Picked one up from Argos, took a bit to figure the VCD/SVCD thing with the menu and 1 buttons (and my timing isn't spot on yet)
But overall a very good player, I've thrown allsorts of VCDs and SVCDs into it with no problems (provided the VCD itself is fine).
for £70 I can't get vexed. |

Great little player pitty Argos doesnt sell it anymore they sell the 108xi now which i found out yesterday when i bought it for my mother. I could not get vcd or svcd to play on it plus none off the hacks work, I took it back got ma money back and bought the pacific dvd1002 from asda for £70 and it plays everything with out a hack..

| To play vcds, on this superb dvd Alba 108, I just press 7 on the remote repeatedly, and it works fine, you dont need to time it, as the disk inserts or anything, as soon as the drawer closes just keep pressing seven untill your vcd menu appears. and, hey presto,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, |

On reading all the other comments concerning this superb player I decided to get one.
Argos provided the Alba 108 at £69.99.
Couldn't wait to get it home I have two other player a grundig & crown, neither playVCD's
Once unpacked used previous advice crack 2812
Worked fine, can't wait to try other media.
Seems to be probably the best cheapest dvd available in UK. |

Like most here, I bought this from Argos about a month ago after reading its reviews here. When I went they told me the player would be different, but I asked them to see if they had any of the originals in stock and they did, so I got the DVD108 :)
Basically, it plays everything I have thrown in it. The only flaws with the player is that it doesn't have a power button on the remote control, and that the search function doesn't work on SVCDs (well, at least the ones I have burned). No problems with audio syncs at all, which a friend's VCD player (from Hong Kong) did have on some of my VCDs.
Also note that Argos are now giving out DVD108xi (as detailed in the last report). My parents went to buy the 108 or 114 (which ever Argos gave them) and came back with the 108xi, which is practically unusable. It DOES play VCDs (it has a VCD light on the screen), but it doesn't play them out of the box and none of the 108 hacks work on it. We've now got the player changed for a 114 model, which I have also reported on.

Alba DVD108xi
The "DVD108xi" model of this unit appears to be a newer version of the DVD108 . I would not recommend the xi againts the normal one.
This unit was supplied by Argos instead of the listed DVD108. It won't play anything other than mp3 and dvd (I don't have any dvd-r, dvd-rw etc, so they weren't tested).
Plays DVD well though.

| Just bought one from Argos £69.99, after visiting this forum. Used 2812 crack and plays all my vcds svcds that I tried. At this price you cant go wrong. Not tried other region dvds yet but if 2812 crack works for vcds then I expect one of the cracks for region change/free should work. JDG |

| i have been following this thread for a few days and decided this dvd 108 was for me. got down to argos and was told it had been replaced by alba dvd-114, i nearly didnt buy it but i am glad i did because it plays vcd out of the box, no hack needed , and it is the same price as the 108, bargain. |

| This superb DVD player wich I bought from argos, for a mint valuue of 69.99 has played everything thrown at it, and the menu 111 cheat to play vcds is ok, but I found a better way, which doesnt need any timing, as the tray closes just press 5 repeatedly or seven and hey presto, you dont even need to time it for that, it just brings up the vcd menu and then press 1 to play..................... |

I got this player like most people from ARGOS for £69.99 after reading this forum, great value. It's plays VCD's and SVCD's no problem with the '2812' secret menu hack as follows :
1. Open the disk tray
2. Place VCD/SVCD in tray
3. Press the code 2812 then press the enter key (the secret menu appears)
4. Manually close the disk tray (do not use the remote or the button on the panel)
5. Wait a few second and and the stop 'sqaure' icon will appear in the top left.
6. Press 1 and away you go
this has worked every time on all my VCD's and SVCD's better than the menu 11111111111111111111111 hack :o)

Just to add to my previous report, everything
I tested also works with cdrw.
Also, it is multi region out of the box, plays
all my american dvd's with no problems.
p.s. I used the 2812 hack for all the results,
how this was discovered is beyond me. |

I bought it today from Argos online £69.95
(because when I went to the shop
I was offered the dvd109 model, so I didn't
risk taking something which has no reports.)
VCD worked at 2000KBit/sec, didn't test further
SVCD worked up to 4000 KBit/sec 480x576 CBR (VBR not checked yet)
SVCD also worked at 352x576 at 4000 KBit/sec CBR & VBR
All above results were carried out with 80m CDR's of the cheapest quality
Plays also at 5000KBit/sec but with freezes
Auth soft: VCDImager
Burning soft: CDRDAO
Value for money it is 10 out of 10 |

Bought this from Argos for £70 about 2 months ago, and am very pleased with it.
The 2812/Enter/maunually close the door/1 hack works much better than keeping on pressing 1 or 1 and GOTO -which I found unreliable, taking up to 6 or so times before a disc was read.
Has played every disc I've tried so far - mostly burnt with Nero on Datasafe media. Surprisingly, it doesn't seem to like discs made with VCDEasy - it won't recognise any chapters I put in.
SVCDs are problematic - mostly I can access the different audio and subtitles, but sometimes not. Plus I've had a few SVCDs that have had no time display - I can only play them from start to end, without being able to stop, pause or fast forward.
The sound quality on MP3 playback is just about tolerable, but seems worse when I feed it from the phono outputs to my amplifier. |

Press OPEN - input 2812 - press ENTER - 'secret' sytems menu will be displayed. Place VCD in tray - close tray MANUALLY (do not use remote control) - the VCD will be recognised and the 'STOP' icon displayed on screen - now simply press '1' to play the VCD.

Although this is not a permament hack for VCD, it is something interesting that I discovered last night !
I was bought the Alba DVD 108 in Spetember for my birthday. After looking at the Argus catalogue, I too noticed that the model in the picture said that it was SVCD compliant. Excellent ! I had managed to gather a multitute of VCDS and was playing them on an old VCD player and this was the perfect opportunity to Upgrade the machine without loosing my movies. So I sat back and was prepared to watch a VCD - INCORRECT DISK FORMAT ! Bugger !
I have been following this thread since September. I have tried all the available hacks listed but last night I decided to have a look in the 2812 Secret Menu. Once I opened the menu, I accidently closed the tray (manually- not using the close button or remote) with a VCD on board. The player loaded the disc and the Stop icon appeared. I then pressed the GOTO and entered 0000 and guess what - IT PLAYED ! I couldn't believe my eyes - I checked through about 30 VCDS and they all worked. I know that this is not the Permanent solution we are all looking for, but it's better than trying the annoying GOTO hack !
This does work!!!
and is considerably easier than any of the other VCD hacks... |

For info,
I (and a few others it seems) have gone to Argos, and have been given a substitute (Alba DVD114)
so check out the reports on that too, and save youself any worries in the store. I only got it yesterday, but evidence suggests it too is a cracker,
and it plays VCD/SVCD without any messing (no hack required) |

i have had this player for a few months now after hearing all obout it right here and making my mind up to buy 1 there and then!!
it plays all crappy blank types that i have put in it and plays very good quality vcd-svcd. it also try's it's bets to correct errors on some vcd's!! and it does so in some cases!!
the press 1 cheat is realy anoying some times!! but it works so what the hell!!
just 1 more thing though!! when the press 1 trick doesent work and u see the incorrect disk format come on the screen u can just press the eject button on the remote and it wont eject the disk!! onece the on screen display disapears just do the 1 trick again till it works!! this saves loads of time!!!
p.s. GTA 3 for PC is so much better than the PS2 version!!! as are all pc games!! |

ALBA DVD108
Just purchased one from Argos. The design has been changed so that no SVHS and no optical digital outputs are fitted. Just SCART + 4 phonos for SPDIF, Video, L&R audio.
I think the keyboard hack has also changed in some way. I found to get it to work on VCD/SVCD disks I had to alternately press 2121 in the time that the disk was being scanned after the drawer closes, otherwise the disk was rejected as incorrect format.
The MP3 folder display (truncated filenames) is quite informative, compared with some other players that handle MP3's
MiniDVD disk declared incorrect format, but kept trying to read it and wouldn't let me open the drawer. Had to switch off and back on, then open the drawer before the disk was recognised to get it out.

| Bought this player today after reading all the comments here.But I have to say this is a load of s##t it did not play anything I put into it apart from svcd's using the hack.The only good point was the size of the unit hence the only point I gave it.I promptly returned this card board box a got another player.verdict:rubbish. |

€129 from Argus Ireland. Region free out of box.
Macrovision ON. Possible sound level issue through phono conxns, but OK thru scart. No other probs yet.
VCD intentionally disabled in firmware but can be played by remote hack in the few seconds as VCD spins up after drawer closes. Press goto 1 1 1 1 1 Enter or press Menu 1 1 1 1 1 Play
Permanent hack may be possible through a secret system menu & unknown combination of 4 digit codes with settings
Press OPEN 2812 ENTER to access systems menu (2pages)

DVD-R/RW do play but the picture frezzes every few minutes and sometimes stops before the end. I am not sure if this is because of the cheap media I am using(White Label). DVD-RW discs play better for some reason.
