| Great DVD player -- plays everything I've burned except for 1 dvd-r which turned out to be a burning problem anyhow. Really cheap for the features it has, too.. $25. Even plays the older VCDs that my (more expensive) DVD player wouldn't play. |

Everything I've thrown at it worked great, although the picture quality is a bit below par (what do you expect for $39?) It seems like a fairly solid unit for the price, better than my (now dead) Cyberhome.
PAL->NTSC works like a charm, although sometimes it takes a bit for the disc to load.
The Region Hack worked just fine.
For a cheap PAL-NTSC it's perfect if the region hack works on your firmware. |

The rating is 8 out of 10 in regards to price/performance/features/quality ratio.
First of all, the things I don't like:
1. The video quality isn't too great. The colors are kind of messed up. Some movies look OK, others aren't too great. I haven't found a good way to adjust color balance.
2. There is no 1-frame forward feature - only slow playback. Slow playback cannot be activated from the pause. Rewind and Fast Forward cannot be activated from the pause.
3. Zoom can be 2x, 3, 4x - but then there is also 1/2x, 1/3x, 1/4x - what's the use of that? It's kind of annoying to have to flip through all of those modes.
Now to the parts I love (and the reason I gave this player 8 out of 10 rating):
1. It plays unauthored MPEG1/2 files from your CDs and DVDs. I have several TV tuner cards that can capture MPEG2. So what I do is capture TV in MPEG2 on my computer. After that I copy the MPEG2 files to a DVD+RW (with my DVD burner) - and tada! I don't have to make my MPEG2 SVCD or DVD compiant. The only problem I saw so far - MPEG files need to be less than 1GB in size! If you MPEG files are more than 1GB in size, you will only be able to view the first 1GB of the file. Also, not all of the MPEG files will show up if you have files more than 1GB in size. So cut you MPEG before trying to play it. There is a free utility at http://mpgtx.sourceforge.net/, and someone mentioned MPEG2Cut? There are some commercial utilities you may want to check out including TMPGenc and Womble MPEG2VCR.
2. Playing JPEG pictures from any CD/DVD is pretty cool, too. There is nothing special to do. Just copy the files as is. This is very nice!
3. It plays all my DVD-Rs, DVD+Rs, DVD-RWs, DVD+RWs, VCDs, SVCDs, etc. Never tried CVDs or XVCDs.
4. It fast forwards/rewinds at 32x. Nice feature to examine a DVD(-/+R) to make sure there are no defects. Also nice to zip through commercials in my recorded TV shows (recorded on my computer - see item 1 above).
So the summary is - some very cool features, very cheap, but not great video quality. If this player will last over a year - I will be very satisfied. As someone mentioned - this makes a very nice second DVD player that can play about anything you can think of. Use a nice one (Pioneer, etc.) for good quality playback for everything else. |

| Just to add to a review I did a few months ago. I've loved this unit for the past few months, however I happen to plug in my Panasonic RV32 I've had in the closet for some time and was shocked at the video quality difference. The colors and clarity of the Panasonic blows away the AMW. A Panasonic, Sony or other named brand is going to have a lot better video quality. Now I use my Panasonic 95% of the time and only use the AMW for disks the Panasonic won't play. Just goes to show you get what you pay for. |

I love this player! This is my third DVD player and I can't believe the amount of features it has for the price.
My favorite thing are the JPEG features, the V101 is great for viewing pics from you camera on the TV. I shoot all of my pictures in a 4-megapixel format; the player plays them flawlessly and quickly. One great thing is that you can rotate or flip pics while viewing if you forgot to do so before you burnt the disc.
JPG-DVDs work but only to a point. You must put the JPEGs into folders of about 200 each. Then you can only view a slideshow of what is in that folder.
MP3-CDs work great too! There is only one problem I have with them, if you would like to skip a song you must use the menu on screen. The forward button is used for a next page feature.
I tried to make a DVD-MP3 disc and was very disappointed.
DVD-R videos have all worked for me, every brand I have tried. The down side is that it is hard to tell what will work on other machines.
I bought this for about $33 after a rebate originally. A couple of weeks I saw a returned one at Circuit City and snatched it up for $25.
Unbelievable! I paid $500 for my first DVD player 5 years ago.
Great Player for next to nothing but don't expect the world, this is a $30 player for god's sake.

| So far it has played everything I have thrown at it.. DVD-RW/+RW, MP3, various brands, even el-cheapo CompUSA DVD's. Only negative is that it has no composite audio out or optical out; just two audio out, one video out and one svideo out. On screen menu very intuitive. Can't see how you can beat it for only $34.99 + tax. I have an expensive Sony 5 disc DVD player that will play DVD-/+RW and cd-audio but won't touch MP3's or SVCD or CDR. I'll continue to test it out with other stuff and update the rating. |

| i've been able to play vcd and svcds on tdk, sony, fujifilm, valuedisk cdrw 650 mb, tdk crdw 700 mb, and audiobahn cdr's. i hate the audiobahn and sony cdr's they play ok but scratch very easily. i paid $35 at circuit city. i bought one for me and one for my best friend. the only thing i haven't been able to play consistently is mpeg's not in vcd or svcd format. (is that called unauthored?) i would recommend to anyone especially for the price. i have no real complaints. |

The V101 is a great DVD unit. I bought it mainly to perform PAL/NTSC conversion, which it does flawlessly. I have had no problems what so ever with this player. It plays all my VCD's, SVCDs, DVD-R's. I have used the following DVD-R media without a problem: compusa (1x princo and optodisc) & verbatim 2X, Also plays verbatim DVD+R. They were all burned with my Sony DRU510A, using DVDdecrypter or CopytoDVD.
It has played everything I have thrown at it so far, my vcd/svcd's are on dozens of different cd-r media.
The fast forward/rewind works cool with the 2x, 4x, etc.. my older Pioneer players don't work like that. The only complaint I can give it would be there is no LCD panel on the front to show you any information (but that aint all that important i guess)
Purchased at Circuit City in So. Cal. for $35, so I didn't have much to loose. I went back to get another one, and it looks like they don't sell this unit anymore. Buy one if you can find one!!

| Well I liked it when I got it, as I burned VCD 2.0 with menu and that didn't play in lot of players I tried, and it played. But now I have a problem. When I play DVD I notice brightness fluctuation. Sometime brightness goes up and some time it goes down and become dark and goes up again. I don't have S video cable so I can't try that. Is there is any setting I need to do ? The manual never explain what each set up items means. Also, in set up, under General, TV display is disabled ( why ? is this normal) not only that I can never go to Preference Setup, after video, the control come back to general set up ( is this normal too ?). I may exchange and get another one. |

In my tests I used a Memorex 700meg/80min CD-RW,
and a Ritek 2.4 DVD+RW burned with Nero 5.5.10.50. I ran the NTSC SVCD tests and could not get menus, subtitles or any alternate audio tracks to work. I have not tried SVCD menus made with Nero yet.
Doing the SVCD PAL test Subtitles and both sound tracks played correctly. I found that really odd considering I'm in the USA.
The user guide totally SUX, but what do you expect for $35.00 |

I would give it 10 if it was region free. I tested mine out with Region 2 DVD. It would say wrong region. However, if you continously press 1, it will play, but you lose all remote+button control. So basically you can't plan any Region 2 movies or scroll around the menus. Pure and simple shame. To the person that said it worked right out of box. Can you press 1379 on your remote while in Setup and tell everyone here what region does it display?
Thanks. |

This a reply to whom asked how to play region 6 DVDs. It worked out of the box, I didn't do anything with it. However, I did verify that the DVD was region 6 by using SmartRipper/ffdshow, which I could not play it on my $300 Sony/Panasonic DVD players.

Just bought one of these at Circuit City for $35 plus local taxes. So far it's played back Princo 1x DVD-R, RiTEK 1x DVD-R and TDK 2x DVD-R movies. The TDK media doesn't even work in my Brother's $220 Sony progressive scan multi-format DVD player. I've also tested it with CMC Magnetics and Taiyo Yuden CD-R media for SVCD and MP3 playback. It has a nice on-screen viewer for MP3 navigation too. It looks similar to Windows Explorer.
The unit looks pretty cheap but for $35 I'm not expecting it to have a BMW logo on it. It works. And better yet, it supports many different formats including DVD-MP3 and DVD-Audio. The only thing that it doesn't seem to support is DivX and it's a single disc unit. I can live with that, especially for 35 smackers!! |

Basic DVD player, no component. Remote is basic but functional.
Played vcd/svcd, BUT some SVCD's had audio/video skip, burned sd-6 enterprise 3x04 and very blocky picture, settled down after a few mins. My backup of 2fast 2furious on svcd CD-R had major audio/video sync problems.
Picture defects on some svcd's blurry tones at times.
Played ISO CD's that had mpg files recorded on them, no problem.
Some neat features with DVD player, 32x FF/REW, and skip works on some vcd/svcd's, zoom is 4x, not bad.
Menu system ok, sometimes stalls in the middle of playing vcd/svcd's whilst you change contrast/brightness.
Paid $40 at Circuit City, bringing back to them today as it faulters on my svcd backup's of my DVD collection. |
