Have an orange tagged Apex 1200 DVD player.

Plays everything I can throw at it, rented DVd's, audio cd's, new and burnt, cd's with mp3's, cd's both single write and re-writeable as vcd and svcd, with or with out a menu as burnt in Nero, and cd's with folder after folder of jpg's.

Does all I want and for under 75 Canadian. Gotta like that !!!

Damn good player. Can't say one thing bad... oh yeah, except it chirps pretty loud when you're watching VCDs. The MP3 playback is pretty good, but if you want to watch MPEG video make sure it's a VCD; raw MPEG files don't work great with this player... with the one DVD-R i tried it did not work, but I don't know if it was just the brand or what. Anyways, great suggestion for a gift or for your own personal use.

Apex Digital is a joke. I purchased the AD-1000 from Walmart on 8-2-03, opened the box and discovered that there was no manual, warranty and the wrong remote!! went on to the Apex website and the AD-1000 is not even listed. Walmart said that it is not a return, contact Apex. Now I'll have to do battle with Apex customer service-DO NOT BUY ANY APEX PRODUCTS!!!

Well I managed to win this DVD player in a bar drawing so the cost was free to me. At first I had no problems with, in fact adding that is can be hacked is nice, but it takes at least some knowledge of a computer (but little) you can also change the background (fun but a lot of work). I have copied many movies after the macrovision was turned off, in fact around 100 movies. It is always nice to have a VHS copy of a movie, but the quality sucks on VHS. Recently I started downloading SVCD’s and VCD’s and found that they too play on the DVD player, but SVCD’s seem to freeze up a lot, usually once or twice during a movie up to 5 minutes a time, but afterward it seems fine.

Another problem it has, when playing the MP3’s it can take forever to load them, or sometimes it will stop, much like it does with SVCD’s. Also, it doesn’t have the RBG output only S-video. Otherwise the thing is great. It is a good first player, especially if you want to go cheap and copy movies.

plays many different DVD+R brands no problem(Imation,Memorex,Verbatim, maxell) I burn my DVD's w/DVD X Copy. The only one I had a problem w/was Sleepy Hollow. I burned w/the new copy of DVD X Copy Xpress. It stutters on the apex and doesn't support the subtitles. I tried another movie w/xpress and turned off the anti-virus, xp firewall, screen saver, & disconected my internet connection & the movie plays fine on the apex w/the sub titles now. I also use Ulead DVD picture show and burned VCD's & DVD's and they've played fine. Iv'e only tried 1 Memorex DVD+RW and Can't get it to work. Nor have I been able to get any CD-RW to work, but what the hell it was a christmas present. Can't complain too much

This has worked with every brand of cd-r's and cd-rw's i've used so far. I've used nero to burn all of my xVCDs and xSVCDs as well as standards too. Can't fast forward with SVCDs without losing audio video sync. Plays raw mpegs from data cd's, sometimes even non-standard files, not totally reliable but a nice added bonus.

Another cheapo DVD player from APEX, although loading times are just as fast as a Sony player. VCD 2.0 works great, but VCD 1.0 takes some time to load. MP3 is limited to 8 characters, and miniDVD does not always work (DO NOT count on this player for miniDVD!) It is suppose to play Kodak Photo CD - I have an early Kodak CD, but it does not work on this player. With no Optical audio out, you have to use the coaxial for DTS or AC3 playback. This player supports PAL and NTSC, but like other APEX units, expect this one to break down before its time.

I recently discovered that this player will play 320kilobit/sec mp3s. I also discovered that the player will play XSVCD decently with no skips @ around a bitrate of 4300kilobits/sec and using only 192kilobits per second audio (not 224kilobits per second like the SVCD standard). I also noticed that after awhile of playing DVDs one right after the other, the player suffers from the old plagues that haunted APEX players from their very beginning: video doesn't match up with the audio causing a person to look funny when their voice doesn't match up with their lips. I give it a much lower rating because of this, but the player still has a good side in that it plays almost whatever format you throw at it. Many players have superb picture processing quality as well as audio processing quality, but they cannot play back such formats as VCD or SVCD. By making this point also, I'm stating that I've seen many other DVD players on the market featuring higher quality video processing and audio processing for this unit, but this unit does make a good deal for a cheap buy.(If you don't want to spend close to $200 for perfect quality)

I've had this player now 1 and a half plus yrs now, I've probably put over 600 movies through it by now and counting a lot even when typing this now with a movie going. I've tortured this player with library borrowed DVD's. To my mints, to the movie's I move and sell on ebay. It takes a licking and keeps on ticking and I will buy the best available model of this brand from now on until it proves me wrong in not being one of the best on the market. Best starter DVD player of all.VCD plays perfect, Burned CD-R/CDRW should play fine,CD's I think SVCD but only if it is burned Mpeg format.

I've used almost all the brands of CD-R in this and it works completely, I wanted to update my old review but couldn't but anyhow, the previous review is wrong, the Apex AD-1000 fully supports SVCD, homebrew and original, as long as the SVCD was made right. It will accept MPEG-ISO, and loves MP3's. I can't seem to find a bitrate it won't play so I haven't yet tried all of them. I may make a test CD someday but I don't want to right now. =) Heck with Nero I can even put an MP3 in as a VCD track. It sounds good. =) Occasionally gets out of sync with VCDs or SVCDs but it is least likely to do so if:
A) Do not fast forward or rewind during S/VCD playback
B) The video was originally authored for S/VCD usage, ie NOT DivX, since most converted DivX movies are bad format no matter what converter you use (too much loss)

Great player!

Works AWESOME with my cheap $10 100 CD Spindle.
For best performence, burn AT OR BELOW 24x (3,600 kb/s)
using NERO BURNING ROM. My VCDs work awesome. Just wish it would support SVCDs. Great for anyone on any budget. Supports Angle, Zoom, Pal/NTSC multi support, and many other great features. No other problems, KICKS ASS! If you want one that supports Picture CDs, I would reccomend its updated-clone (although the remote REALLY DOES SUCK.) the AD-1100W. If you have a Wal-Mart that still sells these, this would be a great gift for you or someone else at the price of $59!

For your Regionless/Macrovision Disenabled Hack, go to:
http://www.dvd-wizards.com/darrenk/

Note: It only works with Serial Numbers that are A,C,D.

Wow. So... affordable... with really all the features anyone could need. There's $500 players out there that don't have half the format support this Apex DVD player does.

I havent tried SACD or DVD-Audio yet, hopefully they will work on this, too. If not, I DONT CARE. MP3s, SVCD, XSVCD, DVD+R/RW is all I care about, and will need. And I wont have to spend hundreds for it :)

I would recommend this dvd player to anyone interested in an affordable dvd player that does just about everyting. I've tested it with DVD-R and DVD-RW using the cheapest generic discs and they play flawlessly. I have also used the DVD+R and DVD+RW discs and they play great to. Plays dvd, vcd, and mp3, cd-r and cd-rw flawlessly as well.

I bought this DVD player to play VCD and SVCDs. When i got it home the VCDs were no problem, but it wouldn't play any SCVDs. Here is what i have found. Any SCVD I get in a Bin/cue format and burn will not play on this DVD Player, however if I use VCDGear and convert the Bin/cue file to an MPEG2 file the DVD player will play the SVCD with no problems. It is an extra step in the converting process but it has worked for me.

I tried a XSVCD with a bitrate of 4992kbps (4800kbps video and 192kbps audio) and which resulted in a 2 second studder. I then tried a XSVCD with a bitrate of 4800kbps (4608kbps video and 192kbps audio) and the result was that the video played successfully without slowing up or studdering. So, my final conclusion of the designated cdr/cdrw playback within the Apex AD-1000 model DVD player is approximately that of a 4-speed or 4x cd-rom. (4,800,000 bits per second or 600,000 bytes per second transfer rate) and not of a 3x or 3.5x as I had calculated earlier.

I tested a XSVCD copy of a musicvideo @ 4000kbps and it played perfectly. It didn't studder at all unlike that dude's post about it. I don't know why I said that it wouldn't support that bitrate, probably because I even paid attention to that post. LOL Now, I'm attempting to test it @ 4x 600,000 kilobytes/second or @ a bitrate of about 4,800,000. Wish me luck, and I'll post the results of my test.

P.S. Sorry about the comment I made earlier about not support the 4000kbps/second bitrate.

I took a musicvideo that was ripped fresh off of the DVD without any reductions and re-encoded it to XSVCD format with a bitrate of 3.6mbps and it played perfectly. I'm used to encoding SVCD with a maximum bitrate of 2.6mbps (2600kps). The image quality between the difference of 3.6mbps and 2.6mbps is a whole lot. I saw tiny bits of noise but it was a whole lot less than those of the 2.6mbps bitrate. I believe my estimate of the cdr/cdrw reader in the DVD to be around 3x was correct. (3,600,000bits divided by 8 bits which is equal to 1 byte)= 450,000 bytes/sec (150,000 bytes per second is equal to 1x cd-rom X 3)= 450,000 bytes/sec. I simply came to the conclusion not only by the math problem above, but because the bitrate of 4,000,000 bits/sec cause studdering in the motion of video which means the transfer rate is too slow for the transfer rate needed by the video.(500,000bytes/second)(just short of that transfer rate by around 50,000bytes/second)

Had to return the first unit because the remote didn't work. The remote worked for a few weeks on the second unit. I never realized how much I would miss the display on the unit until the remote died. It doesn't have an optical audio-out. And my biggest gripe now that I have a 40x cd burner, the AD1000 doesn't like generic cdr's burned above 24x. My old Pioneer player has no problem with them at 40x. There's something to be said for brands that have been around for decades. I still give the 1000 a 7 because it was dirt cheap and it plays mp3s.

This apex is one of the best players our there for (s)vcd. I use Verbatium cdrs/cdrws(high and low speed) and they play back fine. I had some issues with CompUSA's high speed cdrw(studders). I use xsvcd @4000 kbits/sec, usually there is a slight studder at the beginning of the track, but after that, the rest of the track/file plays fine. I just tested kwag's kvcd templates and work on this player. Any questions? Feel free to email me.
