If you forget the security code (Lock > Password menu), you can reset it by doing the following: 1) Power on the player 2) Press Setup/Menu in DVD mode 3) Input this six digit number "210499" The password/security code has now been reset. If you know of a region code hack for this player, PLEASE post it here!
This player responds to the Firmware Version display command that applies to many LG players... I'm sure a region code hack is right around the corner! Press 'Setup' Navigate to the Aspect Ratio option Highlight 16:9 Enter code 1397139 Press 'Enter' The Firmware page will display. You can't change anything, though. Damn!
UPDATE! After literally minutes of ceaseless searching, I have managed to arrive at the EEPROM screen with an LG method: Power up with no disc Wait for 'No Disc' to appear on screen Press 'Pause' Enter code 1472 The EEPROM screen appears! I have been able to activate the VCD function, and presumably turn off the MacroVision (though I have no way to test it) by changing the position 4 value to '47', and the position 7 value to 'fe', respectively. Don't forget to press 'Pause' and turn the power off and on again to apply the edited values. I suppose this means that Insignia is using the same firmware as every other damn manufacturer out there... LG, Zenith, etc... Rip-off merchants! If anybody knows how to edit the EEPROM of other brands with similar firmware to make them multi-region, then let us know!
I figured out part of this hack and need some help from the experts: 1) Place a Region 2 DVD in tray and close 2) Wait until the screen reads Check Regional Code 3) Press Display and a funny little figure with 1/5 will appear. 4) Scroll up and down to select desired region..... This is where I'm lost... can anyone assist?
With no DVD, hit SETUP/MENU on the remote. Scroll down to lock (the lock symbol). Go to the right and then down to Area Code. Go to the right, to change the Area Code; the Password screen will appear. Enter 1472 (enter). It may ask you to confirm it; if so, confirm it. Then you can change the Area Code setting from "US" to something else. I am not sure what stands for zone-free choice ("AL"???). The point is that after fiddling with this and then returning the Area Code to "US" the player started reading DVDs from other zones which earlier it definitely refused to read earlier. Hope this works for you!
