SUMMARY:
Crappy manual, support, and remote-button layout/functionality. An Xmas 2004 $20 loss-leader "bargain," it's even more of a waste of money, today.
PRO:
Adequate player for VCD, SVCD, and MPG files (such as music videos) on a CD. No audio-sync issue noticed.
DEAL-KILLER CON:
Various brands of DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-R disks suffer AUDIO-SYNC LOSS (mouth moves...words delayed by a second) that will drive you NUTS.

| I have never had this thing reject anything I put in it. I havent tested all types of media and all types of combinations of format and media but it has ALWAYS played what I wanted it to. I purchased two of these at Bestbuy on black friday 11-29-03. For 20.00, it is the best DVD player I have every purchased and I have 7 throughout my house! |

There's no display on the front panel. No Lights to show what's going on, unless you see it on the screen, which seemds to be the problem when you play an audio cd. The "Standby" light is the only light that comes on the front panel. Which kinda is not good, because if you accidentaly leave the dvd player on, you'd not know unless you turn on the tv.
Apart from that the DVD player worked fine for the first 4 months, but seemd to skeip the DVDs thereafter. Lens cleaning hasn't helped. Its okay for a spare dvd player in the home, but not the primary one. The price seems to be okay for the quality. |

Bought at FUTURE SHOP before Xmas for 50$ CAN, kept it for a week then I returned it and bought a JVC XV-N44SL.
Here's what I found about this player:
- When I played any DVD it lost audio synch 5 min. after starting the movie.
- It crapped out on a lot of my SVCD (wich play fine on the JVC).
- Poorly design remote control
- The only good point is that it played raw mpeg files that I had on CDs.
I guess that you always get what you pay for. |

This player is super cheap and plays just about anything you can throw at it. However, one thing none of the other reviews deem mentionable is the fact that the audio capabilities of this player are EXTREMELY limited.
Watching virtually any DVD Movie is a painful experience. People sound as if they're underwater. When no dialogue is occurring, the background sound is distorted and grainy.
DO NOT BUY THIS PLAYER UNLESS YOU DON'T NEED AUDIO! As for me, well, I'm stuck with two of these useless boxes. |

I have done limited testing but;
Played Jurassic Park DVD-R (cheapie) to chapter 17 then froze and wouldn't continue.
There is no audio on trailer of Christmas Vacation...not even on original copy. Same DVD works okay in 4 year old Sylvania.
MP3's seem to play okay but file names are truncated.
Same model that a friend purchased right after Christmas lost audio/video sync on Sea Biscuit in mid-chapters. So far mine is okay.

Hey Everyone,
Bought this one along with Aspire AD-900 for $49.99 at Futureshop, this isn't a bad player, but doesn't compare to the AD-900 for the same price.
My biggest complaint is that the skip and ffwd/rew buttons are the same for the remote so you need to press and hold to skip tracks.
It played VCDs, some MPEG files (not all), DVDs, MP3, WMA and the audio of WMVs.
The menu system is kind of spartan and not that nice to look at, also changing tracks for audio CDs is a pain without the tv on so it wouldn't make that great a cd player.
It wouldn't play the second track on a 2 track dvd - there was no menu or link to second track however.
Also, MPEG files seemed to skip for the first 2-3 seconds.
Overall, I'd keep it if I couldn't have gotten the AD-900 for the same price, it's not bad, but could be improved. |

At first, the V99 seemed like a great buy. But, I found it CANNOT PLAY AUDIO on Volumes 14+ of the Twilight Zone DVD collections. Other players I own play these discs perfectly. I tried two of these V99s, and both exhibit the same problem.
I can only guess it will have the same problem with other DVDs. |

I am trying to find a region hack for this player.
Posted some pics here

Seems like this player has the following chipset
Sunplus
SPHE8200A
Also this player supports dual voltages 110 - 220 v for anyone interested.

Also picked this up the day after Thanxgiving from Best Buy for $19.99 after rebate. To my surprise, it plays selectable CVD subtitles on SVCD.
Here are the tests I have done:
* SVCD with selectable (C)CVD subtitles and chapters made with DVD2SVCD and burned with Nero. VBR up to standard bit rate.
* SVCD with animated menus and chapters made with Pinnacle Studio 8. CBR at standard bit rate.
* DVD -R (Imation) made with DVD Decrypter ripped to ISO and burned from ISO.
* DVD +RW (Sony) with menus and chapters made with Pinnacle Studio 8.
* VCD video with menus made with Pinnacle Studio 8.
* VCD photo slideshow with menus made with Ulead DVD Pictureshow.
* Data CD with only JPEG files.
* Data CD with only MPEG files.
** NO (S)SVCD subtitles.
** NO component video output.
All and all, I am extremely pleased with this machine, so far.
NOTE: I also bought a Polaroid DVP-1000 from Best Buy ($49.99 - $10 rebate). Internally, it is exactly like AMW v99, even got the same remote. The difference is the case and component video output which the AMW v99 lacks.
NOTE 2: The AMW v99 is different than the AMW ABT S99. The region free hack does not work on it.

First, I picked this up for my 3 year old for her room, I paid $19.99 from Best Buy Thanksgiving Sale.
I gave it a 10 cuz so far for what I paid it has been worth every penny (so far).
Very basic player for external features (no lights, display, etc) hey it was $19.99
Played my backed up movies DVD+R Verbatims.
Played my VCD's just fine, no sync issues Verbatim Blues.
Played my SVCD's just fine, no sync issuesVerbatim Blues.
And ofcourse it played real DVD's just fine so far.
If I try MP3's or Jpgs I'll add anothercomment. |

I wanted a backup system in case my apex ad-1500 should die, since i have a nice sized collection of region 2 dvds. I got these cute and slim little
system the day after Thanksgiving for $29 and now Im watching my favorite european discs! Nice little remote control sequence to unlock region, unlike my apex, which had to be flashed. Very right on! Surprised to see it plays mpegs burned as data --- and I just fast forwarded times 20! |

Good for watching movies but not good for watching VCD's or SVCD's. All disks that I tried played, but after a few minutes, the audio will not match the video. (It's not my burning/capturing process the same disks do not do this in other players) Good for short media clips but not usefull for longer tv shows or movies.
Played all dvd-r/rw that I tried just fine.
Manual says it supports wma format however the one file I tried did not work...I do not use wma files often so it may have been the file and not the player.
SVHS, RCA, and coax output only. No Component video output. No optical output.
MPG playback off of data cd's. This does work as long as the bitrate is not too high. The file I tried broke up and was choppy. The file would not play at all on the Malata player I was testing at the same time.
MP3 playback will start upon inserting a disk without the need to turn on the TV.
Power indicator goes out a few seconds after unit goes on.
OK quality remote but has buttons for alot of features you would normally never need to change once set.
Unit has alot of extra toys on it, however some may not be overly usable for anything
equalizer with presets and manual adjustment
audio pitch adjustment
zoom feature will zoom in, as well as out, producing a small picture on a black background
jpeg slideshow with selectable transitions
Coaxial output supports both Dolby Digital and DTS formats.
NTSC, PAL, and PAL60 video output, selecatble via remote.
Picture preference control including brightness, contrast saturation etc on DVD player.
Wide selection of menu languages.
Handy resume function if power is turned off while playing...remembers your spot in the movie.
Overall not a bad player for general movie watching, alot of features that may or may not be usefull to the average user. Do not recommend for VCD's or SVCD's due to audio synch problems. |

| Bought at Future Shop for Cdn $60.- sleek design. But as most simple machines, no displays light on front. Even power light only lights up briefly when turning machine on. Had some problems with some older mp3 cds, but current ones played ok. Also plays mpegs. Good deal. |
