I've had dozens of flawless burns using my iMac G4's internal SuperDrive (4x) with these discs. Their compatibility with consumer DVD players is nothing short of superb.

However, I would like to thoroughly document a major issue that I encountered when using these discs in the Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D burner (used in an external LaCie unit). The issue persisted regardless of burn speed selection and burning software, and was 100% reproducible. After successful burning and verification these discs would play back poorly in almost every consumer DVD player. The symptom was occasional tearing and deforming of pixels across certain portions of the image.

Even though a batch of discs would all verify perfectly by the same burner using the same software, the intensity of the symptom would vary from disc to disc and player to player. But it would still remain. Strangely enough, when played back on a computer DVD player, all signs of this issue were non-existent. I ended up compiling this list of possible explanations:

1. Bad DVD burner quality.
2. Bad DVD-R media quality.
3. Bad DVD encoding quality.

However, each one of these possibilities was eliminated by the following two facts: when these discs are used in any of my other DVD burners besides this Pioneer DVR-106D, or when any of my other discs besides these Apple MCC 02 RG20’s are used in this Pioneer DVR-106D burner, the issue would instantly vanish!

Somehow the odd combination of this particular kind of disc and that particular model of burner caused a conflict resulting in poor playback on consumer players. Byte for byte comparisons were even carried out between discs having the issue and those without. The results did not even find one un-matching sector; which is not surprising because every burn we carried out from the same disc image file.

P.S. The DVDs Apple sells in these 25 pack spindles are not the same as the DVDs they sell in the 5 pack of jewel cases. It is only the DVDs sold in the 25 pack that seem to be incompatible this Pioneer DVR-106D drive. Apple DVDs from the 5 packs did not result in any of the complications described thus far.
