Well, after owning it for 3 years, I'm starting to get ticked off as it is either giving me Disc Read Error messages or it continuously hic-ups during playback. Worst of all, my Sony is now acting up (C:13:00 messages and crashing either during a movie or at the disc menu), so I have no choice but to get a new one.

I am very disappointed with this player. Akai used to be good, now it's just another junk maker. It doesn't play not only DVD-R (Memorex, ProMedia, TDK) but also some commercial DVD'S and moreover after trying to play the above mentioned DVD'S in this player they become unreadable - my Pioneer DVR 104 cannot read them. I suspect that the player overheats and burns them. I am getting rid of it and buying a Ymakawa 288

I bought this back in Nov 2002 so I could get some Godzilla Region 2 Discs. This player is awesome, but I have had a few oddities occur.

1. Anything ADV released on DVD with an anamorphic widescreen has white lines flashing during fast motion sequences.
2. Sometimes it will freeze up for a moment, probably during the layer change.
3. It has a slow down or will skip once in a while if the disc has slight dirt on it.
4. Once in a while it makes really load vibrations or skipping sounds as it tries to read a disc. That problem has improved since I first got it though.

I have had no problems playing DVD-Rs, but certain DVD-Rs will really jump if you hit FastFwd, while others tend to just freeze up and move slowly.

Anyway, most of my discs I have problems with are Region 1s, so I can watch those on my other players, while I've been using this for other regions mostly, and have only had the freezing or skipping problem once in a while. As I said though, I think the freezing may be during a layer change because every time it happens, it is usually in the same spot.

This is an awesome cheap all region player, which is nice since not all DVD players are created equal. Some day I would like a player that plays all discs perfectly fine without a flaw, but I doubt that will happen.

I rate this a 8/10.

I downgraded my rating of this player because of the DVD+-R(W) incompatibility. Memorex DVD-R media burned at 4X has serious problems beyond about halfway through the disk, though at 1X it's generally OK. My 1999 vintage Panasonic plays the exact same disks flawlessly.

Did the firmware upgrade (BA17) described below. Thanks for the info!
I tried 2 different brands of DVD+R (TDK 4X and a Generic 4X that came with my LiteOn burner) and neither would play. TDK DVD-R 2X, burned on my LiteOn LDW-451S, with Nero5 ("DVD Video", "ISO Level 1", "ISO 9660", Deselect "Joliet" and deselect all "Relax ISO Restrictions") worked!
This player is very picky about media, but other than that, I have been very happy with it. The customer service is outstanding.

I was able to get VCD and SVCD to work with Nero 5 but not with Pinnacle Studio 8. Probably a Studio problem. However, my parents bought the same model about 3 mos. after I did and it won't play the same VCDs or SVCDs that mine will play.

Could not get Imation DVD-RW or Memorex DVD+RW to work, though it did play on computer's drive using PowerDVD. Exact copy of disk to Memorex DVD-R worked fine.

I bought a DVD burner, an OptoRite DVD+-RW, DD0203, and set out to create DVDs for my Akai DVPS-760. (Story in Forums.) I tried every burner program and option with both -R and +R media but the 760 wouldn't play the disks. I gave the DVDs to friends and their DVD players played every DVD, so it wasn't the media, the burner or the video files. A Sony DVD-R freebie I made a HD backup on did play allowing me to browse the folders and show jpgs etc.

I contacted AKAI USA to see if there was a firmware upgrade available. I couldn't find any reference to one on the web. AKAI's reply email asked me to call. I called and a support technician responded immediately! No automated call director! He told me how to check my firmware version, told me there was a newer version, and emailed it to me! I burnt the firmware to CD, put it in the 760, and upgraded. Easy!

Now I retried all the DVDs I burnt earlier. The DVD+Rs still gave "Disc Error" but the DVD-Rs almost played. They played in a halting, audio in/out fashion. It looked like better media might fix the problem now. (The Sony DVD-R had been readable, but it didn't have a movie on it... )

I discovered that with the firmware upgrade and better quality DVD-R it works flawlessly.

The Media:
1. Verbatim DataLife DVD-R don't work.
2. Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+R don't work.
3. Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD-R WORK!
4. Memorex DVD-R version 2.0 WORK!

The Firmware:
The firmware version can be seen by selecting "Setup" from the main menu and pressing the Volume + button on the remote. The version is on the right hand side a few lines from the top. It will read "A700 ????".

There are three different "loaders" for the 760. The upgrade is loader specific. The first two letters marked ?? are the loader, the second two are the version number. My firwmare was "A700 BA11". The current version is "17" so I upgraded to the "BA17" firmware. Another loader is "AC". If you have "BA17" or "AC17" or "??17" you have the current version.

Software:
1. Nero 5.5.10.42 works fine!
I select "DVD Video", "ISO Level 1", "ISO 9660", Deselect "Joliet" and deselect all "Relax ISO Restrictions".

Very glad to find a solution, I didn't want to replace the player. I didn't try a movie on the Sony DVD-R media that the player read before the upgrade so I'll never know if it might have worked without the upgrade. I just know it works now.

Got the player and it could not lod any CDs or DVDs.

The next worked fine for 3 months. Then it started to have problems with rental/scratched DVDs, stopping and jumping. After another month it could not play DVD's and started to have problems with CD's. Another month and it does not paly anything. A great region free multi TV (PAL/NTSC) DVD, CD, MP3 player while it works.

But the quality sux

Hi, I really really Like this player I have had it for some time now, and well It reads SVCD, MP3, VCD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, well I just love it, now a few days ago I found out that a friend got a new DVD, I don't remember it's brand, but I saw that it had a very interesting feature ( at least for me ) the ability to read MPG1/2 files with no authoring... so I was like ... well, maybe so I had a couple of Ideas, I tought let's burn some un authored MPG2/MPG1, on a CD, so I did, I just told me it was empty... bummer, then I tought lets change the file extensions, so I grabed a bounch of MPG files and renamed them to dat,mp3,mpv,vob,mp2 etc etc, then I loaded the CD and one file was shoing on the browser with a (?) ( interrogation mark ) so I placed the selector on it and hitted play, BAM ! I was watching the unauthored MPG file, I was like KOOL!!! so I got out the CD and cheched what was the extension of the file... well it was the XXXXX.mp3, I think that the player has some sort of filter that allows only to browse files with mp3 extension, but when it trys to play it if it founds out that it is a video it just plays the video, so yes it can read Unauthored MPG files, just rename them to MP3 before burning them :D, now since I had a bounch of music video files that I wanted to see on my DVD, and they where much much more than 1 CD, so I was waiting to make them a DVD or something to watch them, so since I just had found that I could just rename them to MP3, and see them unauthored I made a DVD full of MPG files renamed to MP3, I poped it in the DVD, and my surprise was that now I didn't have a bounch of (?) marks but each file said, Video CD, once again I pressed play on all the files and watched them !!! YAHOO ! awesome :D.

so here is the raw info if you want to play unauthored CDs DVDs on your fine AKAI player.

find the file or files you want to watch on the DVD, FILE.MPG FILE.MPG2, rename them to FILE1.MP3 FILE2.MP3, then burn them as a normal file on a CD, CD-RW, DVD-R or DVD-RW.

pop them on your DVD player, then just find the file on the browser and hit play.

just one note.. when it plays the file the LCD display on the DVD reads MPEG--MPEG over and over.

I hope this helps some one out there..

Roberto Salvatierra.

I bought the player in 12/03. I liked the slim housing. A region free, black progressive scan player for $100 was a good buy.

Played all DVD's but one . Plays PAL DVD just fine. Good picture quality.

Plays SVCD made with DVD2SVCD (CCE & Tmpeg encoders) but not doesn't play SVCDs made with Neros vison express.

Tried to make a first DVD (Nero 6) burned on a Nec ND1300a and a TDK+RW (2.4x) working but didn't play (Disk error)

This player will play a lot of different formats, however please note the following:

- CD+R and CD+RW only play if you mark them as DVD-ROM (you can do that with NERO on the "burn" tab)
- VCD and SVCD are best authored/burned with VCDEASY. Never fails. When you use NERO or other utilities sometimes the player recognises the CD's as MP3 CDs

Great player

I live in the UK and I got this player when I was over in the US. For anyone looking to buy this DVD player for use in the UK, the following points may be useful

1. The ower supply is compatible

2. There is No SCART outpout at the back like most TVS in the UK would have. It has a S-video, Component Video out. You can get scar addapters that will accept these connections.

3. It has Multi-System out put so yout TV must be able to accept these, or you might end up with a black and white picture.

I use this in the UK and I have no problems what so ever. Great product to buy.

I've had this unit for 6 months now and am very happy with it. Today though, I ran into a problem with DVD-R movies. It started freezing toward the end of the movie and eventually died. I tried another and did the same thing. I'm thinking it may be the Princo DVD-R I'm using. It seems to freeze when it heats up.
Great player otherwise.

This a good machine.
However I had one bad experience with it.
I connected it to a PAL TV set. I selected "multi"
for the TV mode , and it played all DVDs and VCDs
properly. When I tried looking at some JPEG
pictures, they were displayed black and white!!!

There is no selection for the JPEG images in the setup.
So, my conclusion is that this is not a 100% multisystem machine.

I still rate it as 9 out of 10.

Will, are you sure you made your SVCDs properly? I have no problem playing SVCDs. Also I have played XVCDs and XSVCDs (Ignore my comment about file size in my earlier post - I found I had to increase the bit rate to get XSVCDs at 720x480). Also, I have made XSVCDs at bit rates up to 7000 and the player had no problem with them. Also have made XSVCDs with VBR, again no problem.
