Hi everyone!

I live in Brazil and I bought yesterday, 29th April, an Apex AD-1200 DVD player. I haven't tested yet if it plays DVD-R or VCDs, just because I couldn't use a normal DVD that I did rent at a video store.
Well, the area code in Brazil is 4, so for now I can only use DVDs area 1. Is there anybody around that knows the code I can use to free all areas? Would you please tell me? Thanks so much and take care!

Sincerely,
Daniel
Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

I bought Apex 1200 at futureshop in Canada. It is the one with a white serial number starting with T.

So far so good, I did manage to play VCD's and SVCD's without any problems. That was mainly the reason I got the DVD player.

Great value for the cost.

I did not notice anything on the forum about the AD-1200 and a workaround for playing all VCD's. I unfortunatley own one of the units with the APIC chip inside, therefore I cannot flash the firmware to allow it to play standard VCD's.

However.....

What I do is re-burn the AVSEQ01.DAT, AVSEQ02.DAT, etc files to a new cdr and the AD-1200 menu picks them up and plays them everytime. I just rename the AVSEQ01 part and its the same as a menu. Not as snazzy as some of the VCD menus, but just as functional and easy to use.

Also on a side note, does anyone here notice that .DAT and .MPG files play far better on the APEX then in media player on the PC? I have a decent PC too.... Oh well.

For those who didn't know about re-burning the .DAT files from almost any VCD to make them work I hope this helps. For those that already knew, sorry to have taken your time.

Ant

I have a "real" DVD player for all my DVD needs... I use this as a MP3/SVCD player for the "other" stuff. Atthis price point, it's pretty much a disposable second machine to fit the need. For that purpose, this thing is really good. Not recommended if this is to be used as a primary machine as it doesn;t have the higher features.

This is a follow-up of a post I made here back on 9 February 2003.

Until now this Apex player has played most everything I threw in it flawlessly as I reported earlier. But just the other day, I attempted to play a test SVCD burned on a CD-RW and it came up as "NO DISC". The same thing occurred for numerous CD-Rs I threw in it (VCD, SVCD, Audio CD). I went to nerd-out.com to get some tips on how to correct this problem. After stretching out the springs in the laser assembly and adjusting the little ribbon thingie a number of times, it will now only read about 20-per-cent of my CD-Rs and none of my CD-RWs. But all my DVDs (single and dual-layered) still play all right.

I'm beginning to see now why Apex is now getting more criticism in these posts concerning the quality of their players as of late. I recently got rid of my 500W I bought back in 2001 and it was still performing OK. I've still got that 1100W I bought back in February 2002 and it still plays all my discs. As the price of Apex products drops, the quality seems to fall off as well.

I never dreamed I would have to say "the hell with Apex" several months ago. This weekend I bought two Norcent DP300s and they perform as flawlessly as my Apex 1200 originally did. I'm going to hold off for a month or so before I post any observations on that particular model. JAW

Higher bitrates tend to jam up this boy. I was really impressed with the price. Before I had a Toshiba Ad-1750 that wouldnt even play CD-Rs and I just HAD to get this. I really recommend it! It supports almost all general formats.

Got this at Sears for $59 (used a gift card). Yellow serial sticker. Starts with 'D'. Plays PAL DVD-R. This is the only reason I bought it. I have a Sampo 620 that doesn't support DVD-R (???) PAL playback has lots of artifacts as expected, but not too bad. The region hack where you continuously press the '1' button works. However, you cannot change the language or subtitles. Commercial and burned VCDs worked fine.

i dont know why everyone gets sooo upset about not playing a vcd wich mine does flawless and beautiful, however just burn the mpeg files to the cd forget the vcd. if you cant get any vcds to play why not and it seems as if pppl like the mpeg iso backup quality better when i show my vids. i own this model apex and the 1110 both are excellent players for a 50 spot

I'm a veteran creator of SVCD's using DVD2SVCD, TMPGenc at 2-pass VBR, with an average bitrate of 2k. They've played flawlessly on my old Daewoo 5000-N (Check it out), until the player died. Instead of spending money on repairs, I opted to buy a "cheap" replacement. And that is what I got... a Cheap player. It plays the SVCD's but the motion is very slightly choppy. Most people wouldn't notice, but in time it is apparent with every disc. Other reviews herein probably use lower bitrates, but I won't stoop to that. This player is going in a garage sale.

This is an incredible player for the price. Bought this for $50 at my local Wal-Mart. The Apex 1200 plays everything that I have thrown at it. My specialty is SXVCD and have not had any problems yet.

I see that many users here are having trouble with sync problems. Most of my movies are homemade and edited/exported from Adobe Premiere. I frameserve to TMPGEnc for encoding and use Nero to burn. Success every time! I have made about 50 discs. I have used Memorex CDRs & CDRWs as well as Imation CDRs and CDRWs.

This beats the hell out of my JVC XV-S65BK, which can only handle a SXVCD bitrate of only 1750K and no more. This is the first piece of home electronics I have bought other than a JVC and I am very impressed and literally shocked at the quality for the price.

Bought two last night at Wal-mart. They both play everything that I have thrown at them: VCD, SVCD,MPEG-2 ISOs, cheap CD-Rs and CD-RWs. Both had yellow serial number tags on the box and both serial numbers begin with "D".

Bought this baby at Wally World last night for $53.87. They had at least 100 units at the store I went to, half with yellow serial number stickers starting with "D", the others with a white sticker beginning with "T". I decided to buy a white-sticker "T" model, for I've heard the many negative things here and on the nerd-out site concerning the yellow-sticker unit's inability to play VCDs.

Plays all my VCDs and SVCDs flawlessly on all my numerous brands of CD-Rs and CD-RWs. I even played an experimental non-standard SVCD I burned many months ago that my old Apex AD-500W was unable to play well: an SVCD with 720x480 picture with vaiable bitrate of 5000kbps. My old Apex could not handle it and the picture kept breaking up, but my AD-1200 and my AD-1100W play this SVCD smoooooooooooooooth as silk!!

The remote is obviously not the greatest (I prefer the remote from my old AD-500W), though it is far less complicated than that of the AD-1100W, which was a true pain-in-the-butt to operate.

I think Apex may be re-introducing VCD capability on their machines but keeping quiet about it, or else I was just very fortunate to get one with true VCD support. Those of you contemplating getting an AD-1200 might want to get the unit in the white-sticker box with the serial number starting with "T", for your chances of getting one with VCD capability may be greater than that in a yellow-sticker box. JAW

If you are having trouble playing VCDS, make sure you burn them at 8x or below, usually if its done at 10x and above it doesnt work for me....goodtimes...

Some of my homemade VCD's on CD-R work fine, but some of them have this freezing and skipping of frames. The audio keeps going but the picture will freeze for a few seconds and then jump to the current frame. Can anyone explain this? Could this be a problem with colored CD-R's? I will try to verify this theory tonight. I'm pretty sure I'm using standard VCD paramaters for screen resolution, bit rate, audio, etc. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Im in love with this DVD Player, It plays all my VCDs and all my Svcds on any media, I have tried Mpeg1 and Mpeg2 ISO filles on DVD+r and DVD+rw and all work smashingly.. Does seem unnaturally loud when opening and closing.. but other than that an excellent deal for the price.. i paid 94.99 at Futureshop today in Ajax ontario (may be high, but thats how the cookie crumbles.!! )

For $45.50 USD ($69.99 CND) this baby plays it all! Plays ALL types of CD-R's with no problem. I dont know what 'noise' everyone is complaining about! Heck, the plastic tray goes in and out and goes "vvvrrrr - click" - Thats what trays do! The only time that the player is actually loud is when a cd is all bashed up with scratches and, like a cd player, the motor will spin the cd faster than normal to properly read it.

Its big, bulky and ugly but hell, for the price - why not!!! Quality is just like all the other players. Output connections are minimal. 2 Video outs as well as 2 Aux outs (left (white) and right(red)) and yes, a single S-video out. Remote has all the features that you need.

When going from menu to menu, the player goes a wee bit slow and 'pauses' to read the next section. Other than that, its all Gravvvy baby!

I have just purchased this today from Wally World. I bought it because my other stand alone would not play DVD-r (it was reported by this forum that it would, but to no avail. Maybe it was the media, becuase I tried severl different burning programs) anyway.. This $58 machine has played everything that I have put in it. Playd DVD-R, and DVD-RW with no problem. I got the one with the orange serial number tag, I do not know the difference, but apparently there is one. I think for the price, it is a great buy. It does have some cons; IT does feel real cheap, but then it is. I hope it does not die on me in the near future, but Wally World will take it back in the first 90 days after purchase, so I guess I'm ok. Over all a great deal for the money, and now I can play all of my SVCD and DVD-R disks.

DOA from Wally World B&M.

So I took it back and found an Apex AD1500 at Circuit City. I'll post a full review on that unit soon - I haven't finished testing all the features yet :)

I'm not complaining really - you have to expect lower QC when you're buying a $58 DVD player. But I would suggest to save yourself a return trip and test it in the store before you leave.

Well, I got this from Circuit City, and it has the yellow tag...so I'm not sure what to think right now. I'll test a VCD, mp3s and whatnot this weekend.
