As with all of the others out there in DVD player land, I too have experienced the problem with the unit not wanting to turn on if it has been shut off for an hour or more. It's as if a power supply capacitor is either discharging down or decaying in its capabilities to hold a charge.
I also experience an occasional hiccup in the displaying of the video once in a while. When I reported this to Apex while it was still under waranty, they suggested that I send it to them for repairs. considering the cost of shipping it to them and any other related cost that I might incur to get it repaired and back, I choose to simply put up with its idiosyncrasys for now. |

It seemed time to buy a new dvd player and i had such great success with the ad-5131 that i went out and bought this baby. Luck helped me get from Rexs for 60.00 bucks (they didnt have the one they advertised)seems to be a great player . Wish it had a eq on the remote like the ad-5131, but all in all its played everything I need it to do like vcd,svcd,mp3s, and dvd.
I have the same problem with start up , but turning it off and back on works . |

Plays beautifully SVCD, DVD, CD audio, CD-R, and J-PEG. No complaints so far. For the price, very nice indeed. Unfortunately, had to return my 2500 because of early death (1 day), but since I don't have an HDTV this one is just as good. No optical connection, but digital coax is fine.
The only reason not 10/10 is the low-budget manual, lots of missing information. I suggest you play with the remote when you get it!

| This is my first DVD player and I'm very happy with it. It's played everything I've put in it so far. I've had a couple of DVD to skip once during playback out of over 50 I've played in it. I've made VCD's that play great without any problems. I'm looking forward to making SVCD's and trying them. It's a great product that I would reccomend to anyone. I picked this one up for $89.00 on sale at Outpost.com a few months ago. I love it! |

This unit is GREAT!!!!! It has played everything I have put in it. When I put in DVD-R's that have no menus it does not auto-play. It will read it and then go to STOP, so I have to hit the ENTER/> button.
I had an Apex 800 which is a great unit also but it was pick with recorded DVD's it would not play 1 out of every 4 (approx). It would also hang on starting SVCD's I would have to hit the FF button and then PLAY.
I have not tried WMA or JPG files yet but it is supposed to play them also.
This unit as well as other APEX will play PAL Region 0. I do not have any other PAL discs with different regions.
Also plays music CD's.
I STRONGLY recommend this unit. |

| Got this free with my Toshiba 42H81. It works fine. The only problem is when you turn it on some times it does not "init". I think it might be an issue with turning it off with the remote, and then turning it on with the button on the unit. For free or $100 I was suprised it was progressive scan. Looks beautiful on my Toshibe. |

I am giving the Apex 2100 a rating of "9" for its ability to play homemade SVCD and JPGs discs. I tested over 15-20 DVD players on the market before selecting the APEX. I burned my VCD and SVCD disc using Roxio's WinOnCD (formerly CeQuadrat) and all have played without a hitch. One note worthy feature is the ability to display jpgs files quickly on TV screen (unlike other DVD players like the JVC which took more than 5 seconds to completely refresh and display a jpg image).
It plays all my mp3 discs without any issue. I am very happy with this baby ! |

Pros:
- did not have a problem with SVCDs (bin/cue burned with CDRWIN).
- Average picture quality
- Plays jpg files, raw mpg
- silver look (well better than the other cheap looking apex models)
Cons:
- VCDs were jumpy
- remote extremely sucks! you have to aim the remote at an angle, I also had a problem with the play/pause/resume buttons.
- mp3/jpg menu could use a little work
- POWER ON bug! I usually cannot power on the player on the first try, I'd have to power off and on again.. then I will see the digital display.
Overall, it's a decent player for 99 bucks. However, I returned it, too many little annoyances hehe. I'm looking to buy a multidisc changer now. I usually watch SVCDs, and they often come in 2-3 CDs. It's annoying having to get up each time to insert a new disc. :) |

Just got the 2100 player at Fry's for $99.99+tax.
It play all my VCDs and SVCDs on CD-R/CD-RW.
DVD playback was acceptable but it would occasionally skip like the other member reported.
It is a good player for the money. |

I have the 2100 for a about 1 month now and it is my first DVD player. I have it connected through a Pro-Logic receiver (no digital) for sound and through component inputs on my non-digital televsion for video.
It plays my MP3 files flawlessly on CD-R and CDRW media, but be sure to use finalized CDRWs. I didn't at first and the machine would just lock up. Called Apex tech support and they were useless. So after some online reseach I figured out I had to treat CDRW like CD-R and finalize them. Would have been nice if the 2100 manual said so.
DVD movies are another matter. The machine will occasionally skip; the sound becomes somewhat distored and the picture jumps. At first I thought it was my DVD, until it did it on another. What it strange is that it went through one movie just fine, but upon playing it again the next day, it began to skip.
When it does properly play DVDs, they look great, at least to my untrained eye.
I've also played JPEG files and they look fine. The 2100 allows you to create customized slide shows with different transition effects. The 2100 will automatically resize the image to fit your screen, or you can manually zoom.
The remote is okay for the price, but it needs better range and field of view. You have to point it directly at the 2100 to get any response.
The 2100 also has a power light that is always on: red when off and green when on. It's a large LED, so it's kind of distracting.
Finally, one last gripe. More times than not, when you power up the unit, nothing happens: the display remains dark, or reads "Close". Cycling the power normally fixes this.
Overall, a very nice machine for the money (under $100). I love the fact it can play practically all formats and it looks sleek, but the quality problems are disturbing, even at this price. |

As expected with an Apex unit, it does have a "cheap" feel to it, but it's playing everything I'm putting in it. I've tried a number of cheap CD-R and CD-RW in various formats and all worked fine. HP branded DVD+RW and +R media both work great. I also tried MPG files (VCD spec) burned as a data disc and they also played fine.
The remote buttons are on the small side and the layout of the buttons could be improved some. |

I just picked this up tonight so I haven't yet put it through all it's paces. I have been using an AD 1500 but lately it started having trouble with my SVCDs, so I decided to give this a try.
So far it has played all my proublem SVCDs perfectly, including one SVCD that caused proublems in 2 AD 1500s and a GoVideo and Phillips machine, but that also played well in an AD 500w and an AD 800.
So far I've tried Imation, Durabrand and Memorex 80 min CDRs as well as a Pringo 99 min CDR with a 90 Min vcd on it. They all played perfectly. Alt audio on SVCD plays fine. I even stuck in a backup data cd with various mpg, jpeg and mp3 files on it and they all played fine.
The remote isn't perfect but is a big improvement over the remote for the AD 1500 and the wretched remote for the Ad 500. It seems to have a stronger signal, you don't have to be as accurate in pointing it for it to work. My biggest complaint is that the play button is a good 2 inches from the fwd, rev and Pause buttons.
It also looks much nicer than most of the Apex line.
The only reason I don't give this a 10 is the lack of an optical audio output.

vcd/svcd on cdr/cdrw with vbr/cbr
vcd/svcd chapters work
plays mp3/wma/jpg/picture cd
even plays the audio track of a windows media video file
plays non-vcd/svcd standard mpegs..
just pop in a cd-rom with mpegs and other files on it and you can browse around the disc. play an mpeg, an mp3, a wma, jpg, whatever.
dual analog audio out
coax digital audio out (selectable stream format)
component video out
s-video out
rca video out
apex's website INCORRECTLY says it has optical audio out- it does NOT
$99 at walmart.com plus about $7 shipping
a great unit for the price.
nice looking with a good flourescent display.

Ok.. I was very skeptical of APEX. I figured that there is no way you can have your cake and eat it too. Then after reading many reviews for APEX and having my own sibling buying one.. I was conviced that APEX could play everything.
Eventhough I knew it would play everything, I hesitated to buy it, because the comsmetics sucks. Call me superfisical, but I don't care. I'm not going to stick a crappy looking piece of hardware w/ my other "Cool" HTS components.
Then I went to Apex's website and saw the AD-2100. I was like "HELL YEAH!!" this unit was gorgeous. The silver finish, along with its thin full size chasis was perfect. Apex finally came up w/ a design that looks hot.
When I bought it, I didn't even look at the review, because I knew it would play everything, and it has!!
So for all of you who have nice HTS, this APEX will fit in perfectly w/o looking like a Wally Special.
Ok.. now I have to test all the features. Oh.. to add some useful infomation, the 2100 plays SVCD and VCD like a charm :) |

I just bought this player one week ago from J and R Music World/Computer World for $100 US. With the extra warranty and shipping charges it came to $125 US ($200 CDN, since I am from Ontario).
I did most of my research throught this website, through the manufacturers own websites (I also looked at Pioneer and Toshiba) and through some friends and their experiences with DVD players. I quickly decided that APEX was going to be my brand name (first to incorporate MP3 and KodakCD compatibility), but then it came down to which model I should get. I looked at the AD-1500, AD-5131, AD-1100W and the AD-600A and tried to analyze the cost vs. range of compatibility issues. I found that I would probably be spending about $100 US no matter what model I picked, and I thought that the AD-2100 and AD-2500 models were much higher priced than that. I found the J and R website by browsing this forum and was shocked to find the AD-2100 being offered for $100 US (I would have bought the AD-2500, but I guess it's not available yet)! I jumped on this opportunity immediately, after reading all about the AD-2100 on the APEX website. DVD, VCD, SVCD, JPEG, MPEG, KodakCD, MP3, Windows Media, plus tons of additional functions on the player itself!!!! Show me another player that can claim half of that for $100 US!!!!
I had the player within one week (UPS Ground) and have barely begun testing all the features, but already it's blown me away. I have yet to test the X(S)VCD compatibility, but I am pretty confident. It even looks cool. I did have to buy an RF-Modulator ($50 CDN) so that I could play it on my old TV, but no biggie.
I wish the AD-2500 was available, but for now, I am convinced this player is best for the money!!! It has played everything I have thrown at it so far and I hope to a have a more extensive review in the future... |

| This player would play standard Vcds. But when xvcds were thrown at it, it would skip constantly. This was not good considering most my backups are xvcds. Don't know why the apex couldn't handle the xvcds. Most are at 704x480, and the audio is 48,000hz, max bitrate at 2300. Those may be odd parameters but they did work in a JVC 523 that was 3 years old. Overall not happy with the Apex 2100, it should have been able to play my xvcds. |

| I just got my Apex AD-2100, and I am thrilled with it so far. I haven’t finished testing, but the results so far are stellar. It has played every disk I put in it. It played VCD on every brand of disk I have, SVCD on every disk, MPEG files of various types downloaded from the internet, MP3s of varying bitrate, WMAs And JPEGs. Not to mention that the DVD playback was good. The remote is OK kind of has a cheap feel to it, but it works fine. There are many options with this player, that you would expect on one costing twice as much. The front display is kind of weird, but that doesn’t really matter. When the 2500 comes out it will be the perfect player by adding progressive scan. The 2100 is as close as it comes to perfect for the money, and I haven’t found a more versatile one for any price. |
