Comments:
Crap!

1. Remote Control is infuriating. Having to point it directly at the machine and then pressing a button numerous times to get a response is not good enough.

2. Got stuck on DVD menu screen on three separate dvds.

3. Pixelated on two separate dvds. Discs were not dirty of scratched.

4. Noticed occasional 'sticking' during playback. This was not the layer transitioning and was noticable only for a split second but still blindingly annoying!

5. Picture was soft and fuzzy even with added contrast and brightness functions!

6. Came with a separate sheet for the hacks. DIY? Dont think so!

7. Very bad design.

8. CD tray only comes half way out like it can't be bothered!

Enough was enough. After a week and a half I had given it more than enough time to redeem itself so back to Richer Sounds it went. They were happy to swap the machine. I finished up with a Pioneer Multiregion as I'd had a region 2 player for five years with zero problems. As I was swapping it another customer came into the shop to swap exactly the same Acoustic Solution machine! I can't imagine word of mouth for this player is much good.
Funny thing is the box it came in had a sticker on claiming it had been through Quality Assurance.
Truly mind boggling!

A tremodous machine which plays all the discs i brought from Thailand. Also M/R using a simple hack and macrovision free.

The colours are so vivid and images are ver bright its as if you are tripping on a tablet. CD playback is quite good alot better then by Sony cdpxe 330. take the plunge you don't know what you are missing

Comments:
I bought one of these at Richer Sounds a week ago on the recommendation of the salesperson as they didn't have the player I went there to get. I was told by the staff member that it would play 'anything', even DivX (which I thought was suspect right away, and surely enough it doesn't).
The Richer Sounds in-house review in their catalogue was certainly glowing, so I had high hopes...

The Good:
Plays VCD & SVCD on CD-R and CD-RW (with VCD hack). Plays DVD-R and DVD+RW on fairly cheap media without any problem (but see below). Plays every MP3 I tried, inc high bitrate VBR files (tried CBR up to 320 kbps). Plays DVD-VCDs (audio upsampled to 48 kHz). Supports Component, RGB, S-Video and Composite video out and analogue 2.0, 5.1 and digital coaxial and optical out. Can be very easily made region free and macrovision disabled.

The Bad:
OK, there's a lot of 'Bad' so I've split it into sections...

Discs - Wouldn't reliably play a VCD from a CD-RW that had been written to several times (a Philips and a Toshiba player read it fine), but strangely read MP3s fine from the same disc. Only plays DVD+RW that have been bitsetted to DVD-ROM (otherwise it tries to play them as CDDA, with painful results).

Formats - No MP3 long file name support. Would not play DivX as mentioned by Richer Sounds. Also wouldn't play MPEGISO, which I asked for and would told it could play too. Also wouldn't play miniDVD.

Video - Inconsistant video black levels (PAL discs darker than NTSC, using Composite, S-Video or RGB). Poor colour reproduction, lacks 'vibrance' - looks better on my 5 year old Toshiba. Has contrast controls, but these seem to vary brightness as well - actual brightness settings are very poor ('Soft' looks aweful on skin tones, and due to the low PAL black level 'Bright' was a necessity rather than an extra). NTSC in PAL mode is not PAL60, so the video is jerky due to dropped frames. Zooming a widescreen video does not expand the picture vertically to fill the screen, but instead cuts it off. Certainly not great video quality.

Operation - It's noisy if anything (even a fairly light freeview digibox) is placed on top of it. You have to point the remote control directly at the player for it to work.

Appearance - The silver front looks very plasticy, the LCD window is simply stuck on with glue so mine was a bit off centre, the DVD drawer does not come out all the way so you have to put discs in at a slight angle, and so on. OSD looks pretty poor, much like a cheap VCR.

As all those bad points show, I was not very pleased with the A.S. DVD651. For the price you can get far better players - the CyberHome DVD 505 is the same price at the moment and is an infinitely better machine, so I swapped mine for one of those.

Most things had to be unlocked through handset hot codes. I bought t from Richer Sounds around January. It came with a list of codes for what to unlock and how.

For MP3 bitrate, i have been able to use 192, but haven't tried higher.

Comments:
I bought this from Richer Sounds to replace another disappointing purchase, for GBP100. It's acceptable, but not dramatic considering how cheap some devices are these days.

It has a Dolby 5.1 decoder with all the Phono sockets on the back, as well as SCART, which is nice for my tired old analogue surround sound amplifier.

It also takes an age to recognise a new disc. The remote control is cheap and plasticky, but works. You can't change subtitles while the screen is zoomed. The zoom doesn't fill the screen vertically even when it could. The general build quality is perhaps slightly above average. The layer-transition delay is short or instant. It doesn't seem to have a pre-stop state.

It does not read VCD discs as standard; you need to hack it with the remote (instructions: Open tray, Setup, Next, Prev, Next, Prev. On the "VER" menu, press Up/Down to go to a different hack feature and Left/Right to change the setting. VER 255 = multiregion. 3000 = Parental Control disabled. 4000 = Makrovision Disabled. 5000 = VCD enabled.)

Bought from Richer sounds 6 months ago for £120.
Will not play DVD-RW or DVD+RW. When playing back DVD-Rs sound is crackly and distorted (same discs play fine on other machines). General picture & sound quality disappointing, build quality poor. Finally got fed up with it and replaced with Limit DVD9900SE which is 100x better in all respects!

Comments:
Had some problems with chapter selection on VCD and SVCD, but that can be got round by using the PBC button to play from the beginning. All burnt with Nero 5.5.9.9

The video output seems a little unsaturated to me and it looks as though the video DAC is short of bits - I'm guessing that it's only using around 6 bits per colour. I don't think it's the source material as that plays fine on my PC.

I've not yet found a discrete power code for use with my Pronto remote.

Interestingly for a budget player, it has component video out (switchable between RGB and YUV).

It's also slightly noisy with some disks.

I wouldn't recommend it as the only player, but I bought it to play SVCDs and rentals for which it is fine (I use my Sony jukebox for my own discs)
