I'm posting this primarily because no-one has mentioned the fact that this player *will* play DVD-RWs *as well as* straight DVD-Rs!! I bought a DVD writer recently (NEC ND 3520) and TDK 4x DVD-RW media and was thinking of also buying a player that COULD play a DVD-RW full of VCDs.
I just burned and tried a DVD of VCDs on my 451 to see what would happen - not expecting much - and lo and behold, the thing played!
Incidentally, I think it's a *great* budget player if you just want to watch DVDs/VCDs and don't need surround sound or any fancy home cinema enhancement. Had mine over a year with no issues. |

Needed a remote control hack to enable VCD/SVCD playback. It plays fine VCDs but there is a slight problem with SVCDs. It will not play more than 40 mins per SVCD, that is, if the SVCD is longer than 40 mins, it will play faster than normal. I have'n tried SVCDs longer than 52 mins, but even for these the "compression" effect (about 20% in this case) is not quite straightforward to notice.
Also when playing SVCDs, if I do a fast forward then the image and the sound will get desyncronised a bit (it happened only for a movie, others are fine). |

Machine has problems with discs with long and complex menus and tends to spaz out if kept on pause for more than a few seconds. Other than those glitches sound and picture are good although you notice a bit of picture distortion on long, slow moving shots where there is high contrast. Plays mp3 well but with poor filename support. The remote control is lousy, (has to be pointing right at the unit).
An ok machine but probably not the best you could do for the money in terms of picture, (£89.99 richer sounds)- but for features it's good vfm |

Great for a budget player. It's played pretty much everything I put into it, and picture quality on my Sony 28" is good.
However, when switching it on, it often (half the time) can't read the new disc (DVD/VCD), spinning up and down continuously, and needing a mains power-off to get it working (after which it invariably does work). Most likely just my machine, but I don't want to risk changing it in case the replacement has a more serious fault.
The remote control also requires a bit of effort : you have to point it RIGHT at the IR sensor on the player - you can sit on your sofa at the far side of the room, but you have to aim the control accurately for the player to pick it up : however, this is a well-documented 'feature' of this player. Not sure if this is the remote or the player : if the remote, an All-in-one replacement would fix this.
MP3 filenames are 8+3 (well, 8+0), with no M3U support, and completely basic on-screen display.
But hey, this is a budget player : I bought it for the wide range of supported formats (at that time), and relatively very good picture (and quite good sound) reviews, and it matches all these expectations. 7/10.

Good solid player. Works with all discs I have tested. Only one drawback is that it supposedly supports MP3 Long Filenames yet when I load a MP3 cd it only shows the first 6 characters of the folder and filename... hardly long filename support.
I dont know whether this only happens on folder based MP3 cds but it certainly doesnt support long filenames on my player.
Apart from the fact that the player how comes with VCD/SVCD playback DISABLED as standard (which is easily re-enabled) this is a great little dvd player. |

| Pretty solid player all in all, plays everything i've given to it with no problems. Only gripe I have is that you have to fully switch the player off then on again if you change the medium/format (e.g. you watch a dvd, then want to watch a vcd), otherwise you can get a 'disc format not recognised' message. Other than that, it's very good, and at £90 (~$130 US), excellent value for money for a multiregional DVD/VCD/MP3 player |
