get around this by briefly doing a "fast scan" and it reverts to a "normal" full screen. Plus the viewing quality is below average. Lots of pixelization (little squares apparent in the video).
On the plus side: it plays standard SVCDs without a problem!!!! excellent visual quality too!!!
Plays music CDs CD-Rs and CD-RW and mp3s w/o a problem.

I have had this player for a year and a half and have had no problems with it, it works great. I just burned my first vcd and it worked on this machine.
looked great and the sound was good.
I used the cheap cd-r that cost me $.20 a piece.
I used NTI CD Maker 2000 with a sony cd-rw drive
very fast and came out good. |

This has been my only DVD player, I bought it two years ago (in 2001) at a Wall*Fart for $92 (in tax free New Hampshire).
I have a mac, and at first I made VDCs using imovie and toast. It played them all, even really cheap media (although I got better results with gold cd-rs. I have not used cd-rw media, only cd-r.
I now burn a fair number of DVD-rs using iDVD, and it works great, even with el-cheapo $1/disc no-name brand stuff. |

(This is not a repeat post...I have this player as well with the same results)This player rocks. I haven't had any problems with anything that I have thrown at it. Recently got a Toshiba SD-R5002 DVD-R/RW and have burned several backups without a single issue.

I have used Nero to burn most of my VCD's and SCVD's, CDR's without any kind of problems.
I used Nero to burn my DVD-R and had no problems with the Apex, tried it on a Playstation 2 with no problems, but wouldn't work in an Xbox.
Basically have had no problems. My recommendation to anyone considering them if you can still find them. |

| Bought it because of its universal playing of original DVDs and DVD-R and DVD+R media. It WILL NOT play DVD-R/RW. I have one of the new Sony DRU500A DVD+R/-R burners. Everything it burns will play on my Toshiba and Sony players. It plays DVD+R media fine. It has a mod chip with macrovision turned off and selectable region code. |

| I've had it about a year and it's a great commercial DVD player. I've burnt many VCD and SVCD's on cheap media and it's played them all. Only thing is I just bought a Pioneer (Cendyne) DVR104...and it will not play DVD-R's. (Same DVD-R plays ok in a Sony NS315). The unit is otherwise a 10 except for the DVD-R problems. |

| STOPPED WORKING AFTER 18 MONTHS! First off ALL cd media wouldn't read, then a month later all dvd media would not read. Otherwise this thing would play about anything you would toss in it. You can make VCDs WAAAY out of standard with really low bitrates on video or audio and this machine won't flinch. I never had the chance to throw too many SVCDs at it though. |

My Apex AD-500W works great. I bought the modification chip on the internet, and so now I have turned off Macrovision and can control the Region code setting. This has come in handy when making backup copies of DVD's onto VCR tape. I think the mod-chip cost me about $11.00. Not a bad deal. Easy to swap out. I used a chip puller/inserter.

| I don't know why the previous poster says that this player won't play his DVD+R disc(s). Perhaps, he is using very cheap DVD+R media. My AD-500W plays Verbatim DVD-R AND Verbatim DVD+R media flawlessly. Plays every CD-R VCD that I put into it, including $0.99 for a 50 spindle pack super-duper-cheapo CD-Rs. It already is natively CGMS/A digital copy protection disabled. Unfortunately, the firmware Macrovision/Region hack cannot be flashed -- it has to be chipped. However, you can get the mod chip for $15 shipped if you ask the right people for it. Darren King has an EXCELLENT site (http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/500W/500W.htm) for everything that you would possibly want to know about this EXCELLENT player. I haven't seen one available at a Wal-Mart in about a year. They can be found on eBay, though. |

| Great unit for the price. The other two reports that state the unit plays DVD+R and DVD+RW discs is not true of the several discs of that format I recorded. I have a Toshiba DVD player that played them perfectly, but this Apex would not even load them. Does handle most DVD-R/RWs though. |
