CVD? $90 N/A 8 of 10 Comments: Bought at SAM's for it's Progressive Scan and SVCD features. I am 'archiving' DVDs to SVCD using Nero or DVD2SVCD and have found it to do a very acceptable playback job. I use the single cable output to the TV and am quite satisfied with the quality for DVD and SVCD's. Except for vertical bar shadows which may be the TV as opposed to this player everything is great. I will be getting component output cables to see it the picture quality is enhanced. I output sound to a cheap Sony ($179) unit for Dolby 5.1 surround sound with DVDs using old stereo front left/right speakers and use 3 small computer speakers for the center and back satellite channels and find the effect excellent. All brands of CD-R work for SVCD burning using Clonecd. So for $270 ($90 for the DVD and $180 for the Sony audio) I have a respectable high quality multi format home theater system.

N/A 8 of 10 Comments: Found player good value for money. Front panel design & buttons could be better. Remote control feel is average. Overall performs very well. I didnt get the region (hack) unlock instruction sheet. Could someone please email me a copy.

N/A 9 of 10 Comments: ADV-8000 works like a charm. Sold my brand new Sony DVD to my brither for half the purchase price because ,though it was a quality player, great picture and sound, it would not play any thing other than dvd,vcd and audio CD. The AKAI plays home burnt (Easy CD platinum) MP3's, my home movies on CD-R VCD, and CD-R Audio CD's perfectly. As a bonus the AKAI played a DVD that a rental shop threw out because it got damaged (looked like it was trodden on). I had tried this disk on several machines and not a thing. On the AKAI it booted up and went straight into the movie. The menu wouldnt work as the screen appeared to be breaking up, but when you see the damage to this disk you are not too upset. The MP3 disk will only recognise 21 tracks but I think it was a problem in the making not the machine. The scroll window in Easy CD only showed 21 titles at the time and some how only printed 21 to the menu. All menues and page graphics work except the title page but I'm told they will work if I make VCD 2 disks insresd of 1's. The manual states thst the ADV-8000 is compatible withDVD, SVCD,CVD (CDVD) , MP3, DVCD, VCD1.0/1.1/2.0, HDCD, CD-DA, CD-R AND CD-I disks. If any one can tell me what DVCD. HDCD, CD-Iand confirm CVD IS CDVD or mini disk I would appreciate it. I will test the lot over time and report.

N/A 9 of 10 Comments: An excellent player with loads of features. Has separate DD 5.1 audio outputs, switchable bypass 5.1 decoder, digital coaxial and optical audio out, S-video and composite outputs. Made in China. Multi region, comes with what appears to be an unofficial extra instruction sheet of how to region hack it by unlocking region code restriction locks, by pressing multiple buttons at once. Seems to be very tolerant of CDR/RW brands. Tested: plays el-cheapo Lazer brand CDR and RW's (both silver and blue types), Ricoh CDR/RW's, Media Excel CDRW. Others yet to be tested. You'll probably never use CDR's again on this machine anyway, CDRW's played so well, why would you bother with R's when you can erase over and over. 100% success rate playing home made compliant VCD, SVCD made using TMPEGEnc encoder, I-Author and Easy CD Creator 4. All menus and multi menu/chapter SVCD's made with above functioned correctly, FF/RW worked correctly in all speeds, time output displayed correct clip length. MiniDVD's yet to be tested, didn't work with I-author, will try Spruce-up DVD. XSVCD, XVCD didn't seem to work, but will have to try different settings first to confirm this.
