CVD? $? over 1 year 9 of 10 JPG/JPEG DivX Comments: Had the player for about 2 years and the only problem is that i cant find a vcd/svcd hack that works. Will play dvd+/-r discs (bulkpaq, datawrite, datasafe,tdk, packard bell). The player was multi-region straight out of the box. Friend at work wants a player for everything and i recommended he gets a alba as i've never known any problems from anyone (unless you know different.). Using xp with nero 6 and dvd shrink 3.1 and have never had a bad backup in over 100 discs.

However, just bought a philips DVDR - 70 Recordable DVD and the Alba 108 won't play anything that was recorded on the philips on TDK DVD+RW media. Very annoying. If I can't find a hack, I will have to buy another player. Shame!

CVD $70 N/A 7 of 10 Comments: A well constructed device, from Argos its one of the new 108/D varients, nop hack for VCD or SVCD seems to work, playes all DVD -R disks that I've thrown at it, dont know if its multi-region though. Drive is nice and quiet when playing copies unlike the Pacific 1002 sold by Asda. This player is not as good as the Alba 114 which plays everything out of the box.

Does everything you need and affordable too for college students like me! I recommend it to everyone!

CVD? $80 N/A 6 of 10 Comments: I got this player the other week, the scart socket will not let me control the brightness or contrast, but volume works fine, tried it on two dif TV's Phonos kicking out to much power and it ruins the sound. The drive that come in it is a standard PC DVD drive, I know had it apart. IDE cable on it same as PC's. there not much inside it. Plays SVCD VCD with the goto hack but takes a few goes to get it to work. region free ( 13 ) in bios like page, plays Mp3 good. all round good little machine if not for the remote hack, I only got it to play Music VCDs for my 2 year old son LOL

N/A 1 of 10 Comments: Got a alba dvd 108B from Macro only about 3 months ago and was ok with it. Now I've got load of vcd's and svcd's and it won't play any of them. Apparently it will play them if i copy them to cdrw but that will take years! I saw there's a fix for the xi version. anyone any ideas for this one?

N/A No rating Comments: To all the people spamming on here about 'it skips this.. its skips that - disk correction bellyache.. bellyache.. bellyache' - if your suffering from this then STOP using cheap cd-r/cd-rw/dvdr media, STOP recoring at x4 speed (drop it to x1 or x2 for dvdr blanks), and also STOP sticking labels on the dvdr. Follow these simple steps and you'll have many months of trouble-free play backs on your dvd/vcd movies. Had this player over 12months now (Argos) and its STILL working faultles - after way over 500+ home done vcd/svcd & dvdr's media been played on it. One final point to remember... what do you want for 70 notes hummm???...

I have also suffered CORRECTING DISK ERROR and then jumps 10 mins - very annoying !!! DVD+R's seems to give more succes, but still have problems. Anyone come across this problem ? Help. !!!

N/A 5 of 10 JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename Comments: not a bad player for the price, but just bought a cyberhome 400 from whsmiths for £50, and this player is ten fold better. remote hack works but is annoying, also dvdr's don't work properly in my opinion.they jump too much-i.e.half way through a film, it suddenly goes DISK CORRECTING/READING ERROR and then skips 20 minutes of the film!!!! not only dvdrs but originals like "back to the future" trilogy and a lot more jump and skip. i think for 70 quid in the uk there are better dvd players around, cyberhome 400 for 1! if anyone has the same problems i had please post aswell

N/A 9 of 10 Comments: Hey all, if you've had a problem with the Alba 108 crapping out on you, no power, no nothing at all, then there is a fix. Someone reported this on another site, but not sure which one at the moment. Apparently there's a fuse (a crappy cheap one) on the mainboard inside the Alba. Replace the fuse and it should be hunky-dory, I think it's just the same kind of fuse you get in a plug (not sure of the ampage). I've not had this problem, but if it occurs I know I'll be trying the solution before I go lugging the thing back to the store. Other than that, great player, some skipping on home-brewed stuff, but I just blink when that happens.

N/A 7 of 10 Comments: Small update from what I have previously reported on the player. I burnt a few DVDs onto DVD+RWs with no luck on the player. Could be down to the method of burning, though. All the discs play with no trouble on the Alba DVD114. Tools used to create the DVD: TMPGEnc - MPG Conversation IFOEdit - MPG > VOB Nero 5.5.10.5 - Burning (DVD-ROM UDF method) Media: Phillips 2.4x DVD+RW Still a good player, but the DVD114 model outclasses this in every way (well, except the extremely rubbish welcome screen) ...

N/A 1 of 10 Comments: Just to update my previous post, dvd-r do not work properly on this machine and dvd-rw are also dodgy. It seems to have a seek problem ie you're watching a movie and it moves into the next chapter but it can't find it so it plays the next one it can load and hey presto the movie's jumped forward ten minutes. Do not buy this piece of crap, if you've still got the receipt take it back and complain.

This is total quailty and i recomend it to anyone wanting to get a dvd player.

N/A No rating Comments: Correcting disk error - arrgghhhhh! do not buy this if you're planning on getting a dvd burner to create your own dvds. All the dvd-r brands I've tried from speed X1 to X4 have all had problems, I burn a dozen tv shows onto one disk and the first two episodes are ok but after that I get 'correcting disk error' messages before it finally starts up but it's the wrong clip, ie it shows episode 8 instead of 3. Bloody annoying eh?, two of the better burns I've had were with dvd-rw, no error messages and if you persevere it usually behaves itself. But I'd rather spend 75p on dvd-r than two quid on dvd-rw. Very much doubt if Argos will take it back though.

N/A 8 of 10 Comments: got one of these for xmas,tried vcd's which i had left over from a visit to hong kong,didn't play at first until i found this site and read about the 2812 hack,now plays all my vcd's perfectly!I've tried cdr with music which i recorded with easy cd creator5 basic,that played ok!Couldn't play any photos on cd-r/w,but this could be due to format(i think it has to be in mpegs,so i will need to convert them and try again!).All told it's a good cheap player apart from the annoying fact that there is no remote power switch,but since we got it as a prezzie,we can't complain!And this is a top site for info,thanks all!

Use the rewind (<<) button to move to the begining but press play before the counter gets to zero. Thats it ! all from the Remote control with no timings, works every time. For some reason they seem to prevent you playing SVCD with a counter of zero. Picture quality is great (better than the CyberHome although that needs no hacks)

Burned two DVD-R's One of which plays fine in my 500quid (or was when I bought it) Pioneer DVD player. Neither of them play in the Alba without jumping…. Infinity Professional DVD-R (was £2) plays but skips/stutters. DataSafe Media General Purpose (85p) doesn't play.

CVD? $100 N/A 9 of 10 MP3 long filename Comments: ok you lot that got a replacement alba dvd108xi don't take it back to the shop yet !!!!! this machine has stacks more features than its older 108 not quite as nice looking but all the same for £70 plays everything so far with a little button hacking for vcd/svcd so for the hack thanx to ian and george for this i found it in the hacking section as i was just about to give up and it works a treat you will always have to turn the machine off by remote or button when changing the disk so from a cold start turn on the machine insert the vcd you want to play and close the draw wait till its loaded and says stop on the front panel press program and then number 1 this is the track your going to play front screen should display track length of track 1 press enter and play easy as pie for svcd same as above but after pressing program select from the number buttons the track that is the longest ie. 1=00.17 2=79.00 you need track 2 select no2 press enter and play i bought the 108 for the kids xmas pressy and wanted one for myself but got the 108xi i belive its a better machine allround
