Hey Guys,
It's me again! (see rating below)
I just found out (the hard way) that this unit does not play DVD+R which are marked as PAL!
Yes, I live in PAL-Land and just wasted 4 DVD's to find out about it.
:(!
Ohhh my ....
I seriously doubt that anybody else in PAL-Land has this device ... so it's no real thread to you NTSC folks!
Cheers! |

Okay folks if any of you has this player with the
patched Apex703 firmware this is for you:
(Firmware Link --> http://shincodvd.emuunlim.com/firmware.html)
I tested the unit with my newly bought DVD-Burner (NEC13001.06)
DVD+RW = NOPE
DVD-RW = NOPE
DVD-R = NOPE
DVD+R = :) YES YES!
I used RITEC R01 DVDs!
Here's the dump ->

As for SVCD files on DVD ... No Problem Sir!
Yes, it works just fine.
Haven't tried VCD on DVD yet but it will be the same outcome!
I recommend DVD-LAB for (S)VCD on DVD!
No demultiplexing required!
If you have further questions please EMail!
Hope to have saved you some trouble ....

Was very impressed on how it played everthing I threw at it for the past 2 years. I bought it for my parents. The remote control on it has got to be one of the worst ever. Why I am writing this is that I am super pissed it doesn't play MP3's. I could have sworn it did but it won't play these latest ones I have burned.

MY APEX AD-500A plays cheep Princo(purple)DVD-R disks made with iMovie and iDVD .I used my friends External burner; Pioneer (I think). This was a home made movie
also I used DVD+R disks made by TDK (purple)Burned with DVD X COPY and my new SONY DRU-500A (+/- R and RW)
to make a 2 disk backup of one of the movies i have. It worked fine with some run-around.
Almost all disks play made with Princo dvd's on my friends Mac (75%)
So far I only made 1 backup with DVD X COPY (newest version) and it works. there is some problems with loading. It starts to make a buzzing sound when I press Play in DVD menu, and it will not play. I can fool it by skipping right to the movie by pressing next chapter button or by selectin a 2 scene and than go back to 1st scene.
I have tried DVD+RW disk (SONY) to play a home made movie burned with the piece of crap bundle program MY DVD and it failed to play.
I will try it again with DVD X COPY and post the results |

Hey people I just figured out how to play those DVD-R you thought were coasters( might work with DVD+R)
When you put your burnt copy in to APEX AD-500A
and you see LOADING message rappidly press (>>I) button
(NEXT CHAPTER FORWARD) and the player will skip right in to some chapter ahead in the movie;
simply go to begining and enjoy |

| I recently burned a DVD+R movie on my computer using the $100 DVD'X'COPY software. Everything went fine until I put the movie in my Apex AD-500A and it DID NOT work! I bought a DVD+R burner because of its' writing speed and the DVDRW Alliance said that "The DVD+RW/+R discs recorded can be played in most existing DVD-ROM drives and DVD video players" (http://www.dvdrw.com/), however, the AD-500A did not recognize the DVD+R format. I've had this Apex DVD player for a couple years now and am now thinking of giving it to my in-laws. I guess it's time to go shopping for a new player with DVD+R compatibility. |

| This is an awesome DVD player for $80 dollars. It seems to play all forms of blank cd's. I've tested with CD-R and CD-RW [at least four different types of blanks] ALL worked fine. I do have the Apex AD500a and I'm here to contradict previous comments about it's MP3 playing ability. IT PLAYS MP3's!!!!!! I've got a disc playing right now with 158 songs on it. I burned the MP3 disc using CeQuadrat's software. I'm not sure about the DVD players max bitrate for MP3's but I believe 192kbps is the largest bitrate MP3 I've burned. |

I got it for free when buying a Sony big screen, and tested it with what I had, and was very pleased. Remote finally has an eject button, so i'm happy. It even plays broken cd's or cd's with plain mpeg's of mpeg-2's on them. Only problem I have encountered would have to be no FW or REW on the Svcd's, otherwise all is well. Another minus, which doesn't effect me too much wouyld have to be that there is not mp3 capability.
I would recommend this player for your room, and the APX AD5131 in your living room. |

I have tried making VCD's and SVCD's using mostly Memorex CD-R(12x),CD-RW(4x),
HP CD-R(12x) and a few others and, I know its hard to belive, but I have'nt had any problems
playing them back other than skipped frames (Sometimes) or skipped sound (Sometimes). These problems occured when using several programs to encode the data into avi then mpeg
then mpeg-vcd (time consuming) and then using Easy CD Creator 5 to burn onto a disk. I am
now using TMPG to encode the file(s) into mpeg-vcd and burning it with Nero 5.XX onto ANY
disk available to me using a lower speed of 4X. However, the problem I am having is that I can't get the disks to play in any Sony DVD player except the 700 series which plays picture but no sound. I'm beginning to believe that it's not only how you burn it onto a disk but what
disk you use itself. By the way I HATE Easy Creator 5 for anything other than burning CDs.
They offer no support what so ever for Video CD Creator or Take Two which I found out is not made by them but by another company entirely but used by permission. |

So I bought the 500A. I have the Apex 600, so I tried every CDR I already had burnt. It plays anything I threw at it Imation,PNY,Sony and the all popular $10 spindle. This player is awesome for the money. It doesnt play mp3s , but for $100 what do you expect? This is my an XMAS present for my sister by the way !

| The 500A plays CD-Rs, the 500 without the suffix seemingly does not. Great player for $99, no reason to spend a dime more for doing VCDs or the amount of DVD movies most people watch. Digital output on the unit is by Coax only. Great player, I have yet to be able to get the unit to produce the skipping symptoms some people report, that may be a difference between the 500 and 500A though.

| I love this Unit, but it will not play "any" CDR - regardless of Gold, Silver, Blue + Stunning Picture Quality + Quality "Soft" Loading Mechanism, instead of those cheap "hard" eject so common in this price range + I paid only $99 @ Circuit City, truely the cheapest DVD player all around + Quality, Quality, Quality - Stupid Remote Control design - Do not play CDR, so I may have to return it - No MP3 - No MiniDVD - even if burn on CDRW

| This dvd player is awesome considering it only cost me $120...It easily plays all burnt VCDs and SVCDs...Apparently this DVD player is different from the AD-500 because it can play all media(CDR and CDRW)...The only difference between the AD-500A and the AD-660 is MP3 playback which is not worth an extra $40 in my mind...All SVCDs were created using TMPgenc beta 12 and burnt using Nero 5.0.

| The Apex AD-500 (not AD-500a) does NOT support CDR of all kinds. Do not get the AD-500. But according to posts by people, the Apex AD-500a DOES support CDRs. The AD-500 and AD-500a are two VERY different DVD players. Besides the fact one supports CDRs and the other doesn't, the physical player has a different look and feel to it. The 500 has a generic kind of look and feel, but the 500A looks promising.
