Here's a little tip for newbeeies.....player works well with vcd's and doesn't require any codes to play but the player is particular about the encoding you use, if the player doesn't play your vcd then re-encode and use a program like roxio's vcd creator to varify the vcd.

It plays everything i got without a grumble
And it even came with a scart lead.
Just a brilliant bit of kit that happens to be really cheap

Comments:
There is an unofficial firmware that is supposed to remove the macrovision at: http://www.powerglitch.com/update.html
I've updated my player but gave my video to my girlfriend so can't test it.

Anyone having trouble with disc playing in B&W should try:
1. pressing the display button with no disc in
2. Selecting 'Display' from the menu
3. Setting Prefered Video Standard to 'Content specific'.

I've had trouble playing some DVD-Rs writen with Nero 5.5~, but these discs worked fine on my girlfriends Mustek though. They worked for me when I tried writing the VOBs with ImgToolBurn (a few plug-in for Nero), but then they refused to play in my girlfriends player. Next I tried CloneDVD and they worked fine in both :o)

I hope this helps some people. Not a bad player (we have 3 in my house), the remote is nasty though.

Positives:

- Plays VCDs and SVCDs VERY well, no audio sync problems. Quality is very good, menu system is very easy to use and set out in a logical manner.
- The on screen interface is clear, easy to access and well set out.
- It supports the formats I’ve tested so far fully, by this I mean, it tells me i'm playing a SVCD when I put one in or VCD or DVD:
It doesn’t tell me everything is a CVD or some other 'weird' message like some players, no stupid remote hacks needed to play disks either.

- Grabbed this neat little player from Argos for £49.99 advertised as the 119, but its a 114 in the box. The 114 is Region free out of the box, plays everything i've thrown at it very nicely.

I had a Samsung before this, which, although it looked expensive, lost audio sync and the menu system wasn't nearly as good.

- Track search and disk search supported with a full number pad on the remote. i.e. 'Skip to 10:31 into the disk, or even an individual track' of a VCD, SVCD or DVD is no problem'
Number pad is hidden under slide door of remote, which makes the remote a bit neater.

- Player is small, its slimline, and the CD draw has a smooth action and feels solid (unlike the UMAX player on Ebuyer, which the unit is huge, and feels like I could break the tray if I put too much pressure on the tray)

- The player looks nice, sits very nicely on top of my video mat silver finish with small neat buttons in same colour on the front.

Next week my DVD writer comes, I expect no problems as I have read the other reviews which suggest it supports both DVDR- and DVDR+.

Negatives:

- The remote is tacky, Its a cheap silver plastic and looks like a cheap prop out of Star Trek. The remote is very functional, the buttons are responsive and it has a good range, too bad it looks like I should be fixing the warp core with it;)

Conclusion:

Buy this player, it will play everything WELL, and its very easy to operate, unlike some cheap players. The remote is functional and operates the player well, but looks a bit naff.
I'm keeping this one, and i'm not an easy guy to please;)

Brought player from Argos for £48.75 but SCART output has humming noise on it, S-Video seems ok though, but must take it back.

Picture quality is good and sound ok when not humming during quiet moments

Hopefully a replacement will resolve issues.

Originally was to buy the DVD119 from Argos for £49 for mother-in-law, but they gave me the DVD114 instead.

It's definitely cheap looking, but the features of player, are very good. Picture quality and sound quality are good, but enough of this, to the features..

I looked for a player to do everything my players do, so that can get all sorts of films playing. To find one so cheap was a bonus.

Took everything I threw at it, and surprisingly was multi-region from the box. Tried vcd/svcd/mp3 and even DVDs and they all worked.

As said before multi-region from the box, no hack required, but I bet that there may be instances where you need to put the hack in. It's on here, and it works..

All in all, have acheived the impossible, the mother-in-law is happy.

Enjoy

Small update on posts I have made previously. Just burnt a few DVDs on DVD+RWs to test and they work perfect. They would play in my Alba DVD108 that I have (DVD114 is the main DVD player for the house). Yeah, perfect, no errors. Tools used:

Drive: NEC ND-1100A (Dell OEM version)
Media: Philips 2.4x DVD+RW
TMPGEnc - MPG Conversation
IfoEdit - MPG > VOB
Nero 5.5.10.5 - Burning (DVD-ROM UDF method)

I'll test DVD+R and some cheaper discs soon enough ...

Just bought the 114 model from Argos today at £70. I already have an Apex 1100wb that does everything, but was having difficulty in obtaining another.

Next choice was the Alba 108, but after various comments was wary of landing up with the 108xi model ( much less functionalty ). Anyway ordered the 108 and the Argos man produced ..... a 114 model.

Hadn't read up on this one, but took a chance and bought it. Well pleasesd, it played a DVD+R disc first time with no messing about ( eg hacks, etc).

I will try out various other media and report back, but later on as its for a present.

There is a solution to the "no sound SVCD" for owners of older players - just burn the .mpg SVC file as a VCD and the sound comes out fine and the quality is as you would expect with SVCD.

In nero just create a normal VCD and then hit the "turn off compliance" when you load the SVCD file.

This must therefore be a bug with the firmware - but as I only ever use SVCD's that I create I'm not that fussed.

Final thing is that I've found it fussy with some unbranded CDR's and burning at over 16x speed. I use princo and they seem to be fine (although strangly you have to "pop open/close" the VCD sometimes to get it it recognise the VCD....

Bought my dvd 114 today from Argos. Region free straight out of the box, no need for a hack. Those that reported problems with B/W picture on Region 1 disks should be aware that there is a menu setting of "content specfic" that should be selected instead of the default "PAL".
Plays all my DVD-r/rw disks all makes (TDK, bulkpaq, mirror, unbranded etc.
Well pleased with the performance.

Had this system for some time now (before xmas). Cost me about £85 but obviously the prices were high for the xmas rush. Has now dropped much more since.

It plays everything i have thrown at it perfectly exept i have no sound on the SVCD;s as a few others have stated. Luck of the draw with the models age alledgedly. I dont use SVCD so i dont care about it.

VCD's play perfectly everytime on any disc, cheap or expensive.

I started buying Region 1 DVD's online from America almost on the days they arrived in the cinemas here. Got The Ring last week and it played extremely well. Not black and white like some numbnuts keep saying. Thats to do with your TV.

I specifially bought a Daewoo TV from Tescos that was NTSC and PAL complient. Pictures are great especially the Region 1's.

All in all the player is great and does what i want. Yes the remot is uglier than my rectum but it does what its supposed to do and i cant remember the last time i showed off my remote control collection to anyone so who cares. Go buy it and enjoy.

Roadstar DVD-2019 is being sold by Argos instead of the Roadstar DVD-414 which one poster seemed to think was the same as the Alba DVD-414. Anyone know if it is basically the same machine or not? - the 2019 has the same cosmetic layout as the Roadstar DVD-414.

Small update on the Alba DVD114. Argos now stock this player with its own catalog number, but its called a "Roadstar DVD114". From the picture found in the book (pg 861), there is no difference to the play. Once I take back my old Alba DVD108 for the sole reason it can't search through SVCDs (gets annoying after a while), I will purchase this player and give a report.

Bought the Alba 108 last week from Makro - utter garbage! Wouldn't play any of my DVD+R, and awkward hack for my VCD/SVCD. Took it back and got the 114 - same price (£58, roughly $80 including tax). What a difference! The 114 plays all my DVD+R (recorded on Sony DRU120a - Datawrite/Ricoh/Intenso media), DVD+RW, VCD/SVCD - out of the box! No hack needed. Can't ask for anything more!
Recommended budget buy.

Just purchased alba 114 from MAKRO in Edinburgh - £58 incl VAT. First impressions excellent player and well worth the money. It plays VCD and SVCD straight out of the box no hack required and I have tried some very cheap copy discs - picture quality and sound first class.

Plays multi region straight from the box as well.

Tried my different dvd types and no problems yet.

All in all a great player and certainly less fussy than the toshiba player I had previously.

Darren, I actually have two of these and can back you up, cause one has this problem. (No sound on SVCD) It seems to be an older model too cause there are slight differences. The problem unit doesnt have the bitrate meter when you press disply during playback. Looks like older firmware, I would take it back and replace it if I were you, my working model came in a white box if that helps. Anyone know of any firmware updates? (cause I lost the reciept!)
