I paid around $40 for this player about 6 months ago. It's never had a problem with any disc, including numerous DVD-R and DVD+R discs. Haven'd tried any recordable DL discs (which are still too dang expensive to bother with). Best of all, it converts PAL to NTSC extremely well.
It's not the most feature-packed DVD player, but it is a remarkably good one for the price.

Just picked one up for $38 last night at Walmart (model Apex AD-1145 June 2004 date stamp with no indication of firmware version. Box only lists serial number LF313075XXX as well as a sticker on back of the unit). Hooked up and played with it for an hour. Won't play SVCDs at all on CDR or CDRW media. Plays VCDs on either media with no problem tho. Poor menu system as compared to older Apex models...very limiting. No region hack or CSS/Macrovision disable hacks (yet) or modchip available for this model. It also has some tracking difficulties. Will play PAL DVDs and NTSC with fine output to my US NTSC tv, so that's probably good. It's "ok" but if you can get a Cyberhome CH-DVD 300 for the same price, go with that as you can make it multi-region/region free with a hack on the net. The Cyberhome doesn't play WMA but who even burns other than MP3s anyway? The Apex AD-1145 has a better remote over older Apex models (bigger) and better than my Cyberhome which has little buttons on it and seems fragile. It also has digital coaxial audio out and S-Video output. no built in 5.1 decoder with outputs (like some earlier Apex models did, such as my old AD-703).
Good if you just want a standard cheap player, but mine's going back as I can't make it region-free (I get regular discs from region 4 (Mexico/Central Am) and it won't play svcd or let you remove the CSS/Macro. No loopholes identified yet. Get the Cyberhome (also $38-40, but at SAMS CLUB). This one's going back. |

I picked this baby up at Walmart for $38 bucks and thought I'd test it out considering Walmart takes anything back. So far, they won't need to take this back :-). I think this is available at Walmart only because when you open up the box the first thing on top is a walmart ad for their new monthly unlimited dvd rental service. I tried 30 DVD-R's on it and every single one of them played. I also own an AD-1201 which is still reliable after over two years of service. Heres the breakdown of this player:
38 Dollars
MP3/WMA Support
DVD-R Support (Even with my cheap "Value Disc"
DVD-R's!)
Commercial DVD plays great
SVIDEO (I'm going buy a cable for this because everyone with an SVIDEO DVD player should use it due to better quality)
DVD/DVD-R Media loads actually within 10 seconds now which is better than my 1201.
FULL SIZE REMOTE CONTROL - NO MORE DINKY SHIFT BUTTON
Coaxial 5.1 Output With DTS Support!
AFF (16/9 --> 4/3 Conversion On The Fly)
Kodak/JPEG CD Support
Slick slim silver design makes it look more pricy than 38 bucks
Overall, if you need a DVD player that works and has a huge amount of features, yet costs only 8 dollars more than a freakin DVD by itself, buy this baby! I don't even see why people drop hundres of dollars for "Sony's" etc. This 38 dollar play even has 5.1 Coaxial support! Get over your Sony's, swing by Wally World, and buy this player! |
