this has been a great DVD player for the last 6 years, but now that it is unable to read DVD+/- R/RWs, this machine is obsolete!

This Model has been Discontinued for at least 5 years! the only way to get one of these (region free) players is through eBay (around $100 US)

Best player I've ever had. Plays everything I've tried.
Best of all plays DVD -R DL (RIDATA 4X). Used Pioneer 111D to burn. Works great.

I have tried DVD+R (HP 4x, 8x), DVD+DL (Verbatim 4x) and DVD+RW 2.4x and they work fine. MP3 also works. My player can even watch movies made in region 6 and 3 with no mod to it. GReat DVD player if price is taken into account and consider a great majority of brand name DVD players like Sony (SLV-D360P), Toshiba SD-291 cannot play DVD+DL and even some 8x DVD+R (like Toshiba SD-291)

Tried my first double-layer burn tonight on a Memorex Double Layer Dual +/- Format DVD Recorder [DVD+/-DLRWL1F6] Staples: $100. Burned a backup of Harry Potter, 7.6 GB. Played well on both my good 'ol Apex AD-1500s with hacked firmware.

I have a bit of trouble with the scene selection menus but I believe that is because I aggressively removed PUOs. I "next"-ed through all the scenes without a problem.

Comments:
I backedup one of my DVD's onto a Memorex 4x DVD+R, and had Nero change the bitsetting/booktype to a DVD-ROM mode. It burned successfully, but when I inserted the burnt disk into my AD 1500, it was saying, "Disc Loading" for a while, then it just said that there was "No Disc" in the player.

It was rather disheartening since it took a long time for me to rip and burn my DVD. I was hoping I can back up all my DVD disks this way, so I can leave the original in the case and have the burnt disks to view.

I have not upgraded my firmware on my AD 1500 and I'm using an LG GSA-4120B. I burned at 2.4x, just so I didn't go too fast and to better the chance of a proper burn.

Can anyone please tell me if my AD 1500 just can't read burnt DVD's or what I may be doing wrong and what I should try out? Any input, suggestions or insight would be much, much appreciated!

I guess this is the european version of the AD-1500. All went well from in the beginning. We got 5 of these, one didn't last for long, but the other ones are good. I can play everything with the factory-firmware (dvd, vcd, svcd, mp3dvd, mp3cd, jpgdvd, jpgcd), except for DVD+R! It won't take these, maybe because they're burned at more then 2x speed (I used Philips DVD+R). The funny thing is that it does read my DVD+RW movies.

Comments:
Howdy! I purchase my APEX 1500 in SAM's for $60 three years ago. It is an excellent player... highly recommended (specially for the price.)

Things to watch out for:
1) Remote: It is not a very good one. It has poor range (5-7 feet) and an incredible small angle of projection. I solved this problem with an universal 4-in-1 remote, but I still need the original remote for certain features.
2) DVD Media: It plays ANY CD-R and CD-RW media in the market. Excellent for SVCDs! DVD media is another matter... understanding that this is an old machine it does not read anything burned at higher speeds than 2.4x. Anything burned higher than 2.4x it will give a "NO DISC" error. Also, if you write anything on the media (or worse... make a label) then it can either freeze or skip. My recommendation is to write with a permanent marker in the clear inner ring (near the center) so your hand writing is not over the writable areas.

I guess that future DVD Players will be able to read DVD media burner at 4x or 8x... but your APEX 1500 will not be one of them.

Hack it... and enjoy your Anime!

What can I say. This unit works like a champ and plays pretty much everything. It might be tough to find now. Frys has a few open box ones left, and is selling out fast.

Yeah, it's a pretty crappy design, compared to my Sony and Toshiba, but it plays more formats/media types than either of them. The macrovision hack is great too!

I've had the 1500 under a year and it was great until recently. Now it pauses and skips playing back on certain no name cheap DVD-R where my PC DVD Rom and my Sony player have no problems. It'll be cheaper for me to buy a new player for the bedroom than to reburn all those backups.

I have had the Apex AD-1500 now for about a year and a half, and litterly it has to be the best player that I have tryed. I always carry a simple copy of a vcd with me when I go shopping at electronic stores and try out the dvd players. Some don't even atempt to play the vcd. I have tryed other forms of video compression on cd what you guys would call xvcd or xsvcd. To some extent it did play them but the quality sucked ass. So I rather stick to regular vcd and svcd. I'm happy......... I haven't had the dvd player freez up on me while playing the vcd though I did have it start freaking out on me once. There was no video but the audio was there when I played a vcd. But when I popped the vcd back in the player it worked beautifly. I have burned vcd's using nero, disc juggler, and Sony CD Extream and they all worked. I have yet to find a better player. The next thing that apex needs to invest in is a mpeg4 divx decorder chip so we have a stand alone divx player. That would be the Shizzle. Thats all folks and thanks for listening to me blabber on about this subject.
Take Care and Share ;-)

This thing plays everything I throw at it! I haven't had a single problem with it yet. I was lucky enough to pick up the last one that Circuit City had. They were out of stock, so I purchased their floor display model for a discounted price! I ended up only paying $42 for this gem.

Have had this player for about 18 months. Has worked well in that it plays everything I have tried in it, although DVD+R disks (Verbatim) seem to make it behave somewhat sluggishly until it loads the disk (takes a few seconds longer than normal DVD-ROMS). Also FF through DVD+R/RW is difficult to do. Otherwise a very good player.

Lately however, I have noticed a warbling sound coming from inside the player, as if the drive mechanism is off balance while it is playing a movie. This does not appear to affect the video performance. The sound will go away if you stop and restart playing the disk.

Since it was the cheapest, highly rated DVD player I could find when I bought it a few years ago, I can't complain about its value thus far.

I have this unit for about 3 years now. Got it from Wall-Mart (Toronto/Canada) for about 50$US on Chrtistmas sale. I was disapointed about the look but never felt sorry for the quality.

Media: Works with everything that I put in it. From cheap CD-R to expensive DVD+RW. Have tried all formats expect DVD-RAM for which I had no burner to write test disc. Few Cicero CD-R had jerky playback with skipping audio but those were also X(S)VCDs completly out of standard authored (read bellow on).

Format: All commercial DVDs as well as all DVDs that I've authored with various software and burned with Nero are working flawlessly. Standard VCD/SVCD is also playing nicely.
Some people were complaining about jerky playback on non-standard VCD. I'm always using TMpeg Plus for authoring VCD. Tried all possible methods (CBR, VBR with oldstyle and PB spoilage type, CQ VBR and CQ) but found that no matter what I use MPEG-1 standard simply does not cut the best intention to produce best disc. My recomendation is to use CQ-95 with High (best quality) motion search precision since it is fastest mode that produced same as other slower VBR methods. XVCD with bitrates equal or lower then standard are playing perfect. However had 2 discs authored as XVCD with bitrate of 2000 and 3600 wich both were skipping playback, aslo noticed skipping and stalling problems in VBR XVCD in segments of where bitrate drops lower then 500, so suggest setting lowest bitrate >500 in your VBR encoding. XVCD is my preffered "compression" method of storing max 2 hr movie on standard CD, and this player plays them perfectly. XSVCD is normally higher quality but did not test it much since it does not serve my purpose of storing one movie on one cd. In general this player plays X(S)VCD OK if they are authored near standard bitrate. Further you go with your bitrate you increase the chance of player to start puking on your movie.
Extras: No Subpicture (subtitles) or subaudio (secondary audio) support in SVCD.
Kodak Picture CD and JPEGs: Aare not natively supported, however you can author your album as (S)VCD.
This Player can convert PAL/NTSC framerate for proper display on your TV.
I have never tampered firmawere since I am concerned about (X)VCD playbilty afterwards. Some people do expirience problems with it since hack for this player is based on older Hitacker/Apex 1000 player.

In general 99% percent satisfied with it.

I have to say, this is just the best thing i've ever bought. Have friends with 300$ sony players that don't even compare.
It will play everything from DVD+RW's to the crappiest cheap CD-R's.

I've never had any issues with it breaking down, however, one time, I did get the tray stuck, and pulled on it slightly to get it loose.
After this, nothing would work, only said "No Disk" after.

I opened it up myself, and found that the data cable from the laser reader had come off (it isn't connected very well). After about 5 minutes of figuring out how to put it back on, I was back in business.

I have had this for almost 3 years, with TONNES and TONNES of playing times on it. I practially gave up watching Television, and downloaded and burned all the shows I liked, then watched them on this player 'cause it was more convenient. I have no issues whatso ever with the quality of this machine.

90$ Canadian at Future Shop when they were clearing them out.

Returned my Apex AD 1100W and got one of these bad boys. Had no problems playing different CDr/w media... notice w/ some SVCDs that the fast forward loops, but works fine on others. Going to hack the firmware tonight!!!

I wouldn't recomend it as your premier DVD player, but is a great player for the money. Will be used for playback on VCD, SVCD only.. possibly DVDr as well, when I get there. Didn't get any extended warranty, we'll see how long it lasts.
