After replacing the DVD-drive with an ASUS E-608, both, DVD+ and DVD+RW are working (see also http://www.area450.com/)

CVD? $252 N/A 10 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: The player is amazing! Attached succesfully a 60GB harddisk! How 2 Do it: Just update the firmware (rom-file - www.area450.com) Attach an to IDE cable. Jumper your HHD to slave. Format your HHD in your pc (16/32fat- DOS primair) Use a SCSI case with voltage (standalone player has not enough power for 2 devices). Ripout the SCSI connectors! And that's it! You can store now up to 30 SVCD moviez to your HHD and access them within one second! You can also store more than 100.000 pictures (.jpg's) Or more than 15.000 .mp3's You can also store REAL DVD on disk (take 7-9GB space!) Just rip a DVD and rename the extensie VOB 2 MPG. Amazing stuff eh! Because of the HHD this player is unlimited 2 (X/S)VCD filesize/specificaties (fast datatransfer) and "easy going" plays everything what you through at it! Enjoy! CVD? $239 N/A 7 of 10 Comments: I'm putting this in specifically to talk about DVD-R. I bought a Pioneer DVR-A03 and burned a DVD-R which at first didn't work with the Afreey. However after I changed my IDE drive inside the unit with my Toshiba SD-M1212 drive it plays DVD-R perfectly. My next test will be to put a Pioneer DVD drive which is DVD-RW compatible and see if it will play that media. The limitation seems to be with the drive and not the unit firmware as I'm still running 3.3b to keep my macrovision free version.

CVD? $252 N/A 8 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: Gotta agree with Nezza's comments. This is an excellent player for the money (I paid 159.99 uk pounds + 9.99 shipping from second-spin). My previous DVD players were the Panasonic A110 and Aiwa DV 370 (now for sale) which was great but did did not support SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD or MiniDVD. I also love the firmware upgrade facility via cd-r. It has played every home brew MiniDVD I've created, plus all my VCDs, SVCDs. I've also tried both the XVCD and XSVCD samples from VCDHelper which played flawlessly. It sounds good on audio CDs and MP3s but doesn't like ID3 v2 tags (same as the Aiwa) causing it to skip the first couple of seconds of these tracks. I am about to flash firmware version 3.4c which allows you to play a number of file types burnt directly to a CD e.g. .MPG. I echo Nezza's comments about Area450. It's an excellent site and a must if you own one of these players or the equivalent Encore/Sampo/Omni machine. Jez

CVD? $252 N/A 8 of 10 Comments: Only paid £165 for this very vesatile tool. This is my first Standalone player so I can't compare the quality to others (though it's loda better than the Hollywood card in my PC), but I'm more than happy with the results for so little money. It's true multiregion (not region 0) through the remote so there should be no problems with RCE encoded discs like some budget players) - and the jewel in the crown (for me) is you can copy to video or capture on PC as Macrovision can be disabled. Some people have complained of lack of firmware support by Afreey, but I get all the help I need (plus loads of usefull extra info) from a UK web site called Area-450 (cheers Clayts). Just search "Area-450".

CVD? $252 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: This is a very nice player. For this Price it can't be the best in quality but quality is more than satisfying. What makes this player so interesting is it's alround-capability. It has played almost everything that i've tried (could not test miniDVD, DVD-R, XVCD and XSVCD though). In mp3 it playd everything even low bitrates like 48kbit, but not 32kbit at 22khz, but that was probably cause of the 22khz and the fact that this mp3 was mpeg 2 layer 3. The model I got did not have free region code but it was easily enabable (as other posters have written how). The latest ld 2060 should be region free by default. The only thing I thought annoying is that only the first 8 characters of mp3-files where displayed and the id3 data was not displayed. (Maybee better in later firmware? Afreey does not have them for download on their site but told to be willing to send it on demand). I don't know what others have said about lack of support. I did not really have troubles. Ok, you will defenitively have better support and guarantee on more expensive models but the support I got was ok. There is difference in support quality though, so don't pick the first dealer you find, compare. For the german's: www.p-c-c.de seemes to have best support, but price is higher; www.mp3cdplayer.de is ok and now quite cheap - bought it there; www.gravis.de is cheapest i've seen but does not seem to have good support and has (or has had) not up-to-date models. For mp3cdplayer i'm not sure, the model i got is from 3/2000 but works well and firmware is upgradable.

Buy Afreey for mini-DVD...buy Pioneer for VCD.
