Excellent Player for store bought dvd's.

After the secret menu hack it played vcd and svcd.
Although it stuttered on some of my svcd's that other machines play fine.

Solid steel construction. Well Made.

Although initially it played all the dvd-r's I put in it, the first movie I tried to watch all of started stuttering and skipping ahead just over an hour in. For this reason alone I had to return the machine. I currently had a fussy player and was not looking for another. Instead I bought a single disc Zenith DVB410 from Future Shop for $79 Can. It plays all this discs the Akai struggled with.

It's most annoying feature is the two functions combined on one button. Skip/Scan (Next/FF)
It takes lots of coordination to hold the button till it goes into ff mode. One push and release causes a skip or chapter jump. After some practice I was still no better at operating it.

Too bad for this player's poor read capabilities. I was initially very excited about this handsome 5 disc player.

Based on the initial review here - I was very excited about this player.

While it played both DVD and DVD-R - and could do conversion from PAL to NTSC quite nicely -
It wouldn't play any SVCD or VCD that I threw at it. Including some commercially pressed VCD's.

For a DVD player only - I'ld recommend this -
but my requirements also include the SVCD and VCD formats.

Comments:
I have tried with burned DVD-R of Princo Media, also played DVD+R and DVD+RW and most of them played OK. Nice SVCD playing and also VCD (you have to hack your unit, but it's an easy step).
I have played region 1 and 4, and also region free DVDs. I don't know if its realy a multiregion DVD, but for me it works just fine. I had an AIWA before, with the same interface (color disk spinning, menues, etc) and had some problems with some DVD-R disks, since the image got broken in some disks with several pauses, and in the AKAI it plays flawless.
I'm very pleased with the player considering the price, since my old DVD costed me over $300.

Comments:
This machine sells without VCD and SVCD features. A simple remote sequence exists to enable these modes and makes this a more attractive buy. Check DVD hack section.

It seems a bit picky when it comes to VCD's on cheap 80minute CD-R's from bundles. Audio gets choppy at times. Other CD-R's and SVCD's work fine.

Won't change automatically on multivolume VCD's. (Not yet anyway)

Comments:
Couldn't play my VCD's or SVCD's which played on other DVD players easily. Nothing in manual to indicate it plays these formats. Manual warns not to use 80 minute (700mb) CD-R's for Mp3's or CD-RW's. That's not good.

This unit is big. 16" deep is too big for my TV stand. Remote buttons are small but neatly laid out.

Positively it's a very quiet operating changer with a nice chrome look. It doesn't heat up like other machines I've tried.

Picture is super and the on-screen menu is not obstructing like others I've used.

Overall, the CD audio is very clean and if you want hours of audio or DVD play this is a nice machine for the money. $100 Canadian.

Wonder where the software upgrade is?
