It's a cheap player but it's also crap. I've already taken the first unit for an exchange but the problem I'm describing didn't change so it's quality issue. Seems that Apex stopped the VCD support on later 1600's and it skips a lot for a new player. The closed caption that I depend on always came in scrambled and I've had to turn them off and rely on subtitle, which a few DVD don't offer. Oh yeah noise as heck and that's saying a lot for someone who's hard of hearing.

I wouldn't even stick around and see how much worse the player can get after a while but I'm willing to bet they will completely fail just after warranty expired. Defiantly one player I won't recommend.

Worked perfectly for three months, then the dreaded rotational noise came along. Player now skips after playing a movie for a short duration of time. I would not recommend getting this player.

Piece of crap player. Excessive rotational noise. This POC vibrates like a buzzer. Occassionally freezes for a second or two while playing DVDs; and it throws in the occasional white blocks during high action. I found it would play some VCDs, but not any with a menu. On SVCDs the audio and video would actually go out of sync.

I returned this machine and got a Panasonic.

only problem i have had with it of all the things i have tried so far was with cvd.

i returned 2 of them due to them not sitting flat which caused the player to make noise and have skipping problems or other problems reading the cd/dvd.

have used ritek dvd-rw 2x
have used memorex v2 dvd-r
generic cdr's and cdrw

has played every disc i put in it no problems.

Tried 2 players, returned both, although both worked to some extent. First one produced strong rotation noise,
second had some problems with rendering (looks like
its internal processor was a bit slow and skipped frames on fast motion scenes. Both players did not play VCD with the message "No disk". Finally bought Norcent DP-300.

This is an ok player for those who have the luxury and resources for peeling out Svcd's. On the other hand its too much of an effort to create playable VCD's. My AD660 will play anything you put in it,NO QUESTIONS ASKED!! Ill either give this one to the kids or go ship it back n grab one that requires less effort for Svcd playback. Should have popped the extra 20 bux and got the 1500 when I saw it.

I got this one for $53 at walmart and I was totally impressed. I converted some of my divx movies to mpeg2 (svcd standard) and just put them on a disc. I didn't author it or anything. And it played pefect. Then I stuck some random *.mpg files on the disc, and it played all of them. Some didn't fit right on the screen, but they played.

I used nero to make a DATA CD and it played the movies I put on there (not divx btw).

Just got this player for $56.00 at Ulitmate Electronics. Plugged it in and was instantly thrilled to see that it played my svcds that I had burned on
CD-R. No more copying my movies to XVCD format onto CD-RW to view on my Panasonic. A very cool player with very nice features. Remote a bit on the small side.

I love this unit! I got this player before they stated removing the SVCD/VCD support. Like other posts, if the box isn't labeled for SVCD/VCD support, then you are out of luck. Plays everthing I've tried so far: DVD-R, SVCD, VCD, MP3, WMA, JPEG. I tried a cDVD once, but it had no audio (may be problem with how I authored it). If it had Divx support, it would be perfect!!!

I used Nero and Sonic MyDVD to make the disks.

Up until today I loved APEX players. I have a 1200 and two of the 1500's already. I bought 2 more of the AD1600's today and both have the same problems.

Neither one will play VCD's that I have been using in the other players in the house and some of these are professional VCD's that I bought!

Both have stability problems with SVCD's that I have made. Both AD1600's vibrate terribly when playing some of the SVCD's I made as well as some commercial audio CD's! The vibration is so bad that other items on the shelf resonate and and make so much noise that you have to turn up the volume to drown it out! I don't believe the spindle is well mounted inside but I'm not going to open it up to find out. I'm going to return both pieces of crap in the morning!

In short... Apparently no MPEG1 support and unstable MPEG2 (svcd) support. Poor quality drive mechanism and flimsy(er) tray loader than the 1500.

A disappointed...
SVCDummy

I bought my AD-1600 in June 2002 and it played my VCDs, MP3s, WMAs, and my CD-RWs with JPG and GIF pictures. For 3 months. Then it stopped playing DVDs in the middle of movies. Then it would not play any DVDs (nO dISc). Had to sent it to Apex for repairs, when it came back, it would not play ANYTHING AT ALL. Sent it back to Apex for more repairs, they kept it over a month. They told me when sending the 2nd time they would replace the whole unit. Then they didn't. I've had no DVD player for 5 months now. I will never ever buy ANY apex product for the rest of MY entire long life.

I though it was good, but the unit does not play some VCDs and SVCDs - did not figure out why yet.
I bought it as a replacement for Electorohome 8181A, which was a big mistake (the store ran out of Electrohome DVD players).
I would rather now go to Walmart to get Norcent which is in the same price range but it can play any region DVDs and Macrovision can be disabled with remote control.
Would not really recommend it to anyone.
Beware of the models which do not play Video Discs at all.

I bought this from Amazon.com with some worries that I might get a unit that doesn't do SVCD. I was right in my worries. I popped in an SVCD and it wouldn't read it. On the outside of the box, I noticed the logo Compact Disc Video was taped over. Sad, very sad.

Beautiful unit though--much prettier than the AD-1500 which I also have.

I'm not sure if the people voting on here just don't know what they are doing, or if they just don't care, but this dvd player is a bueaty...it'll play anything, VCD, SVCD...it'll do it all. You people that say it won't play VCD's mor than likely just don't know how to make one. You might not be able to go straight from bin/cue to disc, but if you run it through Tmpgenc and then to VCD it's a perfect copy every time. To all those who say it can't I offer this little bit of advice...Take a little time to learn what you are doing before you slam the hardware...the hardware is usually only as good as the person who tries to operate it...REMEMBER THAT! I have had the 1500, and only went to the 1600 because I got it free for signing up for DSL service...and I am happy as can be that I got it...it even does WMA files...thatS awesome! Apex is definately a class act in cheap dvd players that will do it all! If you have any questions about how to make a VCD...feel free to email me...

I bought this for $48 at Menards prior to xmas 2002. I wanted it for VCD's. Well, I am a newbie to VCD's and didn't realize that there is a true VCD format. This player won't work for that. But, it works GREAT with mpeg 1 or mpeg 2 files. I have a lot of AVI(divx, xvid) files that I was wanting to convert to VCD. I just changed my plans a little. I use Tmpgenc to convert the AVI's to mpeg. Since you can't fast forward through the mpeg's, I just chop the file into 4 - 6 parts. That way I can restart a movie and only have to rewatch a few minutes if I had stopped in the middle of a file. I burn my mpeg's to cd with Adaptec EasyCD Creator version 4.
Anyway I have ended up being very pleased with this player.

I wasn't sure what to go with on the rating for this player. Since I used the firmware upgrade to make it think it's in Australia, the macrovision has been disabled and region encoding is switched off. This is a must for my setup, as my VCR, punk that it is, respects the macrovision and for a few days after purchase, my DVDs looked horrible. Macrovision is evil. I can only patch my DVD player through my VCR for playback since my TV only has a cable input, not a few pairs of RCA jacks like newer sets have.

This little baby will play anything I've thrown at it so far. Mp3's, vcds, svcds, DVDs, regular audio cds, the works. The sound quality is very good when piped through a high quality stereo/surround sound system.

I did, however, have a major problem with it. 2 months ago it started acting flaky and wouldn't eject a disc I had in it. When I turned the player on it kept resetting itself (constant LOADING being displayed on the front of the unit). Turns out there was a blown capacitor on the power supply module board. I got lucky when I desoldered it, bought a new one at Fry's, came home and soldered the new one in. Fixed the damn thing for $3. The capacitor was the big 1000V/16uF capacitor on the rear power supply board. If you're having serious problems with your ad1500 and can do some simple soldering, I suggest you look here first.
