Comments posted by alistair.gutcher from United Kingdom, September 15, 2012:
Not made by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC, Verbatim's parent company). Instead made by CMC Magnetics. According to Verbatim's marketting in Australia, ALL their 8cm discs have a HARD COAT. No mention of a hard coat on the USA or UK website, or anywhere on the media or packaging. Verbatim UK don't even know themselves (I e-mailed them and they hadn't a clue). Does seem to have a hard coat though, "feels" like a Blu Ray disc (hard to tell yet) with fingers, and looks like it also, it seems. Printable matt white surface. Used ImgBurn 2.5.6.0 and burned at 2x with NEC ND3540A modded firmware 1.WB (RPC1, all regions), drive is now quite old and MUCH used. Burned many brands but this was the 1st to give error on verify of "session 1 track 1 is smaller on the disc than it is in the image file" with many sectors being different etc. But seems to be a firmware bug on my drive. And then again I was burning a GameCube ISO with NO file system at the time. Reads back with perfect quality (via ScanDisc tab of Nero 7 CD/DVD speed) and also with Disc Quality tab where it gets PIF of 73 max, average 21, and POF of 11 max, average 0.43 on NEC ND3540A, and also same in TSSTcorp SH-S223C SB07 drive (minus the quality scan that the SH-S223C can't do). Supposed to give perfect GameCube compatability with modchip and a tweaked laser pot. We shall see... Burned disc certainly works great in Dolphin emulator direct from drives or ripped as test from burned disc with IsoBuster. Nice to be able to write on them with a marker pen. So far rather impressed, very good quality discs.
