Whilst trying to hack my sony dvp-ns330, I noticed that my RDR-GX3 had turned on. After putting a region 1 disc in, it had worked!

Another option is to but a cheap multiregion player.
It won't cost much more. Even if you get a cheap region 2 player, the lesser known models are easy to hack yourself.

If you then get an enhanced scart from www.techtronics.com (which stops macrovision etc) you can then play them on the new player and use your Sony to record a copy. Obviously, this would have to be for 'back-up' copies only. (I've made back-up copies of several of my friends DVDs and I can't tell the difference).

The only naff thing in doing this is that if you want normal SP quality on the Sony longer films have to be split between 2 discs (and you don't get the DVD menu options)

Found a site that does this. I am not a techy so rented there remote. Simple press one button and voila it was done. Very easy whish is just as well for a technofobe like me. The site was www.sonycodes.co.uk worth a look.

OK, first of all thanks to everyone on this and the Sony NS DVD player forum.

I've managed to reprogram my RDR-GX3 using Psiloc total IR remote on my Sony Ericsson P900 - Free trial download! This program is also available for Nokia Series 60 phones!

I then got a Philips Pronto setup file from Remotecentral.com: http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/fi ... er&fc=

Total IR recognises this file - beam it to the phone - open the file, then select to import the codes.

Now open Total IR and select any device (I used a Sony TV setting as it has numbers on it).

Assign the buttons thus:
Tap the menu button in the bottom left corner, then tap Select Command - dismiss the dialog then hit tap the 1 button on the remote. Press select on the next dialog...

Here I ran into a snag - but I worked it out from the fact that I learned on another forum that button 5 should be the power button - but button 1 was power for me. SO the codes were backwards!

Assign Unnamed 5 by tapping Done.
Repeat for buttons 2-5 by assigning 4, 3, 2, 1 respectively.

Who knows, maybe for you the codes import the right way around - so if this doesn't work, try assigning code 1 to button 1.

Final important comment: THIS ONLY WORKED WITH THE DVD PLAYER SET TO REMOTE SETTING 1 - if it's set to 2 or 3, change it in the Options menu first, then change it back if you need to.

I have a European GX3, which I hacked region free using a Palm V, OmniRemote from http://www.pacificneotek.com/ and sony_dvd_hack.pdb from http://dev0_2000.tripod.com/.

The 1-5 codes needs to be replaced with the following (found somewhere in this forum):

Use the advanced->databases [export category] to export the data to memopad. Sync you Palm and paste the data into memo pad form.

Resync your Palm and then start OmniRemote. Use advanced->databases [import category] and import the updated config.

The GX3 will need to be set to ID 1, not 3 (default).

With the DVD player in standby. Press button 1 -> 5 twice in turn e.g. 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5. The GX3 then gives a beep, and I then turned the GX3 off completely by removing the mains supply.

After turning it back on I could play region 1 DVDs. I have not tried RCE DVDs yet.

I can confirm the http://www.selen.org/sonydvd.html method unlocks region 2 Sony RDR-GX3.

I actually recorded the 1,2,3,4,5 key output from winsamp on my universal remote in "learn mode" rather than using winsamp directly.

I used the sequence 1-1-2-2-3-3-4-4-5-5 with GX3 in standby mode - it powered up (but no "success" message as expected) and loaded my R1 disc without any errors :-)

Remember to put the GX3 in command mode 1 (not 2 or 3) or the recorder will *not* respond to the IR codes.

I can confirm that the instructions given at http://www.selen.org/sonydvd.html give a successful region unlock from Region 2 to multi-region for the Sony RDR-GX3.

I used a laptop with an IR port and a bootable CD. The exact method I used is as follows:

1. Download the winsamp package from Blank Frank's site.

2. Extract the package onto a bootable DOS floppy disk. The disk can be created using the Format facility in Windows XP.

3. Download the IR code file (remote.txt) given in the URL above and copy it to the bootable disk.

4. Create a bootable CD, using the bootable floppy disk as a source to create an image. How this is achieved will depend on your own CD writing software. I used Sonic.

5. Boot up your PC from the CD.

6. When the command prompt appears, run winsamp.exe. By default it selects COM2 as the default binding for the IR port. This may be different on your PC. A good way to check is to see how the IR port has been configured in the BIOS. To double check, you can issue the command MODE COMn where n (usually 1-4) is the port number. If you get an error, it means there is no hardware bound to that port! To override the default, for example to use COM1 execute winsamp C1.

7. Press the 'r' key to load up the codes into winsamp. You should see the 5 command sequences appear in the editor.

8. IMPORTANT. Apart from the Sony RDR-GX3, make sure that any other IR-controlled devices in the vicinity are powered off (not in standby) - you don't want to send these commands to any other device because if you do it may result in unforeseen and irreversible consequences!

9. Place the Sony RDR-GX3 in standby mode. Make sure there is no disc loaded. Ensure the GX3 in is Command Mode 1 (not 2 or 3) or the recorder will *not* respond to the IR codes.
Position your laptop to be within range of the unit (<=2m is best) with the PC's IR port pointing towards the GX3.

10. Run the IR codes twice from 1 to 5 by pressing Enter on each corresponding button. The sequence is as follows:

1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5

11. The GX3 will come out of standby into the powered up state.

12. Immediately repeat the sequence:

1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5

13. The Sony RDR-GX3 will emit an audible beep for ~3 seconds and it will then return to the standby mode. Note: no message will appear on the unit - this is normal.

Your player is now multi-region. Test the procedure has been successful by inserting a non-Region 2 DVD. It should play without any issues.
