N/A No rating JPG/JPEG Comments: Played both DVD+R & DVD+RW when burned with Nero 6.3.0.3 burning rom / Nero recode 2 using "copy entire DVD". With this program you can still reduce the size of the menu's & extra's to help keep the resolution of the movie as high as possible. I also used DVD Decrypter before Nero. I tried DVDshrink but it wouldn't play in my Apex AD-500 player. Using Nero, the DVD+R & DVD+RW played in both of my DVD players.

CVD $100 N/A 5 of 10 DVD-RAM Comments: Was able to recognise VCD on Cd/rw discs and read DVD-R perfectly but was not able to recognize DVD+R! Is a great DVD player for regular discs especially considering this is an old player!

N/A No rating Comments: I have had this player for over a year and have had no problems with it. It plays everything that i put into except for vhs tapes. I bought it at Wal-Mart for $50 bucks and it has been worth every George. I have used everything for SVCD and VCD from Imation to TDK and haven't encountered any coasters. Thanks Apex.

N/A 8 of 10 Comments: I have been playing Fuji 700MB CD-R's on this model with no problems. Both VCD and SVCD play fine. There is a firmware update/hack that will make it Region free and Macrovision free. See: http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/500/500patch.htm I would have given it a 10, but you get what you pay for. Low price = cheap parts. For example, if I pick it up so the door is facing down, then the door will slide open!! Other then that, I like it. -gammer

CVD? $90 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: I had originally bought this DVD player with the intention of playing only DVDs :) I knew little of (x)(s)vcds...also I didn't have a burner. But fortunately when I did finally discover (x)(s)vcds...my Apex didn't let me down. I've only used cd-rs (Imation,TDK,Maxell and Memorex)not having to use cd-rws.I author my vcds on a mac so I've used Toast's encoder, M.Pack, TMPGEnc and recently started using VCDEasy to add chapters and menus. One great little feature that I discovered about this player is that if you add chapters to your VCD, you simply click on Intro(on the Apex remote control) and it'll display a menu...just like a DVD menu(doing this disables PBC though, and since I lost the manual I don't know how to get PBC back other than ejecting and re-inserting the disc). For (S)VCDS I've used resolutions of 720x480 and 48kHz sound with no problem. I've encoded (s)vcds at higher and lower Kbits/sec with no problem. The only cons about this player that I can think of....are...takes a while to load the disc, not too many options when playing mp3s(like shuffling) and it's big(but I guess thats normal, they get smaller with time). So all in all, this a great player for the price. No complaints here. PS It also plays PAL discs

CVD? $99 N/A 9 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: My AD-500 works perfectly with any CD-R I've tried. I've used Imation, Maxell, TDK, CompUSA, and many different Generic discs. I've used all those brands to make VCD's and mp3 CD's using Nero 5.5. I've also been making DVD's using TDK and Pioneer DVD-R's and they are flawless. I'm using Sonic DVDIT! for those. I have never seen a disc not work in the AD-500. I'm using a 16X TDK VeloCD recorder and a Panasonic LF-D311 DVD recorder.

CVD? $99 N/A No rating Comments: i am unsure the person who tested their dvd+rw on this standalone did so correctly. my father has this exact model.... and from checking the serial number on the back, there is no question that it is simply the 500 (no letters afterwards) and all of my DVDs made on both memorex and HP dvd+RW media play exactly as they should menus, sounds, movies, effects, and all flawlessly.

CVD? $99 N/A 8 of 10 Comments: this is my first dvd player and for the price, you can't go wrong. this isn't the best one out there but it plays dvds mp3s and vcds. no cdrs though. used nero 5 with .mpg files to make vcds. only complaint is with the subtitles. i have to turn them off manually every time.

CVD? $110 N/A 1 of 10 Comments: ...i change my vote.... seriously, in the end, this just doesn't hold up after a little less than 30 days the picture gets glitches (even on brand spankin' new dvd's) Captions are ALWAYS stuck on by default......a real piss off when a dvd has the option to change or put on cpations but not to remove them in it's menu( because any decent dvd player would...no SHOULD have them off by default!!) No way to turn them off (subtitle button lets you cycle through subtitles but not turn them off) glitches loading times are long and get longer with use of the player.....(gets worn down in less than 30 days!!!) MP3 menu (almost a lack of) sucks Not a buy, cheap but spend a little more and get something better (bought a white-westing house, runs everything i through at it and is all around better quality and cost me only 190 CDN instead of 180 CDN for the Apex ad-500......10 cdn = approx. 7 USD btw)

CVD? $99 N/A 10 of 10 Comments: The apex ad-500 doesnt play cd-r's. That is the only problem that i have encountered with this equipment. Works very well and is VERY inexpensive. I recomend this dvd player for anyone.

CVD? $99 N/A 8 of 10 Comments: ok, whats all the complaining about, true i have a hard time finding a reigon code or MVision hack for it (harder since the hacks at vcdhelp.com are down for now)....but other than that it's not that bad of a player. All Silver/blue CD-R medi i have tried works so far (80min) for VCD and Audio CD's tried those verbatimin deep blues...works fine for audio so far...... works with maxell and immation 74min CDRW's for vcd.... only problems is vcd's can look great or like crap depending on how you tweak the setup.....(menu...no actually "tweaking" to speak of...) and all of this for $150 CDN (about 100 USDollars)......not bad......course i have yet to try some things, but good for the prce (and yes this is a AD-500 i am talking about, NOT a ad-500a.....) maybe it's because mine is a later production run? bought it november of 2001.....made in china....haven't seen a screen saver to date

Imagine my disappointment as I inserted the the first vcd I have burned into the player to see "no disc".. I would not recommend this model at all.

CVD? $99 N/A 1 of 10 Comments: I own this dvd player and its a peace of garbage, no type of cdr or cdrw's worked for any media, mp3s vcd... This thing has no options, or screen saver, and when playing DVD's my audio skips frequently, on one dvd I just played it skiped the audio for 4 minutes straight. The customer support from APEX is of the worst. Iv had this dvd played for less then 3 monthes and thr audio skips on ever dvd, APEX wants me to pay 40 dollars plus shipping to have it repaired. Im ashamed to own this player, and I HIGHLY recommend you donot purchase this. I plan to get a new DVD played becuase this cant do anything correctly

CVD? $99 N/A 4 of 10 Comments: According to Apex support, the straight AD-500 does NOT play MP3s or VCDs, even though the documentation says it does and it has the VCD logo printed on the front of the unit. They also said that only the 500W would play MP3s or VCDs. Go figure!

I had one with real cheesy menus and no screen saver which did not play MP3 or some of my VCDs. My brother has what looked like the same machine from the outside, but had real nice menus and a screensaver. I bought another and got the good one this time, and it plays all my VCDs and MP3s. Price/ Performance is awesome, I really like it. Check which one you have!!!

I tried about 20 different CD-R brands and two brands of CD-RW. No luck. Took it back and got an AD-660 instead for only $20 more that plays every last thing I toss at it.

CVD? $139 N/A 1 of 10 Comments: Based on information given here, I went to my local K-Mart to purchase one of these players as a cheap cdr-vcd solution. The minimal info page at Apex listed 'cdr'. Opening the package, no mention of cdr or mp3 is found in the manuals. The suggestion in their faq was to burn with iso 9660, 8.3 format using adaptec ez cd 3.5 (I installed an old copy I had handy). This did not work. It would appear the AD-500 does *not* support cdr's. More than likely, the reports here are on one of the later versions (the 500a or 500b possibly) that may be marked similarly. CDR's tested with VCD: Princo 1-12x Non-Branded Spindled Silver/Blue CD-R 74min 650MB, spindle of 100 -- (purchased from http://americal-cdr-online.com/aco/) Kodak 8x Non-Branded Spindled Silver CD-R 74 min, spindle of 50. Imation 1-12x Branded Spindled Green CD-R 80min, spindle of 50 Sony 1-12x Model CDQ-74CN CD-R Spindled Green/Blue CD-R 74min, spindle of 50 Memorex 16x Spindled Black CD-R 80min, spindle of 50 Attempted VCD's with both Nero 5 and Adaptec EZ CD 4.03. <Br> Mp3's were attempted on the Princo and Kodaks. <Br>Back to K-Mart for this 'piece'.

CVD? $99 N/A 10 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: MINI-DVD works! It goes into the MP3 explorer, and you have to go select the video file, then sound skips. So, it does not work good, but works never the less. I burned the sample XSVCD done at 3500kbits, and it was remarkable quality, my whole house shook. Plus, this player can do most normal encoded mpeg files burned on to a cd, you play them through the mp3 explorer. Lastly, The player says right on the box that it has Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS, don't know why nobody has put this on for this player before. also, all the apex players should point to www.apexdigitalinc.com, not www.apex.com

I recommend this for anyone that doesnt want the most expensive unit around but wants good quality.

But it plays Mp3s, cd-r, cd-rw, minidvd, svcd, vcd, everything I have thrown in it.

The image freeze some times (for a second) it has trouble reading anything on cd with bitrate higher then 2000 .... and plays dvd in a mediocre way. Not worth alot.
