Everything I have put in there works flawlessly and will play disc's my Panasonic CV40 has trouble playing with ease. Reason I dropped it so many points is there is NO XVID/DIVX support, which really kills it for me... So I just bought a Philips thats supports it

Played everything I tried in it perfectly as long as the media was good and was clean. It is still going strong nearing the one year mark. The only annoying foible is that the tray seems to have a mind of it's own when deciding when to close. Many times it opens on command and then immediately closes. You have to be quick to snatch or load media. Other than that, no complaints. I understand that it may no longer be available. Too bad. I would probably buy another one.

Good player, plays most everything I've thrown at it. A few complaints, though:

1) Extremely slow disc recognition--takes forever for the disc to begin playing after load.

2) Flakey transport system. Tray will sometimes eject after closing, requiring repeated attempts to close it.

3) Slow on movie starts.

Comments:
Plays VCD/SVCD/DVDR, plays MPEGISO and DVDMPEGISO. Remote design issue that people previously had seems to have been addressed.

As always Apex is top notch, offering best quality, most compatibility for all formats at the lowest cost. Apex can just not be beat. And as always we have people that come on here and give Apex's ultra low scores for absolutely no reason. Any score below a 6 on any apex player needs to be disregarded as totally false.

Also slim design of this Apex is quite nice comapred to the bulkier older Apex models. A+

If you need a DVD player buy an Apex you will not be dissappointed in the slightest.

Bought this unit in January for $80 Cdn, found two problems so far. First, although it does play VCDs, it pauses or freezes on some of my VCDs, which played ok on my friend’s old Sanyo. Apex’s specs do not include VCD, and interestingly the FAQ page on their web site says “APEX DVD players do not support VCD”. Also it does not recognize my Verbatim 2x-4x CD-RW.

This is a great little player - played everything I threw at it pretty much without issue.

The hardware itself I'm not particularly fond of, though. The drawer doesn't turn on the unit when you power it on, and when you power it off the drawer doesn't shut on its own. And the remote blows, but what dvd player has a good one?

The most inexcusable part about this player though, which I'd otherwise give an 8 or 9, is that it skips on chapter breaks from authored content. What that means is if you create mpg-2 files from other video sources or use rebuilding/recompression methods for backing up your dvds - prepared to be severely disappointed. Video pauses for about 1/2 a second at each break, almost like a layer change. I've tried different discs with different authoring programs and have had the same results.

If you never plan on authoring your own discs and stick to things like dvdsrhink for your backups you should be ok, but it'd be better if people like Apex worked out these bugs instead of having more people buy them for the hell of it.

This Apex AD-2600 came as a $50.00 gift with the purchase of my 55" Phillips wide screen HD tv. Although it works fine it has two problems with the Phillips brand tv. First it is not compatible with the Phillips universal remote and most importantly cannot eliminate letter box when playing widescreen rental DVDs. And that was with the screen set to wide, and aff turned on. To ensure that it was the Apex player I connected my older Magnavox MDV-450 and voila! Full Screen play, but without progressive scanning. Going to plead store credit toward another player listed in Phillips tv manual.

I'm back and the JVC loses the battle to the Apex. It started skipping DVD-R's that the Apex played flawlessly. Back goes the JVC. The Apex now gets my 10 of 10 at an incredible price. Excellent player.

I picked this player up on Amazon for $50 about 2 months ago. So far it has worked flawlessly.

It played every burned DVD-R i tossed at it, and most beautifully it plays MPEG files directly off of a CDRW/DVD+RW/etc.

The sleek platinum finish and slim design complement the plethora of features, making it the best bang for the buck I've found to date.

Only one weird thing I noticed (which does not affect performance at all) is that if you do a soft poweroff with the tray open, it does not automatically close it like most players do.

Regardless, I highly recommend this player.

Picked up on this player at HH Gregg for $49. I figured it was a bargain especially with a lot of good reviews. Brought it home, hooked it up, popped in Seabiscuit and the LOAD words came up on the panel, nothing on the screen. Then, what appears to be the characters b| bL e appeared on the panel, still nothing on the screen. Then the counter leaped to 0:010:00:01, then it jumped to 0:020:03:60, still nothing on the screen. Then it stopped, with the characters b|oou E. Guess what - still nothing on the screen. The remote would not get anything on the player to work, save a VERY fast forward, which fianlly stopped the counter at 0:130:00:00. I fought with this thing for several hours before boxing it back up and going back for a refund. I guess the old saying is true...you get exactly what you pay for.

I just threw everything I could think of at this dvd player and it played all with out a hitch and with short loading times. Tried a dvd+rw pal movie because I figured it it'll get that to play on a ntsc tv than anything would work. Guess what I was right. Threw a svcd at it bewm worked. Tried a dvd-r filled with mp3s that worked too. also threw an old old cdr I had with mpeg 1 files on it. Played them flawlessly although made me remember how bad of quality mpeg 1 is :) The dvd-r I used is just a memorex 2x rated that I burned using nero. the dvd+rw was an image I'd downloaded off of the newsgroups of a pal movie. It worked just fine. haven't tried dvd+r because I didn't have any disc and haven't tried dvd-rw yet because my discs are rated at 1x and well... that's just not worth the wait. Anyone who's lookin for a nice dvd player that'll play anything you throw at it for a good price this is the way to go. Superb job apex.

I just got this player shipped today from Amazon... I put in Charlie's Angels (which only has the VIDEO_TS folder and no AUDIO_TS folder), and surprisingly enough, it worked immediately. The remote is very responsive, as well as the player itself. Not so much load time as my previous Panasonic S35.

I also popped in a DVD-R movie-only version which plays too. I made it with DVD Backup and DVD2oneX, then burned it with Toast 6 as described in the guide on this site.

In addition, it played an SVCD with menu that I made using Roxio Toast Titanium 6 as well, and with no pixelation or weird noise like my previous player (Panasonic S35 from Target).

Overall I am very happy with it but I have another DVD player on the way to compare it to (JVC XV-N40BK, which is black and supposedly identical to the JVC XV-N44SL otherwise). I was aiming to get a black player, but the Apex AD-2600 seemed justified to sacrifice that. We'll see how it compares...

I like the player overall, but one thing that I wish was there, and would probably be the cause of me returning the unit to Amazon, is no memory of the disc playback.
In most DVD players that I have used, I could just switch off the player (put it on standby) while it is playing the disc (DVD, VCD, MP3, or be it any data), and when I turn it back on, it would resume from where it left off earlier. Well, the APEX doesnt do that. Does anyone here have an idea if there's any option to be turned on or anything different to be done ?

from what i've thrown at this thing so far, i am extemely impressed. I haven't seen anybody elses player play all the cdr/w's and vcd's, svcd's, raw mpegs, mp3's! This thing does it all , and well. My Sony that claims to play everything does only what it claims, no more. It doesn't do jpegs or raw mpegs, but this Apex does. Very happy customer here. No lemon. $59.95 US dollars.

Unit looks and plays great. It certainly is worth the $49 - $10 rebate I am paying for it.

Composite out is average.
Progressive is faily good.
The remote is better than some more expensive players I am trying out.

So far I have tried a Sony, a Zenith and the $300 Samsung HD931.

Since none of those can play all the formats that this one can (esp. non authored mpg files) I have returned them all and I will keep this one.

Just received from Amazon.com where it was $50 with a $10 mail-in rebate making it $40 after rebate, with no shipping and no taxes. Ordered it 2 days ago and it's delivered tonight. Amazing. Looks great, works great, and I have had no problems with it. I also have Apex 1100, 1500 and 1010. The 1010 didn't play DVD+R's and so I wanted to replace it with this one. I also wanted to make sure this site noted that it does play DVD+R and DVD+RW disks. Great machine!

I just got this today, so here are my comments:

* Plays DVD-RW written by DVD Studio Pro!

*Seems to be a little noisy in the video image

*Audio does not start up right away when changing chapters. This breaks slideshows made with DVD Studio Pro, not sure about other authoring tools. I converted the slide show to a track, but that made 56 little chapters of non-linear files, and yes, the audio still stuttered

Just purchased this player today from Best Buy. Popped in "Hollywood Homicide" and guess what? ... it wouldn't play. Getting "NO DISC" on the display.

This player will only play a dvd movie if it first recognizes that the two folders (ie. AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS) are present. In "Hollywood Homicide" disc only the VIDEO_TS folder is available. (I ripped and burn the movie onto a dvd-r ... plays great!).

Might want to see if APEX has a firmware fix for this problem (before buying this player IMHO). I'm still keeping it!

Went to replace my dead APEX AD-1500. Bought an APEX AD-1600, even though reports here said it was noisy. Noisy is an understatement :) Did however play SVCD's that my dearly departed Electrohome and AD-1500 played. Also managed to get it to play a vcd, although, playback wasn't perfect. Could not stand the vibration/noise so I checked APEX's site and reviews here. Decided to go for the AD-2600, as I have an available colourstream input on my tv. This unit would not play either VCD or SVCD that the 1600 played. It does however play dvd-r no problem, tried 5 different ones Princo and Lead Data DVD's, and a raw mpeg on a CD-RW played just fine. Going to call APEX and ask them why one model plays SVCD and the other does not, even though they say both do on their website. http://www.apexdigitalinc.com/proddisp.asp?category=DVD%20Players

Plays all VCD and SVCD that I threw at it.

Plays CDs mixed with MP3s and MPEG1/2s. Plays non-standard MPEG resolutions as well.

Does not support MP3 long file name... only about the first 14 characters

Lemon right out of the box, ... would not read CDs unless you open/close the tray about 3 times.
Exchanged it, and works fine now.

Fully loaded, and it's only $90 Canadian.
