Have owned this unit for about 1 year. Has been able to play anything I have thrown at it including SVCD's with menus / background video etc.
I have used various "cheap" CD-R Media with no problems. Good quality playback on commercial DVD's.
I mostly author with Pinnacle Studio 8, but have used VCDEasy and others.
I recommend it as an inexpensive, but versatile player. |

| Brought if from dabs.com for £57 inc VAT. Plasticy and a bit noisy during playback but plays anything you throw at it. Perfect player for anyone downloading mpegs of the 'net, watch them from the comfort of your sofa rather than the family crowding round the computer, get TMPGEnc to convert divx's to vcd/SVCD. I use Philips 80min CD-RW disks burned using VCDeasy - no problems so far. |

Bought this from Dabs.com for stg£49 [e75] based on reviews read here and elsewhere.
Very pleased with it's catholic constitution ;) plays just about anything I can throw at it, except divx. It also plays multiregion de-macrovisioned ntsc/pal without any problems or intervenion by me. I should say I've a PAL TV and while playing R1/NTSC DVDs looks better if I leave the Apex on auto [i.e. play R1s as if to an NTSC TV] if I wanted to tape to VHS I'd have to force the Apex to play the R1 DVD as an R2 but that's due to limitations with my VHS. All this is using the hacked firmware.
Three downers - [1] it can be a bit noisey at times, a quick eject/load fixes this [2] while the Apex supports 'zoom x2/4' I cannot get it to simply switch from 16:9 to 4:3 [3] I cannot fast forward/goto thru a standard copy to CD-R(W) mpeg file.
I've tried DVD-Rs [Verbatim] CD-Rs [noname & Imation 80min] CR-RWs [yamaha]. I tend to play fast & loose with VCD creation using TMPEnc & VCDeasy altering many settings, occassionally I go too far and the Apex dies but a simple power off/on fixes it. Usually (s)VCDs work OK with or without chapters. Sometimes if I include a splash/intro static image on the VCD the TV will just display a blank screen until I hit 'next' on the remote whereupon the VCD movie will play, hitting 'previous' will then display the splash screen - the splash screen displays OK on a friends midrange Sony DVD.
RSN I'll be testing the Apex with DVDs I've made myself. |

This player out of the box only plays "Legit" DVD's.
Will not play VCD's etc...
However get the firmware flash update (Approx 500Kb in ISO Format, burn it onto a standard CD-Pop the Cd into this player Firmware update will start automatically and follow on screen (simple) instructions) and Voila!
You now have a DVD player that will play everything you can throw at at.
Get this update NOW- this player with the firmware hack rivals my Pioneer DV646a for ultimate playability.
(ASDA in the Uk were selling them for Approx £60) |

Netherlands: Bought the 1100WB at Klein, Nieuwerkerk a/d IJssel, price: 75 euro.
Could not play a copy DVD (don't know + or -).
Bought the latest Golden Earring CD-album. It inheld a bonus DVD with three songs. This DVD did not work at all. It worked ok in other players. Thats why I went back to the store. The storekeeper told me that de laser was not that accurate. He was so kind to take the player back and sell me another. |

ok ,i'm going to be very humble and write a retraction ,i originally wrote "ok ,so i thought i'd buy a dvd player that plays everything blablablabla" ,ignore it ...............i have played dvd-r ,dvd-rw ,dvd+r ,dvd+rw .the reason i wrote slagging the unit off before was because the unit wont play phillips standalone unit dvd+r and rw .but ,if you want to play discs written on a pc dvd writer then consider this baby .i have written dvd+r/w on a nec nd-1100 ,and dvd-r/w on a pioneer a04 .have only used the verbatim discs and found them EXTREMELY good .
once again ,please dont buy this unit to play discs from philips set top writers as they wont play . but for pc based + and - r/rw material defianately . |

| ok.thought i'd get a player that plays everything ,had a look at the list on this site ,and read the comments from others etc .let me put it this way ,this is THE only player i have tried that wont play a finalised dvd+r recorded on a philips dvd recorder .and its the same story for dvd+rw .the things look like they will play but it actually hangs the machine .if you are after a player that plays it all DONT BUY THE APEX AD1100WB .also vcd's jump when they dont on my other machine(limitdvd9090 ,which wont play svcd's correcly)i dont know how on earth it made its way into the "plays +r and +rw section" but it dont .i repeat DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE TO BE ABLE TO PLAY ALL FORMATS.and yes ,i have done the firmware upgrade |

An absolute bargain!
dabs.com now stock this for £49+VAT and give you a direct link to the page that allows you to download the hacked firmware. This firmware upgrade removes macrovision, allows VCD playback (very peculiar, this - the unit will play SVCD out of the box, but not VCD) and makes the unit region free.
I've downloaded & authored several VCDs and SVCDs as well as a couple of KVCDs, all of which play flawlessly, allowing chapter selection and multi-speed fast-forward and rewind, as well as slo-mo and zoom/pan.
My unit is a little noisy, especially at spin-up, the build quality doesn't exactly reek of craftsmanship, but it's played everything I've thrown at it (both CBR & VBR MP3, too) without complaint.
For less than 60 quid, you can't complain!!!! Recommended! |

Bought from a local shop who flash them before they leave the shop. Plays eveything I can put inside have tested on vcd and svcd with loads of different disks even the cheap unbranded disk,s have tested with 4 typed of dvd disks and they all worked :-)

Firmware upgrade was a piece of cake. Nerd-out.com had all the info needed, and I was playing an SVCD 5 mins out of the box.
Currently I have only tried Vivastar and Imation CD-R but both work with no probs at all.

Bought from ASDA Scunthorpe just before they stopped stocking them. Got it at the discount price of £59.95, used the software upgrade from Mark H. (excellent thanks). Plays VCD's, SVCD's and I use the Jpeg picture viewer which for the price is excellent, even does wipes/slideshows etc.
Would recomend it to anyone,not the best looking box around, but great value for money.

This is the best little player I have purchased.plays everything.used bulk cdr and several branded disks no probs.works with princo dvd-r all generations-works with princo dvd-rw no probs.not too hot at playing mp3's though.also plays cdr/w.can fast forward and rewind on all discs(which i can't do on my philips 762!!)shame asda in uk discontinued it but heard they're replacing it with alba dvd-108 which is another cheap player that will play all formats!!!
ps don't forget to do the firmware flash
i done all my authoring and burning with spruceup(for dvd)primo dvd and nero 5.5.9.9 |

| Got my player from Asda in the uk.Seems fine, But only plays VCDs with the firmware upgrade disc. Unless you ask for the upgrade disc they dont supply it in the box. You only need put the disc in once and your DVD is upgraded. |

| I bought this player the other just what it is, Cheap and cheerful for the price and the fact i wanted a second dvd in the bedroom. When i found the firmwhere upgrade in installed it i was amazed so my lg has been relegated to the bed room. This is an excellent player for the price once you have flashed the firmware.
so far it has played everything I have thrown at it.
The thing I like about it the most is the noise, its so damn quiet compared to my Hitachi 505.
I have tried a 4 movie DVD-VCD on a DVD-R which played alot better then my 505, which had trouble with lip sync on one of the movies.
The apex plays Vcd's/SVCD's too with the firmware fix but you have to press 1 on the remote to get it going.
I flashed the firmware upgrade from a CDRW so they work too.
so far so good, will test with DVDRW soon.

Execellent player for the money, available at ASDA /WALLMART in the United Kingdom, pretty much plays everything that you throw at it. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a low-budjet dvd player. This player can also be upgraded to be region free, play vcd's and also remove macrovision. | not sure if this is for computer or tV but all apex dvd players I have are hooked to TV and are usually priced from $64 to $80 and so far has played any burned SVcd we have with no problems....That is only a one disk player though...and the only other thing is cant ff or rewind you gotta start if from begining to end but I would assume that depends on how the movies burned. |
