Quite a nice player but it doesn't play a lot of DVD-R brands. For example I am having problems with the following disks:
(TTG01) Datawrite 4x printable surface
(MCC 02RG20) Datawrite Classic 8x Printable surface
(CMC MAG. AE1) Datawrite 8x 4.7GB DVD-R Yellow Disks
Good disks that work with this player are:
(RITEKG05) Datawrite Yellow (V2) General Purpose 4x DVD-R
(ProdiscF01) Datawrite Classic 8x Grey disk

Good: Works fine with my own DVD-R burnt with Nero 6.0 or DVDdecrypter. No problem with subtitles on backup copies made with dvdshrink.
Got a few problems with old VCDs, but with commercial VCDs and the ones I made on the PC with my new DVD-R recorder, it plays good.
Bad: I Can't play any PAL DVD on this player, only NTSC "zone 2" or "All zones" will play.
if some techies are interested, here is the firmware info :

I have used back up copies of movies using cloneDVD burnt on "infiniti" brand DVD+R. When played in the player, after about 10 minutes the image freezes then craches. could this be the type of media? The DVD works fine on my PC player....
can anyone recomend DVD+R media that work with thsi machine? |

I have found that this player has problems with some DVD menu systems.
I don't know if the menu on the DVD's were not standard, but in 5 different models of DVD player they were tested in, this is the only player to have a problem.
It brings the menu up, but when you select the option to play the movie, the command is either ignored, or it goes to the screen that you get when you have no disc in. |

| Adding to my previous comments - I got a backup copy of Goldmember that was on a 'DataSafe Media' DVD-R and this worked perfectly. However, I got 3 DVD-R's that were 'Choice' branded. These worked until later chapters - skipping and finally crashing out. These DVD-R's worked fine on my flatmates DVD player(Alba 108). Still slow and noisy. |

Just bought this player from Richer Sounds.£159 inc 3yr wtee. They did a flash upgrade in the shop off a CDR to make it multiregion.
It now displays firmware as:
MODEL:AIWA USA
REGION:NO:00
NATION:de:00
MICOM:VO.9 20011116
SERVO:D104
MPEG:OL40 22MAR01
MISCEL:11 E0
44 45 00 DE 10 80 00 00
What all that means Id like to know!
I bought this player for the NTSC converting and because its BLACK!
My 1st dvd player and Im very happy with it.
Ps,no-one ever mentions how long these VCD copies take to do!Dont think I'll bother!(well ok,im ripping right now but Sshhhh)
Oh,I reckon it plays CDs a damn sight better (sound)than my Kenwood hifi deck.Analog output, never mind the digital. |

Region hack an R2 players not possible - all hack codes dose not work. The "hacked" firmware on http://www.dvdregionhacks.com is not available - you will be redirectored to http://www.dvdanswers.com/ and get nothing about firmware.

I bought the player in UK.
I tried one DVD-R and one DVD-RW (Verbatim done with a Pioneer A04). I tested the DVD-RW on a Panasonic RV31 (also a UK model that didn't have MP3) with success.
None of them are working on my Aiwa... but I have mp3 now...
Else no problem. |

My general gripe with this machine is it's slowness and is noisy on track change.
Plays all VCD's no problem, (1.0 and 2.0) - I have used unbranded, Samsung and TDK disks.
Plays CDR and CDRW no problem.
Great picture - perhaps the sound a little quiet. |

| This player accepts XVCDs that do not exceed the VCD bitrate too much. VBR-encoded (TMPGEnc CQ-VBR etc) discs are accepted. There seems to be a Chinese model that accepts SVCDs, haven't found info on that one yet though :( |

Only tried some very short movies on it but all seemed to be OK. This is region free (mod chip)

wel for as far as the XVCD part im not sure about that. tried some sort of hack which basically ment changing the header of a mpg2 file into VCD instead of SVCD. it played only hicking sound and a screen which was flickering a lot. (while in ffwd-play it played perfectly and what a quality, but in normal play, weird sound and screen). Think it doesnt completely supports XVCD, dunno the precise reason for that...blablabla
further its a pretty good player.
if u got this Aiwa in region 2-model check http://www.dvdregionhacks.com for a firmware update which will make it region free. also read somehwere that the chip in it is capable of playing SVCD's dunno much about that deal (wopuld love to know more about it if any of u guys would happen to know something about it) |
