This does play DVD+R discs, but only if their book type is set to DVD-ROM.
Otherwise it plays pretty much anything including -R and PAL. |

Plays VCD/SVCD fine. Plays MPEGISO usually. Sometimes you have to reinsert the disc a couple of times to get this to work.
Fickle with DVD+R. One disc that had only three short titles worked; a bunch more discs, with twenty titles, did not. Tried 20 titles @ ~1min per title, and 20 titles @ ~9 min per title. Neither worked.
For all intents and purposes, it does not work with this brand of DVD+R.
Brand is Memorex DVD+R 8x. |

My Apex 1201 started out playing all DVD+Rs and +RWs, but now only plays VCDs and SVCDs. It does play mpeg clips burned onto CD-Rs nicely. Even my 1100W doesnt play clips very well. Too bad about the DVD+R/RWs...I've got lots. MP3 discs played really well on DVDs.
Burned Memorex, Philips and TDK DVD+Rs using Nero. |

Plays almost everything I throw at it, including VCD, SVCD, MPEG-1, JPEG, DVD-R, DVD-RW, but it does NOT play DVD+R or DVD+RW!
The remote control is poorly designed, you have to push a FUNCTION button (like "shift"), the CD sot opens/closes very LOUDLY, and it doesn't play DVD+Rs. You get what you pay for, but all in all, not too bad for $30. |

| I bought this system hoping it would play both DVD-R & DVD+R. Most of my movie is in DVD+R. The Circuit City guys told me it'll played both. Guess what? Brought it home, it didn't even play any DVD+R i throw at it. That's not the worst part, it's the fact that it's obnoxiously loud when eject the disc. Yikes! Picture is not that great, you'll notice it when you compare it with higher quality DVD+R. But what can you expect for a $35 DVD Player? |

Just bought this unit 4 days ago from circut city. Plays DVDs fine, plays SVCDs fine, and even plays MP3s fine. The MP3 disk I was using was a DIGITAL MEDIA CDR and I have played just about every version of CDRs in it for SVCDs they all work great. In SVCD, I was able to fast forward, zoom, and rewind. MP3s, the only complaint is I can not fast forward during playback, but jumping from track to track and folder to folder is simple.
Model # is D12010209099****AMC1. I am not sure the version of the firmware. I have also not tried DVDRs, but as my AD1500 plays them fine and my friend's AD1200 plays them fine, I do not anticipate a problem.
Actually, this model seems to be more SVCD user friendly than my AD1500.
Great unit, chaeap price. Only complaint is the remote is a bit of a pain, but for the money, I can more than live with that. |

Hate the remote, but worth putting up with.
Love the features and it plays everything I have thrown at it.
HATE the reliability.
Bought an AD-1200 @ CC: 2 1/2 weeks later it stopped reading CD-Rs and CD-RWs, pressed DVDs only.
Took advantage of the CC no-questions 30 day return and swapped it for an AD-1201. Worked perfectly for 5 1/2 months... then the exact same problem.
I bought a Magnavox replacement instead... Apex is too much hassle. Hate the Magnavox's features compared to the Apex but the Apex does me no good sitting there saying 'NO DISC'.
The CC sales weasel said the Apex has a 60% return rate and they just throw them away... means they must be getting them dirt cheap to sell at $44 and still make even a penny. But on the other hand you can't really take anything a sales weasel says as gospel truth. |

Bought at Circuit City in Oregon in Dec '02. Plays DVD-R/RW fine, but took it back because of stupid remote control (you have to press a special "function" button in order to use direction arrow keys).
Got an Apex AD-1500 instead. Very sweet player. |

| This dvd player is perfect so far..I thought the 1200 was good the 1201 is even better.. It plays everything I throw at it..And at most places you should be able to get it for about 50$.. CDR/W's DVDR+-/W's everything..Svcd's Vcd's and Svcd's with VCD header. And it also plays Svcd's with Vcd header burned onto DVD+R/W same with Svcd's and Vcd's on DVD+R/W. Also it plays Mp3's burned onto DVD+R/W's perfectly.. I just burned them using NERO and they work great on my Apex.. Great dvd player great price |

I got this player on the 19th of July. Serial is: D12010209099****AMC1
I am not sure how to check the firmware version, but here is what I have found it will play:
Standard DVD's and SVCDs with no problem. it plays MP3 disks with a sampling rate of up to 256 (the highest I have) which are CBR.
It also plays DVDrs, specifically, the one that I made at the school I teach which was an Apple DVDr, using I-DVD, in a standard DVDr 4.7 gig format.
Everything plays fine, and in some ways, it out preforms my AD1500. Yes the remote is a bit of a pain, but for 50 buck, who can complain?
One thing I noticed is that you can NOT fast forward during MP3 playback, but switching from track to track and folder to folder is no problem.
SVCDs play flawlessly, and start up directly after putting them in without the "PCB ON" message and then having to press play. I can fast forward and fast rewind, however, slow mo ONLY works going forward. This is only for SVCDs, as it woes slow forward and backward with standard DVD's |

| ok i've own an ad 1200 since january. i had one that didn't come with vcd support so i flashed it to play vcd...i had an electrical outage and i guess the firmware was erased and i can't flash it again so i bought this 1201. The 1201 plays everything my 1200 played....my version which was made after july 29th is not flashable and region free doesn't work. the best thing i noticed is the annoying noise that was there during playback of dvd's in the 1200 isn't there anymore. it pisses me off that i had to go and buy another dvd player...i should have gotten a 1201 in the first place and this probly wouldn't have happened....i'm going to test it out more and report back with an evaluation. |

| Plays SVCD's great but burned DVD's have been disapointing. +RW Fuji's work fine, but the Fuji -r hang on loading and the +r Fuji's say "no disk". The -R seem to work for others so I'll try some other brands with a darker dye color closer to the dark purple of the +RW, rather than the very pale purple of the Fuji -R's. |

I have had two Apex players in the past, one of them broken after 12 months of use, which I found out was caused by the burnt out laser bulb. The other one I bought does not play VCD. I don't play VCD often and only found out after I had bought it for a couple of months, so I was stuck with it. Imagine my shock when I found out though, after all, Apex is supposed to be cheap but plays everything.
I know that some of 1201 still plays VCD, so I would caution you to test it immediately after you purchase it.
Better yet, why not get a Pioneer from Walmart? It plays a lot of formats.

$50 @ CC.
I bought this player to see if it plays PAL movies on DVD and VCD...and it does with no problems. THE CHEPEST WAY TO GO IF YOU WANT MULTISYSTEM PLAYER.
The APEX 1201 is my second DVD player first one is 500A ($125) and still works good after 2.5 yrs.
APEX 1201:
Plays MPG files straight from CD but the Forward and Reverse does not work. ( but GOTO works )
Plays MP3 only gives 11 (spaces included) letters for description. Folders work too.
AVI files did not work
DVD-R work (+R dont work[4 me anyway])
ALL VCD's work Commercialy made VCD's work and copies ( I mean 'backups' )of Commercial VCD's work. My VCD pictures CD work.
I would like to see some better +R support in future (my old 500A plays them but choppy).
Macrovision doesn't bother me at all... who in their sane mind would want to copy a DVD to VHS anyway. ( just being a smartass- Im a proud ovner of DRU-500A and DVDXCOPY full + XPRESS Version)
I only give it an 8 because DVD tray is loud when Open/Close plus it sometimes jitters the disk while playing.

Overall, I've been satisfied with this unit for the month I've had it. Reading about all the problems others have had with it, I was going to return it for a higher-priced unit, but decided against it for the following reasons:
1) Its Macrovision is user-friendly. It only steps in if you are deliberatly trying to copy a protected DVD to analog VCR. You can use a VCR as a pass-through device between this DVD player and TV RF input without Macrovision screwing up the picture. You can also run the 1201's S-Video through a year 2002 Sony D8 cam A/D pass-through, for DV capture to a PC, without Macrovision ruining things. (In Fair-Use copy situations only, of course!) It would cost me $100 for a Sima Copy Guard eliminator, and $30 more for an RF converter to feed line level video to my TV -- so this $50 DVD player has saved me $130! That ALONE is enough reason for me to keep it!
(Please note: There are several designs of this model; there is no guarantee that the one YOU buy will perform as mine does!)
2) I havent had any of the problems others have reported, such as: noisey operation or a bad vibration; sticky disc drawer operation (although the drawer was open and loose out-of-the-box when I got it. No problems since); no crashes or lock-ups requiring re-booting to escape; No audio-sync problems on main programming -- only have had sync problems on a few DVD movies when accessing the "extras." But stopping and restarting (without losing my place) restores sync.
This is a cheap DVD player that does a hell-of-a-lot for the money. The remote sucks but get's the job done once you remember the shift button. The image quality looks good if you use the S-Video output. (Some users report problems with stripes when using the composite video out). If it the player lasts me a year (until I get better equipment) I'll feel I got my money's worth.

This player (Apex 1201) was purchased at Circuit City for $49-$10 rebate. Not bad. It is not a quality machine...but it plays the SVCDs and VCDs I have thrown into it. The discs were a bunch of low quality CD-R brands (ATT, SpinX, etc).
The quality is poor, but it was $40!
It also plays media captured on my Creative Digital VCR that is some BS proprietary format of MPEG-2. I used to have to convert these files with a process that took hours with Cyberlink PowerVCRII and Ulead Movie FActory 2. My Apex 1100W will not play these files without the forementioed conversion. The AD-1201 plays them with on a few hiccups here and there.
I recommend as a CHEAP player that will do as a backup/kids/cabin player. This does not appear to be a long term investment. |
