Tested three different manufacturer's (CMC Magnetics, Ritek, and Prodisc) CD-Rs, all worked very well with CD-DA, MP3, WMA, JPEG, and VCD data. However, I also tested two manufacturer's of CD-RWs, Prodisc and Infodisc. The Prodisc worked well in the AD-1225, but the Infodisc refused to play most of time.
Compared to my Koss KS5192, the AD-1225 is sluggish in rendering the images. However, you can zoom in on the image and move the image across the screen, unlike my KS5192. Slideshows, rotations, and eight (??) transistions are also possible.
The AD-1225 does surprisingly well with VCDs, no choppy audio or frozen video, but does not support MPEGISO at all. That sucks...
If the main reason you want this DVD player is for MP3/WMA support, find a better model. This unit does not support long filnames (only eight uppercase letters) or ID3 tags. Programming or shuffling tracks is possible on Audio CDs, but not MP3s or WMA! You can choose to repeat one file or the whole disc, but _stupidly_ the AD-1225 cannot repeat a folder!
For $30 however, I guess I can't really complain. |

| I have had this player for a long time and have had little in the way of problems. Not long ago the door started closing on its own when taking out or putting in a disc from time to time. Other than that I have enjoyed this player. Also, my player will not play DVD+R media. Great deal for the price if you can deal with a few small glitches that show up later on. |

| Plays my VCDs / SVCDs but occasionally "freezes" on them. Lack of long filename on mp3s is a pain in the butt, as is the fact that - inexplicably - the "shuffle" function works fine on regular CDs, but does not work on mp3 discs! But you expect oddball stuff like that with APEX. Hey, for 40 bucks, not bad, I guess, but still I'll be replacing it soon, I'm sure. |

A basic player, I think we've had our for a year or more. It always plays dvds.
My wife discover how to defeat the copywrite protection when trying to use this player to record onto our Zenith XBR 413 dual dvd recorder and vhs. What you do is simply start the recording, than start the player. This always works to defeat copywrite protection.

The player worked fine for about 10 months then it crapped out one day. Will not eject the tray even after having the unit unplugged from the wall for a week to reset. Opened the unit up and forced the tray open. I put in an audio CD and the player doesn't recognize it at all. No video is displayed at all.
There is a 1 year warranty but they require you to give them a credit card through email or on the phone. The reason is that the parts are covered but the labour is not so they will charge you an insance amount of money for any repairs needed. Easier to spend another $50 for a different player.
I wouldn't recommend this player unless you feel lucky. Did everything I needed it to when it was working, now it's just a piece of junk on my table. |

| I just picked this dvd player up at sears for $40. I originally wanted the AD-1110w but could not find it available anywhere so I decided on this one (AD-1225). I was skeptical of it at first but it has played every vcd and svcd that I have thrown at it. It is in a sturdy case (I have 3 other apex dvd players) and this one also has a nice feature that if you're watching a vcd/svcd and you hit stop you can resume from where you stopped from. My other apex dvd players will completely stop the disc when you push stop and then you have to fast forward to get back to where you were. this one is great b/c you can stop it and start right back up like its a real dvd. well i've only had it for 2 days now but if it breaks for some reason (which i don't think it will) i'll repost back to this board to let you know. Right now I'd highly recommend this player if you just want to basically play vcd's and svcd's. All the movies were burned on cheapest media I can find. |

Its a nice player but the only problems I can find with this player is that it doesn't support MPEGISO-Disc, the AFF option is only useful for certain widescreen movies, and the mp3/wma option doesn't support long filenames.
Other than that everything is A-OK. Plenty of video and audio options on the rear of the player, great video, supports DVD-/+R/W and CD-R/W, easy to use menu system, and low profile system.
All in all, a great buy for the price. |

Paid $38 at Sears after reading all the reviews. Plays authored DVD's on -R +R and +RW just fine which was my main reason for getting it. Plays VCD's on CDR created using TMPEnc+Nero 5.5 just fine, actually surprsingly smooth.
The only thing I'm disappointed is that it DOES NOT PLAY VIDEO MEDIA FILES like my AD1110W!!! My AD1110 (which I still have) plays MPEG1 and VOB (yes...VOB files!) files directly burned on DVD+RW and -R. The only thing my AD1110 can't do is play DVD+R. I'll be keeping both...
Still a good buy for the $$. Highly Recommended. |

| I need a player to play raw mpegs and this one will NOT do it. It will also not play Memorex dvd+rw. It will play svcd and dvd+r. That’s all I tried. I've had a few Apex players and this one seems to be of a higher quality than the other ones(very quiet and smooth), but it’s going back. |

THIS PLAYER WILL PLAY DUAL LAYER DISC'S
I AM NOT SURE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS WITH LION KING 1 1/2 AND SPRINGTIME WITH ROO- BUT DISNEY HAS A TECH LINE # ON THE DISC SO I CALLED IT.
THEY GAVE ME A FIX TO PLAY THESE MOVIES.
Watch display on screen: Says..."loading...DVD..'Play'--when you see PLAY come up immediatly hit STOP then ENTER. Takes a few seconds but goes directly to movie.
After it starts you can use Menu button to access other features.
Try it or call the number they were helpful. |

I bought an Apex 1100, which worked beautifully for about three months, and then crapped out on me. So, I took it back to Wal-Mart, and found that it had been discontinued. I had to pay an extra $15 to get this one instead. There were two reasons I bought the 1100:
1) So I could play my VCD's (I like to make little home movies of all our digital pictures), and this was the only DVD player I have been able to find (at a reasonable price) that handles homemade VCD's.
2) So my daughter could have a DVD player.
Unfortunately, after I traded the 1100 in, and got the 1225 instead, I found out that the 1225 DOES NOT PLAY dual-layer DVD's.
I am almost positive this is the problem. We have tried Lion King 1-1/2 and Springtime With Roo (both of which are dual-layer), and neither one works at all. I don't know whether or not the 1100 worked with them, but it really sucks that this player won't play two of her favorite movies.
Other than that, though, this player plays everything I throw at it. It's not as nice as other DVD players I have used, but it still beats my old GE (which didn't play anything but commercial DVD's. No DVD+ or -R's, no CD-R's, no CD-RW's, etc.)
We have a Symphonic DVD/VCR combo in our bedroom, and it is a very nice DVD player, but it doesn't play our VCD's. So, I guess I have three DVD players that each have their own pros and cons.
Again: This DVD Player DOES NOT PLAY dual-layer discs (at least, it doesn't play "Springtime with Roo" or "Lion King 1-1/2"). |

| I bought this unit only to check DVD-R's burned with my Kron video editor, and so far it works. I would not want this to be my only DVD player. The construction is super cheap, but that's OK, considering the price. In fact, as a retired engineer, I'm surprised anything this cheap can actually work at all! The remote control design is bad, hard for normal size fingers to operate. And there is a strange odor like something burning... might want to unplug it before going away from home. I'm keeping the packing until the first 90 days is up, in case I have to take it back to W-mart and get another. |

| Disks wouldn't load sometimes. I had to push the tray in and hold on to it while the disk went into the player. Even then by slowly letting the disk in, it wouldn't load correctly and the disk would jam. So I unscrewed the metal cover and put it back over the player but didn't use the screws again. I think the cover deformed the loading tray a bit causing it to jam the disk. There must be a very little clearance there. Now, the disks load fine. Other than this problem the player is great. |

Quit working after six weeks, and it wouldn't even eject the disc that was in there.
Junk.
During the glorious six weeks of operation, it did read my SVCDs, but the menus were not functional. Rendering of JPEGs on photo discs seemed sluggish, and it would read no more than 200 or 300 on a single disc (I forget the number). |

Although this unit is an inexpensive player, packed with features, I wouldn't recommend it to my dog.
When playing more than one disc, the unit's laser overheats and fails. The first disc always plays fine, but subsequent discs play poorly or not at all. The discs always play like they are dirty when in fact, they are clean.
The memory in this unit is extremely slow or minimal, the unit is slow to react and quickly affects my interest in playing with easter eggs or additional features.
My suggestion is to invest another hundred bucks or so and purchase a unit that is much more reliable. |

| The Apex Ad-1225 I bought from sears plays all my self made vcd and Svcds and mp3 disks flawlessly. It was only $30 at Sears. So far every disk I put inside it has worked. I have a more expensive Toshiba Dvd player that can't handle half the formats that my apex does. Great buy for $30. I give it a solid 9 . If it had a Spatializer N-2-2 like my Toshiba which improves my surround system it would be a definite 10. |
