I been using the DV500+ with Win2K and I had some problems with the Matrox 450 DH and capturing analog video ( I can't get sound and i can get more than 6 minutes). Now i install XP with Dv500+ drivers v3.0B and everything works perfectly.

Very good card ! It's my first capture card and I was realy impressed by results. No problem for installation. I use a PIII/800 (Asus CUV4X mother board) with 512MO, and a dedicated 40GO disk (Maxtor Diamond max 7200) for audio/video capture. I can't make capture from Premiere 6 with FireWire input (even after reading faq and forum), but no problem with analog inputs. So, I capture DV from DVTool, witch works fine. Premier 6 is very stable, no audio/video sync problem. My first use of this card is make littles movies projetcts from a digital8 camcorder (using DV port), that I export to MPEG2 / 6MBits DVD format, for record on a CD-R (with Nero) that can be read on my standalone DVD player (in fact, my player - a CGV model - can read the file but only if I record it on a CD-RW, video freeze when recorded on a CD-R). I also convert short movies I have on VCR tapes (length less than 1 hour) to VCD format (MPEG1) with TMPeg and that I can read with standard CD-R (always on my standalone DVD player). To my regret, I can't make capture directly in low resolution (352*288) for my VCDs, using fixed 720*576 resolution take space on HD and a lot of time to make conversion. I actually consider to buy a second card for low resolution capture. To summarize, a very good card associated to a very good premier 6 software, for high quality editing, but not adapted for low res. projects. Not a fault !

Great card for everything except creating DVDs. There is a bug in the MPEG2 export feature when trying to export DVD-compliant MPEG2. It creates a MPEG2 with a bit-rate spike in the last 30 seconds of the movie. That bit-rate spike causes most DVD authoring/burning software (like Sonic's DVDit/MyDVD) to reject the video. Pinnacle tech support says they are working on a patch but have no time estimate. If you want to create DVD compliant MPEG2 don't buy this card until the patch is out. The DV500+ makes a great MPEG2 file that can be played in windows media player, just not burnt to DVD and played in your home theater DVD player.

I've been usin the DV500 for a while now and recently upgraded to the plus version. The best way to use this card is to use it in win2000 since you can use it on ntfs which means its got no cap limits (2gb+ possible this way). The features are awesome and you can make a killer endresult with it when working towards vcd/svcd/mpg2. for a look at my setup look at http://this.tj.site.is.free.fr/setup/tjsetupnew.htm and for a look on my end products look at www.telejunkievideos.com I make musicvideos with the card so I have a bit of overkill since the card can do WAY more like widescreen stuff etc. Best way to see what the card is cappable of is checkin out one of my musicvideo remixes I made. sometimes they are online at http://musicvideos.baj.as when i recently made one they are online there a few days to a week. you got a few bucks to spend and want a superb card ??? get this card for damn sure.

I love my DV500. When I initially got it I did have some problems with installation. I upgraded to the DV500+ (same card, better software) and the problems were solved. I use my card under Win2000 which allows greater than 2GB files. This is a huge plus and I would suggest using this OS to get around the significant file limitations of Win98 or WinME. The card ships with Premier 6.0, the full version. It would appear that Premier and the DV 500 work together well. I had used Video Studio with another capture product in the past so I was taken aback when I first saw all of the options with Premier. With a little effort I discovered the Premier is very easy to use and TREMENDOUSLY more powerful. It is amazing what you can do with this software. Pinnacle also gives you software to automatically log and record your DV video (it works!) as well as MPEG2 authoring software for self playing DVD-CD’s and regular DVD’s. I have not been able to get this software to work. The DV 500 offers several advantages over cheaper cards. First it has both input and output of firewire, SVHS and composite. This allows me to take some of my old Hi8 stuff, digitalize it and then edit it without generational loss. I can then output to whatever I like, tape, CD even to DV. It is also “real time” for many functions. I can add a title or transition or even color correction in real time without having to render. Certain functions like 3D transitions still require rendering but you can render only the work area, so a single 3D transition only takes seconds. Add to this Premiers sophisticated sound editing and you have a pretty cool set up. The card is native DV so there is no transcoding problems and DV in=DV out. There is also an onboard MPEG2 hardware transcoder if you want to make DVD-CD’s or regular DVD’s. I’m currently using a HP PIII 866 with a SCSI Video RAID for my video drive. Absolutely no complaints here. Cheaper cards offer less features or junky software. More expensive cards may offer fancy stuff like real time 3D transitions or inputs for Betacam, but for $700 the DV 500 offers professional level quality and features at a consumer price point. Highly recommended.

This card, while expensive does an incredible job of bridging the gap between the hobbyist and the professional realms. It includes some of the best features I have seen in a video capture card with the latest in DV technology for the prosumer. I have captured 2+ hours to an NTFS 60gig hard drive without a single dropped frame, with incredible picture quality from a standard sony vhs. The stock capture format is 720x480 (ntsc, pal values differ accordingly), with audio at 48000, 44100, or 32000. It comes bundled with Adobe Premiere 6.0, and although the drivers have their faults, it is still incredibly stable. Setting up the card has given a few people problems with certain motherboards, so I would advise checking the pinnacle forums, (which are quite good), for any comments regarding your particular mobo. Since having bought the card a month ago, I have upgraded my system to a dual pIII 800mhz NT4.0 workstation, the whole setup flies incomparison to my old (!) 800mhz athlon. If you do purchase the DV500, be sure to get it from a local source, while the online/mail order companies can shave off a few bucks, the ability to locally get help is immense. My main caveat of this card is mostly issues with premiere. It seems slower than 5.1c, as though it was a product shipped ahead of its time. Adobe being what it is though, the issue should be resolved with a patch before long. Good luck! (Date:4/18/01)

Pinnacle doesn't seem to be able to produce stable drivers. Eventually one gets the thing working, though. When it does it really swings and probably should be rated 8 or more. The 6 is also for the worlds worst support organization.
This card is not for people who hate looking under the 'WIndows hood'.
